When I was 14 my guitar instructor told me "If you want to be a great lead guitarist - you need to study the music of John Coltrane" and that started a journey that led to hearing Pharoah Sanders - I've been a fan for over 40 years, and today am listening in honor of his amazing life. RIP.
This is easily one of my favorite songs of all time and I have barely scratched the surface of Sanders' discography. Ever grateful for this brilliant bit of music. It fills me with genuine hope. And its inclusion in a video game helped to create one of the best moments I've ever experienced with any piece of media. Rest in peace ❣️
I wandered down the street on a chilly night in Hollywood and heard THIS! This man is a GIANT in musical talent and presence...even now, coming up on 16 years later; he is terrific in understanding and a LION among lambs! He understands GOOD PLAY!!! Happy New Year 2017!

When I first heard him on Coltrane's "Live at the Village Vanguard again!" I didn´t like him for his squeeking and screaming sounds. But I just came to know that this guy can swing so hard. He makes EVEN ME wanna dance, not to speak of my 15 month old son.
A living giant, so pure and full of love. I grew up in E.St. Louis, Il. in the same neighborhood with Amos Leon Thomas, while in Detroit in the early 70's, caught them live and Amos introduced me to the band, a very spiritual moment!
In 72 we were able to drink at 18. Emotionally ready to handle Phatoah and Leon?? Never. Bakers Keyboard provided some of the greatest moments of my life. They are why I can stand up for others' less fortunate.
His playing, singing and tribal dancing is one of the essences of what Jazz should be for me.. Always in tears when I hear this performance.. Thank you Pharoah
The guy absolutely knew how to leave space, for the other musicians and the composition, just don't play anything, but when you play, you KICK ASS. RIP.
I wonder when he howls and beats his chests, does that remind him of seeing John Coltrane doing the same thing 45 years ago at Temple University. When Rashied Ali asked Coltrane why he was doing this, Coltrane said he just couldn't find nothing to play on the horn.
Pharoah Sanders held in very high esteem in the Jazz world as one of the finest ever, especially with his brand of spiritually etherall Jazz, always value for money, certainly one of the greatest saxophonists to have blown on the instrument, with tracks like the Gathering & Jitu to his bow, a living legend

I hear ya. Thankfully, with most of the jazz greats there is a wealth of recordings from every stage of their careers-almost more than you could ever really listen to in a lifetime. Trust me, I have been trying!
What an inspiring music soul and artist,,,,to me ,,you can play in that level only if you go deeper,,,beyond scales, harmony,,riffs,,,tons of musicians are in this level,,, Sanders is more than the purely musical,,,,,,that makes a unique and unrepeatable voice. Enjoy. Life is better with art like this and you are better as well,,,I guess. Cheers

I don't listen to jazz often. It's rare that I do, even rarer that I enjoy a jazz song or artist. But this song is something entirely different. It doesn't just resonate with something in me. The sax feels like it's in tune with something primal. A desire to scream. A desire to break forth from the chains. It's a fitting and eloquent thought that this song is named You've Got to Have Freedom. It's all I feel when I hear it. My heart wants to wail like a banshee. My soul wants to be free. Also fitting that this man's name is Pharoah. This man's legacy is a dynasty of one; the legendary head of state of Jazz. (Sorry for all the hyperbole in this. This song awakened something in me I didn't know existed.)

Sonny Rollins has a lung condition (pulmonary fibrosis) that hasn't allowed him to play for years.
