I remember watching this race live. The shot at 37:28, you can clearly see Kahne's hands shaking. A young rookie who was doing so well in his first few starts in Cup. At the time I felt bad so bad for him, he was shaking and had a worried look on his face like someone was going to fire him. Like "Kid you're going to do great things in this sport, it will all be okay, calm down". Obviously we know now his career is NOT as promising as it seemed to look like back in his first few years, which is unfortunate
2004 Food City 500 Location: Bristol, Tennessee Track: Bristol Motor Speedway Type of race track: Short Track Starting cars: 43 Finishing cars: 34 Laps: 500 Cautions: 11 Red flags: 1 Pole Winner: Ryan Newman (12) Most laps led: Kurt Busch (97) (119 laps led) Race Winner: Kurt Busch (97)
2:30:13 Rusty had him right there but he didn't go for it, he was setting up for the pass right after that and the stupid caution(s) came out and let Busch cool off his tires and he held on
2:55:40, says he lost his power steering before the end of the race so I don't know if he could've held on if he did pass him, although he did hold 2nd so maybe
I miss that aggressive Kurt. Everybody punished him for it and brought him down. But now Kyle's no different but oh we need that in Nascar and rewarded for brash attitude at pit reporters.
A crowd double the size that watches a Super Bowl.... Now it is like 40,000 people... This past spring race was poorly attended. Weather was rather good for this past spring race. No excuses. This track was killed with the repave after 07... Then economy tanked at the same time... Moron track owner would not drop ticket prices... etc etc... Embarrassing now... Like Richmond... I was at Richmond in 2004 spring race to see Dale Jr's win... 100,000 people there that night... Now... Just 51,000 seats.... And it looked like only 30,000 people were there.... That's a huge huge drop. When this stupid tv contract runs out. NASCAR is either dead... Or someone buys it who knows what they are doing.. aka Tony Stewart or Dale Jr...
Back then they would red flag it to make sure the mess would be cleaned up and have the race finish under green instead of having the field just do caution laps and it end up finishing under caution. Fans then hated races that finished under caution so the huge cheer when the red came out meant they knew they were gonna get a green finish.
The difference is Junior admitted it while Clint was covering it up when he spun out to intentionally help his teammate get into the chase. That’s why Junior was not penalized as hard as Clint was.

Last race that featured a Pontiac in the field which was driven by Hermie Sadler
Yeah, but the starting grid showed his car as a Chevy.
2:44:00 LETS GO KENNY SCHRADER!!! Big fan and always will be! Man can race anything and I mean ANYTHING!!!

This race like many from this era were brutal to rewatch because of the single file restarts. They should've started them way before 2009
Fun fact- this would be Kurt Busch's last win in the Sharpie car (his ensuing wins for Roush Racing all came in the Irwin or Crown Royal car)
Sharpie Hated Kurt behind His Back
Thanks for the race

My favorite period of NASCAR.
I wonder if they made Hermie's Pontiac as a Chevy on purpose in the starting lineup.
Man I miss pontiac.
That anthem arrangement was a choice…
I miss the gen 4 car so much :/
Not glued to the ground, more HP, actual PASSING, and drivers made a real difference.
It not available on mobile
1:27:58 good ole Gaughan
Back when NASCAR was consistent with rules
I miss that aggressive Kurt. Everybody punished him for it and brought him down. But now Kyle's no different but oh we need that in Nascar and rewarded for brash attitude at pit reporters.
Man I wish Rusty would’ve won this race

You Busted, Fox.

1:22:35 Every driver today. Vanilla and boring
2:13:44 BUSTED GOLDEN BOY

Dale spun on purpose as per his ownn words
The constant skipping on this video gets annoying.

It blows my mind why they would ever have a day race at Bristol. Why not have 2 night races?!
It makes the night race more special; it stands on its own.
