    Binge watched several of your videos. I have been feeling anxious because I start grad school tomorrow at a prestigious program that has a reputation for its difficulty. I’m also a Latina, first gen and I just have to say I learned so much from your videos. I gained confidence and excitement for what’s to come for me when before I was filled with doubts and fear. Today is my first day doing readings before class starts and you even helped me go in with a plan for how to tackle those. Endless thank you’s and I will totally watch everything you have posted and will continue to post. (:

      I literally showed BOTH my mom and my boyfriend this comment! I am so so happy that you found my videos helpful! I am so proud of you as a fellow first gen person for taking initiative, preparing yourself and MOST IMPORTANTLY believing in yourself! Please let me know if there are other ways/video topics I can support to help out! You got this! And definitely stay in touch!!

      @@BrisaMarie wow thank you so much for thinking of me!! i did mapps at uchicago and graduated not long ago. I am currently applying for research coordinator positions to do during my gap year while I apply for grad school. I had a hell of a year but it really was not too bad. Maybe its because I transitioned from STEM to social sciences, so I did find some of it easier. But it was a challenge, and I felt lots of imposter syndrome. But i grew alot and my mentor loved my thesis. I now know my research focus which is sociology of medicine. cheers to the future! you gave great advice in retrospect by the way. so glad i discovered your page. how are you?

      @@BrisaMarie it’s so important! I’m the first in my family to be in a phd program and all these unsaid and unwritten rules were rly tripping me up in the beginning. My relationships with older grad students saved me. Glad you’re doing this work!

      I am soooo sorry to hear that! It is so unfortunate that these experiences are very common. I do have a video that talks a little bit about how to navigate/get a new advisor if you are interested. (here: th-cam.com/video/n49wmVfyPkA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=q1cJNGZ9UhxSKm6F ) if not, thank you for taking the time to comment and share your experience.

    This is my favorite video! It has gotten me to the end of my Masters! I turned in the rough draft of my thesis and hope to graduate in May. I plan on applying to two programs for my PhD. The first is the school that I am attending now, and the other is a nearby university. I just can't handle the thought of moving again! As always thanks for all of the good advice and help along my journey!

    Wow this was a really great video! I'm thinking about going to grad school. It was great to hear about the gaslighting and ego issues in academia!

    • @BrisaMarie
      @BrisaMarie  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      how exciting!! Looking for grad schools was so fun because I felt like I could go anywhere and be anything hahaha! With all that said, even the negative things like "the ego" and "gaslighting" can be avoided or navigated so don't let this video discourage you! If you want it you totally could do it. It is just helpful to be prepared mentally for it so you don't get tricked into feeling like YOUR the problem. Cuz really it is the SYSTEM. Thank you for commenting, please let me know if you have any questions!

    thank you for this amazing video and for all of your words of encouragement.... As an immigrant, a child of a single parent and the first person in my family to go to college, the imposter syndrome kicks in all the time... tomorrow is second year of MFA and my first day teaching an undergraduate course for the first time, terrifying and exciting all at once to be making my dream - a reality. eternally grateful for finding your channel. thank you!

    Your videos are always helpful in reducing the stress of graduate school unknowns! The hardest part I am facing now is finding affordable rentals in a college town for my family! Especially important because I have to be on campus so early for GA training.

      I am so happy you find these videos useful! I try really hard to help people feel more confident and prepared for grad school! And yes!!! housing is a bit a of task when you are moving to grad school! I always suggest asking around if you havent. Sometimes departments know special programs or locations that can be really helpful! Other times you just have to rely on apartments.com lol at least I did hahaha GOOD LUCK! Please let me know if you have any questions or anything!

    I’m just starting out but oddly enough, my workload in terms of strictly reading is only slightly more but I was a history major in undergrad. However, the expectations of me and my analysis are much more demanding, not to mention research.
