It’s 2023 now, and I’ve just found this delightful video of a very agile playful Olive in her much younger years. My heart is full seeing her this way. Just loved this. “ pre Mabel” 🥰 I just watched the video of Olives last climb ,with much sadness. She’s an amazing companion full of heart.
Beautiful video. It's so lovely to see a young Olive enjoying herself in the snow and she doesn't have to worry about Mabel ambushing her!!😂 Olive is a sweetheart. ❤❤❤❤❤
I don't know how I missed seeing this glorious video before - I've been glued to the others. A dog enjoying that perfect untouched snow so much - Olive was in Heaven. The pandemic seems to be over now in Britain but I do hope you'll still be able to let us see Olive and Mabel occasionally - you're all so loved.
Wow Andrew, you've been so blessed and fortunate to have such wonderful creatures in your life - thank you for including us fellow passengers on spaceship earth.
Particularly during this time of the quarantine, the stunning stark beauty of this land and the simplicity of taking a dog for a walk in such a place is overwhelming. We will return.
Me Too. I was reading on the patio in the lovely sunshine and when I reached this part I had to get my ipad to look at this wonderful video. Her joy in the snow is lovely to see.
Came because of the mention in your book. LOVED seeing Olive's first experience with snow. Our lab Treble does NOT like the snow; however, I think this is due to his past. When we rescued him at 4 1/2 years old, the majority of his life he had been left in a closet with no window :(. We've had him five years now and he is the sweetest, happiest, craziest almost 10 year old puppy you've ever met. No one believes his age, even with the gray in his muzzle now. He was terrified of rain and snow when we brought him home. He is no longer afraid, but still only likes weather in the mid 70's and partly sunny with a light breeze. He adores his walks, but does not like any form of weather. I keep telling him he must have planned on being incarnated in San Diego, CA, not in New York ;). Treble wants me to let you know he still is hoping to meet Olive one day and convince her he is the man she's been waiting for. Not for breeding, but for snuggles. He's a total snuggle bug. Just realized Olive is wearing the same sweater as Treble does in the cold. Wish I could attach a picture for you.
Three things: first of all thank you very much for this video, it couldn't have come at a better time for this recently divorced bachelor dealing with the pandemic largely alone - I was nearly brought to tears remembering both my labs I had when still married whose lives were both cut short too soon, one we had to put down at seven months from a heart defect and my best buddy who died two weeks shy of his fifth birthday. Your scenes of walking Olive from the perspective of holding the leash really took me back to my wonderful memories of my short time with both my boys. I WILL someday own another Lab when I'm able to own my own home and he will have a proper yard - no vistas like that here in Southern Wisconsin. Second I'd like to say your country is gorgeous, maybe not to everyone's liking but it is too me - just stunning. I remember watching the James Bond movie Skyfall for the first time and when he goes home to Skyfall again the scenery blew me away, I sometimes feel like I've been to certain places I've seen pictures of but have never been to before physically - I can't explain it other than to jokingly say it was in another life. I definitely feel like I've been to Scotland before and would certainly love to be able to go in this lifetime! Lastly I must say to all the dog lovers out there if you haven't already read the book Merle's door" by Ted Kerasote PLEASE do! You will thank me later, I mean we're all having a little extra time on our hands these days - right?! Be well everyone, God bless
Merle’s Door is indeed a wonderful read. Our dogs bring another dimension of love to our lives. They help us to realize our true humanity, and to connect us deeply to the natural world. I surely hope you find another canine companion soon!
@@marydonohoe8200 thank you so much for the kind, and oh so true words, I will for sure be getting another Lab when the time is right - hopefully sooner rather than later! My daughter made an art project in school for me a few years back, one of my prized possessions, and it's a saying on a piece of wood with an outline of a Lab and the saying is " A dog is the only thing that loves You more than he loves himself" needless to say I love it and I believe that sums up our relationship with dogs. Take care and be well in this craziest of times, God bless 🙂✌
@Marc Peters Sorry for the loss of your dogs. I agree that the landscape in this vid= beautiful. A friend once told me that we don’t “own” dogs, as in I’m their “owner” rather I’m their “caretaker”. That shift in thinking helped us. It will be cool when you can again share your life with another dog... all of those outings, belly rubs, nap times. Take care.... from Chicago
@@cUser691 thanks for the kind words and you're absolutely right about dogs, we do not own them, we quite simply are blessed to share time with them on this planet for however long that may be. I appreciate your hope for me to have another four legged friend to share all the extra special things you describe, one of those types of things I'll remember and cherish was my fox red Lab and best buddy Koda laying across me in bed sometimes, not always the most comfortable with him weighing 100 lbs but just the best ;) May God bless you and yours and keep you safe in this crazy year 🙂✌
I was set to be disappointed by the lack of narrative but Olive came through with some amazing twirls followed by some important snow fetching on a mountain covered with snow a complete lack of hunting drive while encountering wildlife and finally a twig in her mouth as if to say I may not be able to feed my family but hey look at this almost stick ... (love your narrations! that's the point :))
Just the other day Olive's last climb was on my feed. Admittedly, I was very hesitant to watch. I was afraid of the unthinkable. Thankfully I watched it anyway. Still bitter sweet. Happy to be watching her 1st! This is an Olive I've not seen yet! So silly.
This is glorious!! Thank you Andrew gives so much hope that the mess we are in will pass. Olive I love you!! You are a good dog, in fact the best of dogs!! The snow and the whirling, whistling wind......a day of endless charm and fun......and deer!!! And now a stick! What a momentous!! Bet you slept well that night!
Came to this video after it was mentioned in your book and it lived up to the hype. I loved Olive meeting snow for the first time and then triumphantly carrying her stick at the end. I've never had labs but one of our dogs always loved finding a stick to carry. Thanks for sharing,
Reading Olive, Mabel and Me, and I've just come to the first climb with Olive. Having brought a California Labrador to Indiana, yes the snow thing is fantastic!
I just read the chapter in your book about this & then came here to find the video. Joyous! And, I love that she took a souvenir stick with her at the end!
Absolutely brilliant and utterly beautiful. Amazing compared to the hot, dry flatness here in Australia. Both, of course, having their own beauty. But Olive is the gorgeous black Lab that is a heart stealer! Gorgeous video, thank you.
I agree absolutely beautiful. very jealous. It's true, Australia is the oldest, flattest, and driest inhabited continent, but don't forget that Australia also has the Great Dividing Range ... stretching 3,500 kilometres, running the entire length of the eastern coastline fading out at the GRAMPIANS in western Victoria. Highest point being Mount Kosciuszko at the south eastern end at 2,228 metres high. Ben Nevis, 1,345 meters high, lies at the western end of the GRAMPIAN Mountains in the Scottish Highlands. Not trying to be a smart ass, just wanted to add some perspective, and link the name GRAMPIAN, which has an interesting etymology.
I went hunting for this after listening to you describe it in the book. Exactly as charming as described! You are the Scottish, dog-loving, mountain-climbing Bill Bryson. Please, please keep writing!!
Holy smoke. That place looks downright ominous and intimidating. I was trying to figure out where it was without looking it up, and couldn't do it. All that wind, it might have been the Himalayas for all I could tell. Olive appears to be awed, and at the same time respectful of her surroundings. One lucky dog to be going on these excursions. I bet any time you go outside now, she gets all excited and wants to go with. Looks like she's in her element here. Anyway, I did look it up, and for some reason, Scotland does not come to mind when I think of places like this, so I learned something. Those last scenes were beautiful. I'm sitting here in Bismarck, North Dakota, with hardly a hill to be seen. :)
Love this video, such a beautiful spot and Olive is amazing. I really like how responsible Andrew is with his dog here, if she even thinks about going near the edge he calls her.
Just reading the book Andrew and got to this part. I had a black lab for 15 years. This video brings back happy memories but tinged with sadness that's she's no longer with me.......... Regards, Phil.
This came across my feed for the first time. Glorious! Olive’s legs seem longer as her waist is much smaller. Still a young girl here. What a lovely memory for you. I love watching the videos of my Zoe, chocolate Labrador, fills me with joy. Be in the moment with them, but the videos are precious.
Aww, baby Olive! The wonderful thing about Labs is that they have just as much fun with a stick as they do with world-class scenery! My dog Jack loved the stuffed dinosaur he found in a pile marked 'FREE' at the side of the road. He picked it out himself. Jack loved doing anything, as long as he was with me ❤ (and Dino too)
Gorgeous and delightful. (The hills, too.) But oh, what wind you had! Just reached this point in your wonderful book and loved seeing this video paired with the narrative. Thank you for both.
This is so funny & totally typical Labrador - brilliant! The same as previous comments I'm reading your excellent book & have got to this page & had to look up Olive discovering snow. You described it perfectly 🥰
You videos have been entertaining since day one but your book has had me in stitches. Tears in my eyes with laughter as my own 12 year old beagle (yes I'm one of those owners clamped to my escape-artist hound) looks at me as if to say, "Keep it down". Bravo on keeping me entertained online and in lines! Cheers from Nova Scotia, Canada! Natalie & Sullivan the Beagle
Happy New Year. I’ve enjoyed my time with the three of you this past year. Thanks for sharing your adventures and terrific sense of humour. Best to you and your family for 2022.
Recently finished reading the wonderful book. This video is a great companion to Andrew's depiction of Scotland mountains, which are vastly different from my Pacific NW USA mountains.
I’m lucky to live in a place very similar to yours. Luke, Brodie and I live in Alaska. Luke has a personality like your girls, as he is a golden retriever. Brodie can not figure out fetch games, as he is a Bernese Mountain Dog. But boy does he do well in snowy cold conditions! We love your videos.
This is delightful. I just found your videos today and am enchanted. I too have a black and a yellow lab from the UK but live in the US. I also have a tiny yorkie. We commentate their moods and actions but nothing like your wonderful videos. Thank you.
What a precious find a patch of snow is! We had an enormous amount of it one winter, and when it started to melt, only the bank the wind had created by blowing a ton against the ditch remained. Meanwhile our Red Setter Nicky had decided on toileting on snow but now the resources were disappearing in jig time! It was an interesting transition back to 'ordinary times'... 🤨
If you’d put Olive’s name in the title, you’d go to 2 million views in a few days. And it wouldn’t be fibbing. “Young Olive Bests the Stob a’Choire Odhair”. Quite a nice show by the young pup!
Just reached this point in the book which is such light relief from the pandemic. Scotland looks incredible, really need to make it a priority to visit.
Nah. I think it stands as it is and was (after all it was posted up six years ago before the Mabel and Olive commentaries arrived on the scene.) The beauty, sense of place, and silence but for the wind, and occasional calling to heel are sufficient to give the right atmosphere to the piece . This is real, rather than jokey. :-)
Like others, I looked for this video as a result of reading the Olive/Mabel/Andrew book, and it was lovely to see Olive so excited at her first experience of snow 😊. My first dog also loved the snow, but sadly it was long before mobile 'phones with cameras, and so I have no videos of his pure joy at playing in the snow - other than in my memory. Living in Southern England at the time, snow was pretty rare - but I can still remember his initial (first experience) confusion at the changed environment, followed by riotous fun! He never understood why the snowballs I threw for him disappeared, when he 'grabbed' them in his mouth 😂.
Hi Andrew. Reading your book( bought, being enjoyed) and realistic about the likelihood of you reading comments on old videos ! Available on TH-cam is a model railway set in Scotland created over the last 40 years by a very talented Dutchman, Ted Polet. The Craigcorrie and Dunalistair. Lots of very beautiful cameo scenes which embody the landscape in this video. You might enjoy it Happy new year
Worth a break from your fine book to look this one up. First time in the snow was just as you described. What a wonderful memory to have on video! I wonder if Olive and Mabel take as long to dry out as a yellow Lab we used to know and dog sit. We always described his coat as being akin to a polar bear's. Once wet, it would take hours to fully dry.
Chasing snowballs and wondering what happened to them🤣, flapping her ears are so cute. The lovely silhouette of her are are so beautiful. Weather is a bit gloomy but beautiful in its own way. She certainly loves snow. Might be a stupid question but I’m from Florida so I have no idea, is that in Scotland?
Olive is awesome she is just like our girl Charley, right down to the energy, face, lean athletic build and blue collar. Olive girl is not your typical "English lab" very fit and long lasting energy, did you by chance get her from America?
There are 2 types of Lab here in the UK. The Show Labrador , chunkier, heavier and not as big and the Gun Dog Lab, Athletic, loving, slimmer and bigger. I much prefer the Gundog type.
If you give your dog the best life, there is no reason to be sad. Be content knowing you gave your dog the best.
Beautiful video. It's so lovely to see a young Olive enjoying herself in the snow and she doesn't have to worry about Mabel ambushing her!!😂 Olive is a sweetheart. ❤❤❤❤❤
When I watch this, and the video of Olive’s last trip to the hills, I see a wonderful life well led.
Seeing young Olive being young Olive is so sweet. What a beautiful life! ❤
Wow Andrew, you've been so blessed and fortunate to have such wonderful creatures in your life - thank you for including us fellow passengers on spaceship earth.
Nice to see a younger Olive training for the Winter Olympics.
Wow landscape!
Particularly during this time of the quarantine, the stunning stark beauty of this land and the simplicity of taking a dog for a walk in such a place is overwhelming. We will return.
I’m reading Olive, Mabel & Me and have reached the point of Olive’s first climb. It has been lovely to watch this alongside reading the book.
Me too 😃

I’m here because of the book and for the ear flappage
Dear Helen, bit late from your reply but do think "ear flappage" should find itself in The Oxford Dictionary
The audiobook just made me through an epic drive, also mostly here for the ear flappage and the possibility of biscuits.
Mind the cornice.
😂
The ear flappage and the pouncing. Oh, the backgrounds not bad either..❤
Nothing better than an Adventure with your Best Friend 🙏🐕

Aw Olive, The Snow Master General, skittering around in the snow dregs…I’m glad I waited 9 years to see this, sweet, wonderful dog😊

Olive's paw prints 🐾🐾 should be properly immortalized there!! 😍
Just coming into our winter, here in Aus; and that looks just amazing. What a heavenly walk!!
I’ve just read the bit in your book referencing this video....so now I’m here watching it...thank you x
Watching this during the quarantine
💖
I was just thinking the same thing...
me too
I just finished reading of this walk in your book and had to come and watch it. By the way, non dog owners read your books too!
Stunningly beautiful ~ and what a gorgeous dog!
Love her reaction to snow! Thanks for tipping me off to the video in the book!
Best companion in this world
Bleak and very cold looking. Poor Olives cold paws. Andrew you must be super fit to manage those hikes up in the wilds of Scotland
This is delightful. I just found your videos today and am enchanted. I too have a black and a yellow lab from the UK but live in the US. I also have a tiny yorkie. We commentate their moods and actions but nothing like your wonderful videos. Thank you.
I love your funny videos but the camping in the wild with your dogs is just impressive and amazing
WOW. The expanse. Doggie heaven for Olive-Free to run and experience nature with her best friend!
No wonder my grandmother's family left Scotland; it's cold!
Olive was so young, full of energy, and sticks.
Her boundless energy! I’m so happy to see her at that age!
She can't contain her happiness just full on joyousness

How utterly beautiful. Thank you for bringing these visages 😃
me too, what a lovely holiday read.. Olive looks good in her cold weather gear ❤️
Olive zoomies, Olive ready to face life head on - glorious! ❤
@1:38 priceless frame 🐾🐾
Mable must be delighted to have you all to herself. And I love the sweater she's wearing.
Just reached this point in the book which is such light relief from the pandemic. Scotland looks incredible, really need to make it a priority to visit.
You take GREAT pictures!! Thank you.
Great fun to see sweet Olive when she was younger and full of beans!
Absolutely beautiful scenery!! Great shots!!👌🏻😃
❤🐶😉😄😊 looks like Olive enjoyed herself, and watching deer 😉😄😊 thanks Andrew and Stay Safer today 😨☺😊
Looks like I'm the only one who was a nervous wreck watching this. Love you guys but was so afraid something was going to happen.❤
You DEFINITELY should do this video with commentary!!! Priceless!
What a beautiful piece of the world you live in.
Just got up to this part in your book. This video doesn’t disappoint ❤️
Like others, I looked for this video as a result of reading the Olive/Mabel/Andrew book, and it was lovely to see Olive so excited at her first experience of snow 😊.

A human could not have a better hiking buddy.
Ah... back when she was little more than a cocktail Olive. So gorgeous!
Yep, I’m here because I am reading your book , love the obligatory stick/twig!
Oh my Godess, I love snow and mountains!!! ❤ X x
You might enjoy it
Happy new year
Worth a break from your fine book to look this one up. First time in the snow was just as you described. What a wonderful memory to have on video! I wonder if Olive and Mabel take as long to dry out as a yellow Lab we used to know and dog sit. We always described his coat as being akin to a polar bear's. Once wet, it would take hours to fully dry.
Mabel certainly takes a while to dry out...
Beautiful, love this!
Awesome! What a great dog.
You cn see she's still a puppy but once you get a close up on that face, you know it's Olive.
@@jlw22356 We have similar nomenclature here in the States, "Bench" or show labs and "field" labs that are better suited as working gun dogs.
After the recent video of the last great climb, looking back on this is just 😢
Awww she was practically a baby then! 😢
Amazing to see that Olive was once as daft as Mabel back in the day.
Great journey.
Did you have any idea that Olive would become a TH-cam star in later life?
Keep well and be safe,

Beautiful. Reading Olive and Mabel which brought me here. Late to the party
Better late than never. Hope you enjoy it.
makes me homesick for Glencoe and Rannoch Moor
Looks similar the black mountains in Wales..
