  • HOW DO I PICK THE RIGHT CAM FROM MY DAILY DRIVER? WHAT CAM WORKS BEST ON A 4.8L, 5.3L OR 6.0L? DO I NEED A DIFFERENT CAM FOR DIFFERENT DISPLACEMENT LS MOTORS? DO I NEED A CONVERTER WITH MY DAILY DRIVER CAM SWAP? DOES A SMALLER 4.8L NEED LESS CAM THAN A 6.0L? HOW WELL DOES THE TRUCK NORRIS CAM WORK? WHAT STAGE TRUCK CAM SHOULD I GET? CHECK OUT THIS VIDEO WHERE I DEMONSTRATE WHY I PICK THE CAMS I SELECTED FOR EACH OF THE DIFFERENT DISPLACEMENT LS MOTOR, NATURALLY WITH FULL DYNO RESULTS.

I saw a video of a suburban that got a truck Norris cam. That cam had a healthy lope. Something I really don't want for a daily driver at 50 years old. At 20, it wouldn't have been enough. At 30, probably just right. But 50, not really.

I run a tsp stage 2 high lift cam and I have been very happy, the truck has 3.73 gears and stock converter and a mildly beefed 4l60e and honestly can’t feel any torque loss when you factor in the stock torque management kills the low torque when they are stock, it still rows great, 20ish mpg on the highway and a nice mild lope at idle and drive pretty much stock until you put your foot down

I wish I could get that good of MPG with my 02 5.3 Silverado 4x4. Earlier this year I installed 4.8 flat top pistons, TSP stage 2.5 cnc ported heads, a TSP low lift cam 550/550 ,208/214@ 114 lobe sep, Gibson stainless shorty headers (easy bolt up), replaced all 4 o2 sensors, etc.... Also have 373 rear gears and 33" tires. My average mpg is about 12. I'm still using the stock 78mm throttle body and the stock truck intake manifold as well as the stock exhaust system from the cats back. I see a lot of Silverado drivers getting much better mileage than me and I'm not sure why. The truck with this new engine was placed on a hub dyno and produced 290 rwhp. Was hoping for better

I just built a 5.3LS and used flat top 4.8L pistons to bump compression a half point, a Texas Speed Stage 2 Truck Cam (.600 lift), with one piece push rods, BTR springs and retainers. It has a Fitech Ultimate FI system on top and long tubes. It's bolted to a built 700r4 with a tight converter because I use it as a daily driver in my '68 C10 and it's a spirited ride, very spirited to say the least. It just melts the rear tires. Now that winters over I'm on the hunt for a 6.0L with a 4L80 out of a wreck for my next project (a '78 Monza) to drop it in and that will most likely have a Sloppy Stage 2 in it (Elgin 1840p) or a TN cam so I can't wait to see the numbers you get with it. The performance down low and up to 6000+ rpm with those truck cams makes up for a lot hotter cam and has much better driveability. That would be a test I'd like to see. 6.0L with a TBSS manifold and long tubes to test the TN vs. The Sloppy Stg. 2. Let's make it happen Richard. The Low Buck 500+ hp Wars.

When clients ask me about what they should run my first question is why and what. Why do you need a cam? What do you want out of the cam? Generally it's more power towing and/or plowing. Those I always recommend some type of RV cam (what we called torque cams long time ago) as usually it's a used truck with questionable maintenance and 300,000 miles as as mentioned glass transmissions. I'll refuse to put a higher then stage one in a high mileage engine with out checking the bottom end over, compression check, etc. As we all know those LS will last for ever if you maintain it properly.
That said I add a signed wavier that transmission damage may occur if it's not been rebuilt yet. Got smashed on that once and had to pay for a clients transmission 10,000 miles after the cam swap.

    @viciousrap700 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Complete honesty, Richard....I would be replacing the converter no matter which cam was chosen there. People will argue all day long about whether or not "X" vs "Y" camshaft needs a converter or not. I guess that's where it depends on how a person defines "need". That's like asking people to define "Street Car" everyone will tolerate something different based on budget or comfort. Stock converter and a cam with enough overlap and you'll get surge at idle at a stop light. I personally don't tolerate it but someone else might not mind it. They also might just want a camshaft based on sound alone and couldn't care less if it actually "works" with their combination.
My experience is this....I'm yet to see any LS based engine with a 4L60E behind it that didn't respond well to more converter. I can't begin to say how many "Bolt on" 4th Gen F bodies that I've seen with just the basics and a stock camshaft and they are working like crazy with a 4000 Yank converter. I'm sure someone will argue that to be too much converter....that's where we have to throw in what people will tolerate. High stall speed and yes, you're going to sacrifice drive ability but is that much converter "too much"? I guess that's up to the user. I can say this...the ET's don't lie and the 4000 Yank gets it done!
All the same stuff applies to the camshaft and it's always going to come down to what the user will tolerate. All anyone else can do is show the data. I have a 04 LQ9 Escalade. I'd probably use a TN cam or even "Lil Lunati" but either way I'm still probably going to throw at least a 3200 stall behind it.
Actually, I take it back, I would use neither of those cams and do what I always do and that would be talk to Ed Curtis at Flow tech Induction and I'd let him have my cam done and chances are, I'm going to be happier with whatever Ed does for me than any shelf cam and for not much more money.

My new question is I just picked up a 03 Chevy truck with the 4.8, first question is is there a part number for the torque cam tested in this video, and second what other parts would you recommend to compliment it (intake, exhaust, any tuning etc.) as this is my daily driver now? Thanks in advance and once again great video.

I’m wondering this winter if I should swap to a bigger cam to shift power up top more since this turbo produces a lot of power down low. This is on a 3300lb daily 5spd 3.55 gears

I have a 2012 half ton Sierra Denali with the L9H. Factory stall, longtubes, dual exhaust, Ported TBSS intake, S&B CAI and a custom CamMotion grind (right between their stage 1 & 2).
      I tune with HPTuners.
I Love how my truck performs. Lost very little low end torque BELOW 1700 rpm and picked up a ton of midrange and top end.
I average 15 mpg (being a crew cab and AWD that is awesome).
The supporting mods with my custom transmission tune really make it a pleasure to drive. I constantly get compliments on it's sound.
However, the idle is choppy (which I like).
Go for it man, you won't be disappointed. Just find a local HPTUNERS user because the tune changes are extensive (I tune LS engines locally & the E38 PCM has great resolution BUT is pretty finicky).

what we learned is that Richard does these test not based on reality but in a fixed manipulated "perfect world" scenario. he starts the video by saying that he is starting with a stock motor but then goes on to say "well, we changed the intake manifold to our desired one, then we put on the best exhaust setup for producing power."
how many guys out there are putting long tube headers on their trucks and going out and spending all the money that Richard sets these trucks up at? if we all had the money Richard has to throw at videos to put into our vehicles we have all the results. the fact is that Richard works in a bubble and talks in perfect scenarios that almost none of us live in. so disapointing

I’d be interested in seeing if a stroker kit in the Gen5 5.3 truck motor would make good power without a boosted application without increasing bore size if possible. Something I could do at home without having to send the block out to get machined. I’m pretty new to the Gen5 engines and just wish there were more vids and info on making more power. Like also, do 6.2 injectors increase power in the 5.3, or the same with a Gen5 6.2 cam in the 5.3. Thanks for good vids. Keep up the great work.
