- Come with us into the Scottish hills for a few minutes of our first good winter expedition this year - which happened to fall on Mabel's birthday. And I knew that the first big mountain day would come where Olive didn't join us, but a) she was happy as could be at home, b) she has done enough of them and c) she's still in grand shape. In fact, we've just been for a jog on the beach. Followed by a pub lunch.

Ok - for everyone asking about dog paws in snow and cold conditions (and believe me, this is asked a LOT), they do not get cold. It has been thoroughly researched. All due to a clever blood heating / transfer system which they have. Dogs use the warmer blood from the heart to heat up the colder blood down at the paws, before returning it to the heart. This is one of the many reasons why you don't see wolves in Siberian winters asking for plastic boots. Similarly with coats - on a healthy adult Labrador, with their very efficient two layers of fur, I only put the extra coat on them when it gets properly cold.
I know we can humanise our dogs, but it often helps to stop and realise that they work in very different ways.
It depends on the breed of dog too. Labradors, Newfoundlands, St Bernards etc are bred and adapted for cold climates. Greyhounds, not so much. Mabel looked very happy and not in the least cold, but some breeds of dog couldn't take those conditions.

I had tears too. Just remembering my own dogs. Those looks of love. And also remembering when one one or more dogs could no longer go on our hikes. Although, I think Andrew is wrong when he mentioned to Mabel that she didn't remember their big walk. I think the dogs DO remember.

Olive has earned her couch time. Though I'm sure she would have happily done her level best to complete the trip by your side, thank you for recognizing what was best for her while still giving Mabel her adventure. Great video sir and a beautiful family you have there.

It feels strange just having my 10-year-old and his 4-year-old Daughter plus an 8-year-old Yorkie here but reinforcements are on standby as Monday sees the return of the Mother and another Litter Daughter who live in my road on the edge of London and look after on weekdays from Monday to Friday:) Then I take all 5 out to the park or woods to be free and enjoy their adventures together💛

I had the same reaction. I think it was because Olive wasn't there and it brought home the reality that she's grown too old for these more strenuous adventures. Although she's earned her snooze at home, it's difficult not to see all three of them enjoying the amazing vistas.

So true 'You don't remember the big walk, do you? I do.' Dogs are just 'in the moment'. But they do know if their owner makes them feel secure, like you do.
As soon as I saw the words 'Mabel' and 'solo', I felt sick. So glad that lovely Olive is okay! Her little snuffley sleeping noises are precious! ❤🐕
Ok, seeing you trek up the mountains with pup, brought me to tears. It was a scene I saw my son Sgt first Class Matthew Randy Nyman do for so many years. He was a member of the Deltas Green Berets and started Seven Soldiers to the Seven Summits. And started a non profit to help injured war vets continue doing physical activities outdoors after their injuries. He was killed 3 years ago on a climb to Mt Denali. His entire crew was killed. It was one of the deadliest avalanches in American history. I should mention that he would climb with the use of NO LEGS. He lost a leg in the war, and the other leg became paralyzed. It happened during a rescue mission to save someone. The helicopter came down on him the blade took off the leg. As well as traumatic brain injury. I basically moved in with him off and on for a few years to help out taking him to appointments being supportive where I could. His “good leg ended up being his amputated leg. He would swing out his hip with his paralyzed leg, then With his prosthetic leg step down to take a step. While climbing he used mostly upper body movements. He became quite well known, and often told me he saw himself dying on a mountain. So I couldn’t cry for him at news of his death. I cried for me not having his joy around. You have his adventurous spirit. CLIMB ON, BE SAFE, KEEP LUVING THOSE PUPS

I remember Andrew saying on one of their last hikes that Olive probably wouldn't be doing it again, as she was getting too old for mountains.

I was in tears through this entire video, Andrew. I wasn’t worried something dire had happened to Olive. The wide expansive views, and saying essentially to Mabel “you’ve been by my side for 8 hours now…what’s that about” I immediately thought, she’s missing her beloved trekking partner and then you alluded to this very idea in your thoughtful quiet voice. Every aspect moved me. Thank you 💖

I no longer have a dog, since I live in an apartment, but James was a total mix who still lived with Dad until he was put down due to old age. I think James was approaching the age of 11. My dogs are what I see on TH-cam.
