I only have one movie for you that no one has reacted to and it's one that I watch once a year. It's a fantasy western unlike anything else. "Purgatory" (1999) with Eric Roberts, Sam Shepard, Donnie Wahlberg and Randy Quaid. It's not near as good as "Tombstone" but I'm fairly certain you won't ever forget it. I need to see it once a year.

The wife wasn't able to let go because she felt his presence everywhere. She was in deep depression, So the fact that he is moving on means she will be able to move on, too.

In fact, he was the one who couldn't leave her, as he didn't know he was dead, and continued to live a married life "normally". The fact that he was still present in her life hindered her from overcoming loss and depression. When he says goodbye to her, he knows that his ex-wife's life would improve, precisely because he is imprisoning her.

The mother who poisoned the little girl had started poisoning the girl's little sister. Someone at the funeral was saying that now the other daughter was getting sick.
The wife couldn't see Malcolm. Her assistant was making moves but she wasn't ready yet. I think part of that was because, even though she couldn't see him, Malcolm was still in the house when he wasn't with Cole. Plus it had only been a year at most since Malcolm died.

It's tough to say how much time had passed. They show the anniversary scene where Malcolm was already gone but it doesn't specify if it's the first after his death so it doesn't really help getting the time line more accurate one way or another.
I have to admit that at first I was a dumbass thinking it had to have been at least a year because of that scene but luckily I finally got that people don't usually celebrate someone's death in any capacity 😂 Somehow I just related that to his death because of the context but it was still a pretty silly thing to do 😂 Even I'd like to think that I'm not usually that stupid I still know it wasn't my first or last mistake.

Only Cole (and Vincent) could see and hear the ghosts.
That is why he recommended Malcolm to talk to his wife *_when she was asleep._* That was how he could communicate with her. He could reach her through her subconscious, in her dreams
The wife was depressed, because she was mourning him. Which is why she was constantly replaying the wedding videos. And meanwhile she was kind of sort of starting a new relationship with the other guy from the shop, but she wasn't yet ready to move on.

    • @chris...9497

When the wife hugs the coworker, she momentarily stops thinking about Malcolm; that's when Malcolm breaks the glass in the shop door. And as he rushes away, he has his hand held to his wound. When she stops thinking about Malcolm, Malcolm begins to become aware of his death.
Also, she buried Malcolm without his wedding ring; she keeps it as a kind of touchstone, to feel close to him now that he's gone. You can hear her rationale in how she explains the sapphire ring to the couple in the shop.

I love all the subtle touches in this movie. The shooter in the beginning has a white patch in his hair. So does Cole. All the bad secrets are red: the basement door knob, the murderous mother at the funeral, the red balloon going up to the scary closet with the violent ghost inside, Cole’s red sweater signifying something bad will happen while he wears it. When they’re first at the funeral, someone in the background says, “And now the youngest is getting sick. It’s a nightmare.” Ghost Kiera went all the way to Cole’s house to save her baby sister. Bruce Willis said Haley Joel Osment, the boy who played Cole, was so heartbreakingly real, he’d do anything to help him. Bruce said his own tears were real when Cole was so miserable. Said he completely believed him.

Cole was 9. Not 12. Malcolm had his age written on the notes you were reading. The wife was just depressed over his death and couldn't move on despite being courted by her coworker. It was only 9 months or so later. Cole knew Malcolm was a ghost from the beginning, so he ran away from him to the church. Then, he realized Malcolm was trying to help him, which he did. Great reaction. I saw a response to this movie the other day I was so annoyed because one girl spoiled the twist for the other. You reacted the best. The film got nominated for 6 Oscars and should've won them all. Best Editing. Best Picture (Producer M Night Shyamalan), Best Director (M Night Shyamalan), Best Supporting Actress (Toni Collette- the mom), and Best Supporting Actor (Haley Joel Osment- Cole). One other thing, M Night does a cameo in ALL his movies, like Alfred Hitchcock, but his parts are getting more and more substantial. He played the Doctor. This movie launched his career as it was his best one right out of the gate He's had a few other good ones (Signs; the Unbreakable Trilogy- especially, SPLIT and I actually liked Knock at the Cabin and The Visit, as well) But nothing he's done since was as incredible as his iconic classic, his OG- The Sixth Sense.

The little boy was the only one in the movie seeing ghosts. Remember, he said the ghosts don't see each other either, so Malcolm couldn't see the ghosts even though he was dead himself. The wife was never aware that Malcolm's spirit was still there. She was just missing him and depressed he was gone. She could only talk to him when she was asleep (she probably thought it was just a dream when she woke up).

She senses ghosts in the same way anyone else does, feeling the cold, setting them manipulate items sometimes. And because Malcolm was at the house so often, she certainly felt that subconsciously. But she didn’t have any special powers to sense ghosts.

  • @chris...9497
    @chris...9497 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

    This movie was pure genius.
And it's a 'twofer'; you just watched Malcolm's movie, now you can rewatch it as Cole's movie and a whole lot will become obvious.
    Only Cole could see Malcolm.
Malcolm's wife was processing her grief. Whether her grief was holding Malcolm from moving on or he was haunting her, he also had 'unfinished business' to complete before he could allow himself to go. But he didn't even know he was dead.
Poor Cole saw ghosts everywhere. It didn't help that he was living in Philadelphia, one of the oldest cities in America and a large population center as well. You can surmise the time periods the ghosts are from by their clothes and sometimes by what they say. The man in the stairwell cubby (begging for the door to be unlocked and opened, even though the door was wide open) spoke of his master and a horse, so from the 1700s or early 1800s. The family (?) hanged in the school looked to be colonial. The kitchen suicide was from the 1950s. The boy who played with his father's gun was from the early 1970s.
The poisoned girl came looking for Cole to save her little sister. The mother had Munchausen's By Proxy, a psychological condition where a vulnerable person is MADE sick to get the admiration and sympathy of others; sometimes it's an older friend or relative, but usually it's a child who is the victim. The poisoned girl had been poisoned for several years until the mom gave her too much by accident. They just buried her and the mom is already doing the same to the little sister. It was Cole who took Malcolm along, not the other way around. And it sounds like the little sister could see her older sister's ghost, but Cole told her she wouldn't be back anymore.
The flashes in the photographs of younger Cole are what's termed 'orbs'; they're supposed to be photographic evidence of ghosts/spirits around the person. In Cole's case, it could be various ghosts or it could all be Grandma. The filmmaker, M Night Shyamalan (in cameo as the ER doctor who calls in the social worker) very carefully reserved the color red to identify when a ghost was present or involved in some way. Even things that are usually red he had changed to a different color. So, the torn sweater, the red cellar doorknob, the balloon, the highest volume tape recording settings, the poisoning mother's clothes, the 'sanctuary tent' Cole hides in...they're all red because of ghostly activity. Watch Malcolm's wife's clothing and blankets; mostly some shade of red.
The studio did not understand the film Shyamalan made; they marketed it as a horror story and gave it a foreboding music track. It's not a horror story, though. It's about family and love and redemption. The real fear in this story was the fear of rejection and unacceptance. Cole was afraid his mother wouldn't believe him, wouldn't understand, so he was afraid to open up to her. Malcolm couldn't accept he deserved the accolades the city of Philadelphia were heaping on him. Then an old patient comes back so tortured that he shoots Malcolm and then himself. Malcolm couldn't find self-forgiveness. Malcolm and Cole needed redemption and validation, and they gave this to each other. That's not a horror story. And, while 'dressed' in the genre of a ghost story, it had little to do with being about ghosts. It was a spiritual story.
Oh, and another fear: Malcolm's wife was always that he loved his career more than he loved her. She couldn't let the love of her life go until she felt sure he valued her as much as she valued him.
Loved watching your reaction. Now I have to go check out some of your other videos.

You just experienced the best combination of twist and performance by a child actor, in one movie. Haley Joel Osment absolutely killed this role, and it's a shame he lost the Oscar he was nominated for (it went to Michael Caine, who is a fine actor, but Haley deserved it more). Great reaction! If you want more from this director, a lot of his work is only so-so, but "Signs" is quite good.

His wife couldn't see him. He was gone, and she was struggling with moving on. Partially, I think, because she could sense his presence, even though she couldn't see him. That's why he said things would be different in the morning; he'd be gone, and she'd be able to move on. To Cole, however, he was another dead person. But at least one that wasn't as scary as the others. And just like the little girl, he helped Malcom with his unfinished business, but also allowed Malcom to help him -- which was Malcom's unfinished business.
    It's really a brilliant twist.

Bruce's character was a child psychologist. The night he was shot, he accepted an award for his work, helping children who faced unbearable circumstances. The intruder who broke into the house was a former patient. This former patient was still suffering from his childhood trauma. He accused the doctor of not helping him. Later in story, Bruce listen to old tapes of his past sessions with the intruder, when the intruder was a boy. Bruce's former boy patient had the same issue that Cole has: they both saw dead people. people who don't know that they are dead. Who see what they want to see. Both that boy and Cole were called "freaks". Bruce was able to help Cole, in a way that he could not help that first boy(later adult intruder). Bruce was able to help Cole come to accept his special "gift" for seeing dead people. Cole was able to understand and help those deceased people he saw to do whatever they needed to accomplish so that those dead people will move on. What Bruce didn't realize until the end was that, he too, was dead. Which was why he could never communicate with his wife, Anna. Or anyone else in hindsight. Cole always knew that Bruce was dead and that Bruce didn't know it. Now that Bruce helped Cole accept his purpose to help dead people to move on. Bruce not realizing is that Cole needed to help Bruce. Cole gives advice to Bruce on how to speak with his wife. Bruce follows Cole's suggesion and was able to communicate with Anna, subconsciously. That's when Bruce realized that he too was dead. Bruce help Cole and Anna so that they could move on. Cole helped Bruce so that Bruce could move on. If you watch this movie again you will see so many subtle hints throughout. Great writing, great script, great acting. 😎

Kara's mom was poisoning her (and after Kara died, the little sister) because she had a mental illness called "Munchausen Syndrome By Proxy." The mother poisoned her daighters slowly -- Kara was sick in bed for two years, someone said -- so that she could take care of them, nurse them, and get all the sympathy and attention for doing so, by others. She *needed* that sympathy and attention; she needed to be seen as a selfless caregiver, devoting her life to her sick children, an angelic martyr devoting all her life to caring for her sick children. And the sympathy and attention given to her multiplied greatly after her child died.
It's a weird mental illness, and very destructive. The mom needed to be confined to a mental hospital for treatment.
("Munchausen Syndrome," by itself, is when someone makes themselves sick, so they can be cared for and get sympathy and attention. They can be seen as "so brave" for suffering through whatever illness or injury they inflicted upon themselves.)

The wife never saw him. That's why it seemed like she was always giving him the cold shoulder and ignoring him. Only the boy could see him. Notice even when his mom was sitting in the living room with Malcom when Cole came home from school, they were not talking. Just sitting there. One of the best twist endings ever.

  • @i_love_rescue_animals
    @i_love_rescue_animals 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Great reaction. No, the wife was not seeing her husband (Bruce) if you notice, in ALL the scenes where Malcolm (Bruce) is "interacting" with his wife, like when he was late to their anniversary dinner and when he was sitting with Cole's Mom in the living room, he / they weren't actually talking. The wife and Cole+s mom never saw Malcolm (Bruce). It's great to re-watch, knowing what you know now so you can see all the genius ways the filmmaker hides from us that Bruce is dead. Another thing - Bruce's character never moves anything in the physical world, except for his own pen and paper and when he tried to open the basement door. For example, when he went to sit down with his wife at the restaurant, he didn't move the chair and she just took the bill and said "happy anniversary Malcolm" just under her breath because he was already dead (and she didn't see him). We all thought she was mad at him for being late. You wore the right color shirt for this movie - red! Red plays a big role in the film. Red is around whenever there are ghosts, or in a key part of the film. For example, Cole wore a red sweater at the birthday party when he was attacked, the mom who poisoned her daughter wore a red jacket at the funeral and was arranging a bouquet of red roses, the doorknob to the basement was red, etc, etc. Really great movie.

She was never angry with him he thought she was because like the kid said ghosts only see what they want to see when he went to the restaurant she wasnt speaking with him because he was dead she though she hated him but she was celebrating his annivarsay with him

Fun fact: for the game Final Fantasy X, the big plot twist in an early draft of the story is that the main character, Tidus was dead the whole time. He was killed when Sin destroyed Zanarkand and became a wandering spirit for 1000 years. But they changed it because the writers were worried it would be too similar to this movie, which came out during the making of the game. So they (spoilers) made one of the other playable characters dead the whole time.

    1. Haley Joel Osment played Forrestt Gump Jr, in "AI" and absolutely kills in this.
    2. I first knew when he met his wife when she was morning him alone at the anniversary meal. Only one place setting.
    3. I watched my now ex to see when she got it but she never picked it up until the reveal.
    4. They help each other.
    5. Cole knew he wouldn't see Malcolm again.
    6. Cole to Malcolm, "How can you help me, if you don't believe me?" "Some magic's real".
    7. A fun movie for review of a Bruce Willis is, "The Last Boy Scout". HINT HINT

The mother of the little girl who was being poisoned had a condition called munchausen syndrome. It's when a parent, usually the mother, needs to feel needed. They often keep their child sick in order to feel as if they are saving them. Unfortunately for this mother, her daughter did not survive.

I have always thought that was the step mother and the man had remarried after his wife died. She did not seem upset at all that the girl was dead so I figured it was an intentional homicide not a Munchausen Syndrome by proxy situation.
