never knew they had a og gameboy version, i thought it was only for the gameboy color? loved this game as a kid, always played it more than my other games and it's the one that got me into text & point n click adventures.
@@gnocchidokie its a newer GB cartridge with colour support if used with a Gameboy Colour or Super Gameboy, much like Pokemon Gold/Silver or Link's Awakening DX
I loved all the ways to die in this game. That Grim Reaper fellow, he sure is a friendly guy in this! Always taking pity on you after yet another deadly mishap (my favorite is when you decide, inexplicably, to jump from a high cliff and straight into his waiting arms, haha).
Shadowgate is a classic. It, alongside the Deja Vu games and Uninvited are still fun to play nearly 3 decades later. I was already aware of this version's existence, but *NOT* its backwards compatibility with the original Game Boy. The only other GBC titles I can think of with backwards compatibility are the Game & Watch ports and Link's Awakening.
Nice timing, I've just finished the recently released 'Beyond Shadowgate'. There's just something really fun about the MacVenture formula; might be the numerous death descriptions. Gotta say, I never played this port...
@@yatheo2969 Yeah, I agree. I think that's in part because there's no time limit. In the original you had to remember about the torches, and even though the castle itself wasn't that big all things considered, some puzzles were really trick and you could get stuck for a while.
If i could ever find SHADOWGATE (CiB) for my Amiga 500, i would definitely cry of happiness 😹😺👍🕹️. The Game Boy version of this game looks as retrospectively brilliant as the NES version 😺👍🕹️. A big retrospective like 👍🕹️ from Vantaa, Finland 🇫🇮.
As an avid fan of the NES version, I did not know this version existed prior to this video. The 4 shades of green add that Gameboy aesthetic. The absolute worst version of this is the pc version which was also 4 colors, but used a CGA color scheme (pink, magenta, cyan, and white). Early pc games were hideous visually.
It does! As a matter of fact, that's how I played Shadowgate for the first time in November 2009. I didn't actually know the cartridge was GBC-enhanced until reading the comments as it was a childhood garage sale find.
I had the Game Boy color version and I absolutely loved it but I was so angry that I finished the game in like a week and games like that have no replay value. Lesson learned.
This is a great port of the NES classic, and the green screen suits it well.
Glad to hear that the music for -Gaming in the Clinton Years- _Shadowgate_ sounds so nice on the classic Game Boy!
I never knew about this version. Nice Video! Are you going to play the new one on Steam?
Too bad there's no Uninvited GB Port.
Shadowgate was one of those handful of games that, when it was new, was impossible to describe to most other kids and convince them it was good.

I thought the same thing! I had no idea there was a non-gbc version!

Surprisingly good sound
It’s every bit as good as the original in my opinion
I just love your Halloween season scary game uploads so damn much. 👻💕
Thanks, I'm happy to hear it! 🎃
I love this music so much. GB version looks surprisingly nice too! Didn’t know it existed till now 😅

I´m pretty impressed how great it looks on GB!

I really enjoyed Beyond Shadowgate but felt it was a bit too easy/forgiving compared to the original.

It's easy to emulate.
Man I love Shadowgate. What a classic.
GBC may not be the best version of it but it's pretty good for the hardware!

Oh man, that specific CGA palette is murder on the eyes.
Its so real that the Game Boy is even dirty.
Great on the n64 classic game
Holy Schnikes! As a huge fan of Shadowgate this looks amazing in the monochromatic mode. I wonder if this would work on a Super Game Boy.
maybe with the super famicom's Super Gameboy 2
I'm sure it would since it works on an original GB.

@@spartansfan1026 Thanks a lot for the information!
I honestly prefer this one on the gameboy
Wow that is the coolest game boy emulator ever!!!!!! What is it called ?
It's Retroarch with the DMG shader.

Is this similar to the Nintendo 64 version?
Nope, it's based on the NES game. Part of the same series though.
Se vería mejor jugando en GBC, el GB original no le queda muy bien 😅
