Thanks for taking the time to put together a very informative video for people thinking about getting the Ring Doorbell. They are fairly easy to install. I’ve had mine for six months and can’t imagine not having one now. I’ve been at Disneyland and talked to someone at my door 50 miles away. I love this technology.
I have the original ring now for a year. It was hard wired to the house and worked great. Now, there must have been an upgrade, as it's no longer wired to the house and the inside chime stopped working. I called my ADT carrier and they now use ring and are coming to upgrade me to ring 2. One question what does the Wi-Fi extender do? Since we switched from xfinity to att man do I regret that! Thanks great video.
I was looking at this today at costco and do you know it said on the box that ring will replace your device if it is stolen from your door! that's pretty cool. I live in a townhouse that is simular to an apartment community
There's got to be a way to record the video without paying the subscription maybe press record on your phone when it starts happening someone will think of it
Thanks for the excellent review. In regards to the latency, it's not always the fault of the Ring devices. Every time I had noticed any latency was when my wifi network was having issues. Once I had sorted out the wifi issues, Ring worked flawlessly. I have also found that if the power drops out, then any activation would work from the device, but I wouldn't get notifications from my mobile phone. My ISP can be unreliable at times, especially since we had upgraded from ADSL to NBN. I often have internet connection issues, which will stop phone notifications, but the devices within my wifi zone, will continue to work flawlessly. My only device issues are with the Ring Floodlight Cam. It often goes off for no reason, possibly because with a breeze, the rose bushes move. Supposedly the infra red sensors don't pick up on plants, but there's no other explanation that I can come up with. A feature that the Video Doorbell has, which is an excellent option, is the smart option, which basically pauses the detection for about half an hour when it detects something similar. That's excellent, especially when one of us is in and out. The Floodlight Cam doesn't have this feature, and it gets very annoying when it constantly goes off every time one of us comes into range.
Steven Donnison hello, I wifi issue too.. but my internet service is in excellent range.. the doorbell just won’t connect to the ring doorbell.. I’ve tired everything.. how’d you solve your issue
Just ordered a ring 2 yesterday and I want to install with tape first just to make sure it will work well. Plus we have aluminum siding so I’m thinking it won’t work well there. Glad I found your video!! Thanks!
Yes and no. It’ll record sound automatically if motion or doorbell activated. But you need to press a button to speak. If you use the LIVE view, just to peak outside and see what’s going on, you get two buttons. One for speaking and one for listening.
Thank u it is easier than what I thought especially about the 2 sided sticky tape my husband does not like to drill anything into the outside walls so thanks about that tape also I thought I had to connect it to my doorbell so it is nice that I don’t have to do that, all I have to use is the plug-in chime. So thanks again
You need a ring chime Pro... it extends your Wi-Fi directly to the doorbells and the doorbells only... ring just sent me one recently and it works awesome but I do need a Wi-Fi booster for my home because I have really crappy Wi-Fi and I'm sure the ring Pro will work even better when I boost the signal up.
Hi, can i ask you, if i wired my ring device to an existing chime, would the issue go away in regards of 5 sec delay with the wireless chime? I want to make sure that when someone does press the bell, even if the video dont work, i can still use it as a normal bell without any delays! At the moment i have a chime, which is wired to a normal standard bell.
Good review, I just installed my Ring doorbell today. Had problems attaching the base to my external stucco wall as it was not flat. Ended up using the red industrial double stick similar to what you showed in the video. I have noticed video latency issues after the device detects motion or somebody pushes the doorbell but I believe mine might be due to my slow DSL connectivity. (7mb down/600kb up) I am also considering moving the wifi/router closer to the doorbell as well. The interior construction of the old stucco wall may be hindering the wifi signal and since I don't have a way to measure signal gain/loss unless I can find a iOS or android app.
Great video and well presented, kept me interested... got my ring door bell and chime as hubby works nights so both of us have piece of mind and when I'm working late he can see me coming home....now that's got to be worth it
I just have to say the outdoor double sided tape was clutch! I went to drill the holes and there was metal behind the stucco. Fortunately I had watched your vid right before I went to do it so I didn't even stress or waste time... Ran to Lowe's and boom My doorbell is up and feels pretty solid. (supposedly rated at 30 lbs, but if someone is putting that much shear force on my doorbell they are trying to break it...)
i was just gonna ask some in there comment section if the ring chime works on the normal ring door bell then i see your vid to the right and at the click of the button hear i am right time to watch it now thanks for sharing dude
This video answered every and all questions and concerns about this product that I had. Awesome video, will be purchasing my ring for sure after seeing this review.
Thanks for the Great review. I wish other reviewers would look at this video and see how it is done right1 Great job! I'll be buying both the Ring and the Chime. If I had hair, I would wear it like yours too! :)
Great review but... you can put it on metal you don't need double sided tape I have it on my front door and it doesn't move or have any WiFi problems it's a great device and review video
Michael Levine how did you barrack it without using the tape? Did you put screws into your metal door. My door is also metal....I would like to know! Also, do you have the chime. TYIA
I just watched this vid, and I agree with the comments this was very clear, and informative. Thank you. But....there are a few questions people have asked and I have some of the same, but you are not answering ?
K Graham I had the same problem. I fixed it by taking the battery out and starting the setup again. Also sometimes when the internet connection is weak the sound doesn’t work at times.
Your review is very clear and concise. You gave me confidence to keep mine. Thank you! Question.... can I have more than one chime connected to the Ring? What's the difference between Ring and Ring Pro? Do you ever use motion scheduling?
All those extras you mentioned such as widening the sensor view... I can’t seem to locate these extras in the Ring App. Is it only accessible through my Hubbby’s log in???
Very informative review, pluses and minuses identified and discussed. I appreciate your effort in making this video, I've been considering installing one of these to start a more thorough home security effort. A question: are other cameras available for remote observation of separate rooms or other entrances to your home?
I just bought the ring stick up cam bundle which has two cameras and solar power units. Great price. Using for other outside areas. I have Frontpoint for entrance security.
I have an odd (perhaps) 🤔 question?! My neighbor just installed one & our townhomes are quite close to each other, so can they hear our conversations on a regular now? Like when we're on our pathway, driveway, or garage? In other words, how strong is the audio "pickup"? Besides their motion detection picking up OUR every move now, do they get to hear OUR personal conversations now too? 🙄
I haven't seen any people ask this, you said that other people can get notified too. Does that mean they can also answer the doorbell? If so, what happens if multiple people try to answer at the same time? I only ask this because if someone were to have a family of 5 or so and wanted everyone to have a way to answer if someone else is busy.
I bought a Ring Doorbell Pro for my parents for christmas. My dad ended up hard wiring the first one and never saw the light come up around the button. Please keep in mind that he is an electrician and did everything correcting. Checking things multiple times before he took it off and handed it back to me to return, saying it was defective. Took it back, got a new one, same thing happened. This time he called customer service and they gave him advice that was useless to him because he had already done everything they recommended. Do you think it has anything to do with the wifi? I hate for him to try to set another one up if it is going to do the same thing again, but my mom really wants one. Any advice would be wonderful!
I'm a newbie when it comes to this whole video doorbell stuff. However, the technician installed my Ring Video doorbell 3 but did not connect it to the existing (working) doorbell. He just put it on the exterior brick wall. When anybody comes to my door they continue to press my old doorbell. Will I still be able to get a picture of them on my phone and talk with them?
Good Video. my ring is place on my aluminum siding. Do you think I need to do the double sided tape. Because I notice that video don't come on instantly it take a few minutes. I do have good wifi around the house because I have several cameras. Also I use to have the DoorBell Fon DP-28IT Door Answering and I want to used the wire installation from that with a plug in transformer. have you tired that yet.
Thanks for the video. Not sure if I understood correctly, but if I hard wire the ring video doorbell to my existing doorbell, does that mean my doorbell inside my house will go off as well? This is the outcome in hoping for but I'm not sure. Thanks in advance.
Thanks so much for this comprehensive review. $199 is a lot of money (in my current situation) so I wanted to be sure it was going to work as promised. I also live in a rental so the double stick tape idea is a great option. I'm going outside to check my wifi strength now- it was a big concern for getting this to work and I never thought of the obvious checking it with my phone. Thanks again for the helpful info.
+cybersoil100 you can play around with it before finalizing the install, but you'll need help. You hold the doorbell and someone looks at the live feed via the app (guess u can do it by yourself too). I'm 5'6" and I placed it just by my shoulders sooo.... 5'?
You were the 1st person whoever said test the wi-fi signal OUTSIDE the house to make sure it will pick it up. Never considered that before, so I checked mine......I can get wi-fi several feet from the door....thank you for mentioning that. Also, if you do not have the "chime", and someone rings the doorbell, I know they hear a doorbell tone, but will we hear one on our smart phone, if it is not on silent? If so, is there a variety of tones we can have? You said something that you would hear rings from each device it is set to, but I'm not sure what you meant. If you do get a sound on your device, I would like to see that in action, as other videos only show a picture come up on the phone..........which does not do you any good if the phone is in your pocket.
Hi, can this doorbell be viewed from your phone if nobody is there and no motion was set off? As in, you can just view what is outside of your house at any given time even when nothing is causing it to send you a notification? Also, can you take a still photo of the person at your door if you decided you wanted to? Thanks for your response!
My issue with the door bell is that anyone can ripped it from the front door to steel or break in the house what would happen is that's the case? Would I be able to see what's goin on with out the door bell?
I didn't realise that I wouldn't be able to hear the bell and missed a few callers. So I bought a chime but I get right to the end of installing it then I get a message saying something happened and it hasn't connected. Very frustrating!!!
My doorbell sits on a narrow frame, making me wonder if I'd be able to even install this using the existing wires. Does the back plate have other options that would accommodate this issue? I'd hate to drill into my brick.
Thanks you so much. Really well done video. Like Tomie said below, I wish others would view this for training purposes. Some are so awful, I can't wait to shut them down.
delayed picture when motion sensor activated, first ring doorbell 2 died and had to be replaced under warranty. first ring doorbell has problems with ring tones and probably will need to be replaced. do they make something better and more dependable?
I Have A Question If I Bought A Ring Video Doorbell Will It Work For A Sided House? I Am Really Thinking About Investing In One. Because Of Where I Live At There Are Some Crazy People Who Have Tried To Break In. Thanks
Can you tell me if the Ring Doorbell can be wired to the existing bell/chime inside the home? It would be nice if others in the house can hear if someone rings the door bell other than from my phone or their phone. If not, I guess I'll need to purchase the Ring chime, too. Thank you in advance for your thoughts.
+DL Collier My experience has been mixed. Mine is hardwired to existing bell/chime, and it charges. But, my inside chime only works with a single chime, and it causes my inside chime to hum/buzz until I end the connections or it times out without m ending the video session. I'm waiting for a callback from Support now. With their Chime add on, everyone in the house can here the ring.
My ring video has been up for almost 6 months and all of a sudden my doorbell has stopped working. I had it hardwired to my existing doorbell. any ideas?
We have steel lap siding and a metal door :/ on our second device to try and make it work. Also our lap siding is 4 inch so the ring wont fit in its intended vertical position so we are trying it horizontally...love the tech but my new steel siding and metal door may not be workable now I fear.....
His description of his title: Analyst * used the word Skype to describe the video and Ring camera interface * My description of my job title: Analyst Analyzer
That's a lot of complexity just for answering one's door. Only makes sense if you must answer your door when no one's at home. And in that case, better hope no one rings when you're in a meeting or otherwise unavailable. BTW, will it ring if your phone is in sleep mode?
Do you get the video saved to the cloud ONLY on pressing the doorbell, or do you also get video saved to the cloud from the motion detector.....I have had the unfortunate experience of someone stealing packages off the doorstep, and they DID NOT ring the doorbell 1st.
Hi Tony - thank for the post and review. I really like the product and just now ordered Chime. Do you know how to reset it? I inadvertantly removed Chime from the app and now I can't relink it. Thank you!
Open the app, Add Device, Chime, plug Chime into the wall, connect it to wifi via the app, set what kind of notifications you want and you should be done. If you have other issues, contact Ring. thanks!
Hi again Tony. Thank you for the reply. I ended up contacting Ring as Chime stopped broadcasting its network. Turns out there is a reset button on the right side of the device. What I ended up doing is shutting off my home network, unplugging Chime, pushing the reset button for 5 seconds (using the proprietary key screwdriver), restarting my home network and then plugging Chime again. I then followed the "Add Device" instructions. Fairly simple. Thanks again!
Will the chime work if you hard wired the ring? I wasnt sure if the chime was only to be used if you are running the ring as a wireless system. Mine is hardwired but I want to add a chime in my basement.
3M double sided tape, where to get this thanks. Ring should also provide that too. Does that mean easy to remove and recharge as you need to do this every year???
how could I connect an existing old chime to a new wifi doorbell? (not ring) wondering if there a way I could just solder the 2 wires to the push button inside the wifi doorbell
So, I have bought a "Doorbell 2". There are some bugs. If it detects that it the environment is dark to some degree, when motion causes the camera to activate, or if I enable Live View, it will capture in Grayscale with infrared LEDs. No color video. That's fine. But if say I have the doorbell in my room with the lights on (or if it was installed outside and it was daytime), and the camera activates, it records in COLOR. That's fine. But then as it is capturing in color, then, I place the doorbell in a dark place, by shutting off the lights. PROBLEM - in a completely dark environment in color recording mode (no infrared LEDs on), the video is very stuttery. 1 or 2 frames per second. If i put in just a bit of light, such as I stop blocking the blue rotating LEDS on the doorbell with my hand, then the video is smooth again. I block it out, video is very very choppy. Not sure if that is a computational problem where it is attempting to do math for detection or for video quality. Also, it will not switch from color/day to black and white (LEDs)/night on the fly. The camera has to shut off and then another event happen. Finally, no HD video. Looks like it is about 360p. Internet connection is good with a 50MbPS Comcast connection close to a high end router. Battery in the device is at about 50% and not hard wired yet. So, I HOPE it is just because the battery isn't fully charged & not hard wired.

@ThatGuyThere Do U Setup Your Own Ring Video Doorbell And Chime?
I have the original ring now for a year. It was hard wired to the house and worked great. A wifi booster will do the same thing as the ring chime pro, you shouldn't need both. Having too many can potentially make things worse.

So do you still need any existing doorbell/by pass power kit If you buy the wireless doorbell chime or a chime pro?
Yes you do
ring works great on my metal storm door, you need a decent router (mine is the Asus rt-ac3200) or purchase a ring chime pro WiFi extender.
Odd. I tried the Ring WiFi extender too. No go.
Tony, Great video. I need a wifi repeater for my front door. Any recommendations? John
Thanks you so much. Really well done video. Like Tomie said below, I wish others would view this for training purposes. Some are so awful, I can't wait to shut them down.
Great video. Very informative. Thanks
delayed picture when motion sensor activated, first ring doorbell 2 died and had to be replaced under warranty. first ring doorbell has problems with ring tones and probably will need to be replaced. do they make something better and more dependable?
I Have A Question If I Bought A Ring Video Doorbell Will It Work For A Sided House? I Am Really Thinking About Investing In One. Because Of Where I Live At There Are Some Crazy People Who Have Tried To Break In. Thanks
Ring has adapters for siding
I had it hardwired to my existing doorbell. any ideas?
Is there something I need to do to enable audio?
excellent review!
I'm in the market for THE RING myself and you've definitely answered some of my questions.
Costco has a good price right now, and it comes with a chime also.
my battery only lasted a month, should i return it or replace it?
great review, thanks!
We have steel lap siding and a metal door :/ on our second device to try and make it work. Also our lap siding is 4 inch so the ring wont fit in its intended vertical position so we are trying it horizontally...love the tech but my new steel siding and metal door may not be workable now I fear.....
Just what I wanted to know . I was worried that if all our phones were off like at night then we wouldn’t hear the doorbell . So I bought the chime

Thank you for your answer and have "Happy New Year "
That's a lot of complexity just for answering one's door. Only makes sense if you must answer your door when no one's at home. And in that case, better hope no one rings when you're in a meeting or otherwise unavailable. BTW, will it ring if your phone is in sleep mode?
Awesome video! Great tutorial and review--thanks for posting. About to order my Ring Video and Wi-Fi chime from Amazon.
Do you get the video saved to the cloud ONLY on pressing the doorbell, or do you also get video saved to the cloud from the motion detector.....I have had the unfortunate experience of someone stealing packages off the doorstep, and they DID NOT ring the doorbell 1st.
+Jerry Gibson No the Cloud will ONLY work if there's motion or a button press.
+Tony Hannides hey where I can buy the chime? help please
+Hernandezaztk ring.com/chime
+Jerry Gibson The recording works on both motion as well as actually pressing the doorbell.
Jerry, do you live in Indiana?
Can you have more than one chime on one ring cuz I have upstairs and downstairs?
Yes
Awesome video & review thank you!
I have vinyl siding, what would you use? also, I may have to use that double sided sticky tape so what brand is that?
3M
Thanks for posting this video
Thank you I’m sold now... They better send you a cut
Will the chime work if you hard wired the ring? I wasnt sure if the chime was only to be used if you are running the ring as a wireless system. Mine is hardwired but I want to add a chime in my basement.
R
3M double sided tape, where to get this thanks. Ring should also provide that too. Does that mean easy to remove and recharge as you need to do this every year???
Thanks for the review!
Thanks. I became aware of installing my wifi close to the Ring.
Great review!
how could I connect an existing old chime to a new wifi doorbell? (not ring) wondering if there a way I could just solder the 2 wires to the push button inside the wifi doorbell
do you need to have internet service or can this be hooked to a cell phone?
Can it work with existing door chime inside the house, or do I need to purchase the Chimes?
If you hardwire to your existing doorbell it will work with your existing doorbell chime.
I have a small apartment do I need the chime
Please how can I minimize reflection of sunlight? I don't get a clear view due to too much sunlight. Thank you
Can the ringtone at the bell be disabled so that the button outside doesn't make any noise ?
this was awesome. well done sold thank you
So, I have bought a "Doorbell 2".
I lost the screwdrive, do you know the trox size of screw on bottom so I can buy replacement one and charge mine up. Thank you
+Kirk Atamian not sure. maybe email Ring directly? Or buy a screwdriver from their customer service rep?
+Tony Hannides it was a t6 trox found one on ebay for $1
