    Hey… my wife and I met you in Grassy Bay… but you were going the opposite way shown on your map? Did you decide to reverse the loop? Hope you had a good time. Just back from 7 days… we used that exact green woods tarp. It does a good job. I think personal experience will be your best guide for future gear purchases. Smart to start small. Too late now but my best advice would have been to ditch that heavy beast of a canoe and rent a lightweight one from one of the many outfitters. Most now rent pack boats as well, which are super small and light. We always bring a hammock, as lazing in the afternoon once we reach a site is a big plus for us.

      Hey!! Yes I went the opposite way to take out the big portage on the first day instead of last. In the upcoming videos I address my actual route and where I stayed. Just wanted to give a reference. Trip was great. Could have done a few more days out there honestly.. felt like I was just getting in the groove. It’s a good little tarp, it came in handy last night! Yes that canoe is made for fishing, not portaging hah it did a number on me. I’m going to be keeping my eye out for something more suitable. Hammock would be nice. I had a couple naps on the trip. Was also wondering about doing the hammock tent. Those amoks look comfortable.

    Return the Fiskars saw it will fail you. Get a Silky Gomboy. They are absolutely amazing you won’t believe the difference.

    Looking forward to the videos, good luck out there! Happy yak makes some really good freeze dried meals (a bit pricey) but tastes great. I’m also planning a solo 5 day hike on Lake Superiors coastal trail this fall, can’t wait!

      Thank you!! I’ll keep a lookout for those. Grabbed a couple already but forget the brand. Lake Superior has some beautiful coast. Sounds like that will be an amazing trip!

    I used the fiska saw last year and is was ok however hardwood it did not perform well so this year i will be bringing an axe and better saw. I did battoning again though the hard wood made things difficult.

    • @castawaytv
      @castawaytv  ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s been a handy little saw for the price. I ended up buying an agawa on my way to Algonquin but I probably would have been fine with the Fiskars for this trip.

    Possibly a little late and not sure if anyone else commented but if you are in Algonquin you don’t need a shovel in your shit kit. Every campsite and many portages have thunder boxes.

    I like that you made a video to reach out and get help. I wish I had done that to avoid the mistakes we made on our first few trips.
    Your gear looks almost complete. I am not sure if you have some kind of GPS (inReach) for your route. An Axe is always optional in my opinion, as a decent, robust knife can split wood. A saw is a must.
    We too did that loop as our first backcountry trip. It is a good beginner's loop.
    Good luck on your journey. I'm eager to watch the video.

      Thank you for watching and sharing your advice!! I’ve made quite a few mistakes just going out for an afternoon of fishing so I thought with a trip of this scale, I might as well give myself the best chance and ask for help 😂
      I was just get a map at the portage store and mark out my route. Although I watched a Joe video where he struggled to navigate the Marsh.
      Ya that kind of what I was thinking. (I really enjoy axe splitting sequences) but I’m not sure it’s truly worth the weight. Any knife suggestions? I have a few Canadian tire specials but it’s about time I invest in a proper blade. Again appreciate you reaching out and I’m beyond stoked to share the adventure with you!

      @@castawaytv Canadian Tire knives are like their money: good to have, but we never use them😃.
      Get a Morakniv knife; they are really good value for money and basically indestructible.
      You can add an extra hour of travel time to your itinerary to avoid rushing to your destination. We all get lost, we are not Joe. He is in a different league.
      Watch Chris and Julia's (Chris Prouse) video if you want to get an idea of the route.
      Be safe and Good luck fishing * Hope you catch a whopper!

      @@castawaytv Oh one more thing did you get bear spray. It's always good to have it and not use it.

    • @cowbway8462
      @cowbway8462 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ErraticExcursion don’t need bear spray just an air horn. Bear spray is expensive. Air horns aren’t if you want spray get a can of wasp spray, works just as well. $10.99 opposed to $80.

      @Erratic Excursion Ahah facts!! And awesome, thanks! I’m heading to MEC today on my way out and I see they carry them.
      I plan to do my best to have early mornings to take advantage of calm waters and give myself lots of time to travel! I will definitely check them out!
      Hoping I can at least catch dinner🎣 hah
      And ya I was starting to think I should get some spray. Been seeing lots of bear photos on the facebooks page this past week.

    PS: Inexpensive (IMHO) lightweight camp gear: (non affiliate links!)
    1/ lightweight air mattress like the Klymit: www.amazon.ca/Static-Sleeping-Pad-Green-2020/dp/B07YP8MLNN/
    (wish it was thicker, but trying to keep things light)
    2/ lightweight inflatable camp pillow like the MEC one: www.mec.ca/en/product/5050-907/camp-pillow (can't say it's as good as your home pillow, but it does pack light and small)
    3/ For a stove I would get a small isobutane stove something like this one, $20 on amazon - good for 1-2 person small cookware: www.amazon.ca/RioRand-Backpacking-Canister-Camping-Foldable/dp/B00FFWJIOM You can't get much smaller. Then you buy those small isobutane fuel cylinders. SO much easier to deal with than liquid white gas (coleman fuel) stoves and pretty cheap.
    4/ get a tripod base to support the isobutane cylinder like this: www.amazon.ca/Camping-Folding-Canister-Cartridge-Outdoor/dp/B07LFZPJ85/
    5/ for water filtration just buy a BeFree -- I will never deal with a clay pump filter again, these are so easy: www.amazon.ca/Katadyn-Befree-Filter-Hydrapak-Collapsible/dp/B01M0MZ7NI/
    (NOTE: the flexible bottle can puncture - I have a pinhole in my brand new one after one trip, but I was NOT careful with it. Next time I'd put it inside the pack instead of outside.)
    For ALL of those amazon items, there are similar products, and I suggest you check ca.camelcamelcamel.com as the amazon prices go up and down. Set yourself an alert and camelcamelcamel will tell you when the price drops. Thats how I bought the befree and the klymit pad, just waited for the price drop.
