    My brother and I went through Virginia many years ago (before everyone had cellphones) towing a truck I bought in PA. We had a blowout on the i-haul trailer and we’re on the side of the road, when a highway patrol officer pulled up. He talked to us for a few minutes. Noticed the radar detector and told us we weren’t supposed to have it. That was that. He took my brother to the next exit to call u-haul for a tire repair. We were there for almost 5 hours. That cop hung around, telling us stories. bullshitted with us even after he was off duty. My brother and he became friends and would often call each other. We live 3 states away. Coolest cop ever!!!

      Bill1USMC,
      Thank you very much. It has been proven in court to be a corrupt law to start with because a detector (at least originally) operated in a public frequency range typically that you garage door opener operates within. I have family heritage in Virginia going back to the 1670s but don’t live there, and it has always chaffed my ass to have to turn off my detector when I was in state, because it simply makes you susceptible to being out of your speed in an area that you have never driven, and you can be doing 55 on a mountain road and come around a curve into a town that changes speeds so quickly that you have to brake to get back to the limit rather then just releasing the accelerator on a road that you have good visibility and distance with no pedestrian issues on.
      Anyway thanks for your service in both capacities!

    I find it amusing that radar detectors are illegal. to the point they have to make a detector detector. Now someone from Virginia needs to invent the detector detector detector to detect the detector detectors so they can turn off their detector when it detects the detector detector. ;-)

    • @TheDisplacedalaskan
      @TheDisplacedalaskan 8 ปีที่แล้ว +101

      The detector detector works based on how a radio receiver resonates, which generates (radiates) a spurious transmission a little above the frequency it is on. The radar detector is a radio receiver on the radar frequency and it radiates this spurious transmission, which is what the detector detector picks up. You could theoretically create a detector detector detector, but you can actually just build better shielding for your detector and defeat the detector detector by preventing your detector from radiating anything detectable by the detector detector. Not that that is confusing or anything haha

    Everyone is still up in arms over this video..... Again, both officers were very friendly and professional and I returned the same courtesy. Yea there are subtitles posted on the video that may indicate a radar detector, but I assure you, 3 weeks later(after this was posted)the truck was searched again and no illegal devices were found. If the truck was searched right now, now "switches" or "knobs" are installed on or in the truck. Yea I posted subtitles on a video that may or may not convey what or wasn't inside the truck. Had I posted "there's a dead body under the bunk" what would the comments been? I wasn't speeding or breaking any law the day I was pulled over. They did their investigation and I was sent on my way , with a clean bill. So all these Monday morning lawyers need to relax. It was a win in my book. I have a clean driving record and DAC. I don't run down families in a coke raged fury. This is just a simple video , shot with a go-pro that happened to catch a moment of my day. I voluntarily allowed the police to search my truck. I had nothing to "hide". I do enjoy reading the debates and seeing these very strong views of the police doing their job. Yea , 20 minutes of my life was wasted, so be it. I find it humorous that complete strangers can assess my character over a tongue in cheek video. Life is full of cat and mouse games. I won one, trust me, it's not always this easy. So everyone needs to relax and not get so bent over a video that is vague at best. So have fun defending me or degrading me, either way , I am sitting back laughing!

    The reason for the detector is that the speed limits are set artificially too low so they can become revenue generating devices for the state, police etc. Set the limits properly and the public does not have to resort to having detectors

    • @rcmodelr

      Speed limits set too low in who's opinion??? The one who thinks he should be allowed to drive as fast as the vehicle can go, or the old couple who thinks nobody should be allowed to drive faster than the normal Summer breeze can blow a leaf???
      Remember... You can't take a "30 mph" curve too fast... I'll leave it up to YOU to decide if I mean that if you take the curve much faster than 30 mph you'll probably crash, or if I mean that even though DOT says the maximum speed in the curve is 30 mph, you can actually safely make the curve traveling at up to 80+ mph. If you enter the curve faster than posted and crash... I'll be happy to nominate you for a "Darwin Awards Recipient."

      rcmodelr. Speed limits are seldem right outside of the city. Theres a huge number of factors that go into save speed. Like weather type of car condition of car healty and age of driver experience of driver and so on. Who is to say I should go to jail because I broke a limit a group of elitest made. That turn may be only 25 mph in the rain in a big rig or it could be 80 on a good day is a sports car

      wchadb817 "Speed limits are seldom right outside of the city." According to whom? You? It's YOUR call as to what the proper speed on a public roadway should be? Isn't that just you being elitist? Speed limits are ALWAYS exceeded. If they say it's 20MPH, people drive 30MPH. If they raised it to 100MPH people would drive 110-120MPH. Who are you to determine what safe speeds are, without ANY driver data to extrapolate and analyze to determine the most effective;limit to post?

    • @wchadb817
      @wchadb817 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      ozmedia Im saying if I work a 12hour shift drive home on the same road I drove for years to and from work and do 75 in a 55 at 3am I should go to jail? That's crazy and im not trying to set a speed so no that's not me being an elist

    • @oz_media
      @oz_media 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      wchadb817
      If you drive 75 in a 55 zone are you not breaking the law? Pretty black and white there I think.
      I wouldn't consider it a jailable offense, though not sure what your state laws are regarding repeating such offenses, that's entirely irrelevant though.
      What I see is that you feel that, at certain times, you should be free to speed at 20 MPH over the posted limit because you are tired after a long work day, are just trying to go home and traffic is minimal.
      More so, you should be able to use a prohibited device (as the OP did in this video) in an attempt to stop yourself from being caught speeding. Acknowledging the fault in your actions by trying to protect yourself from the consequences.
      This particular stop obviously wasn't anytime near 3AM but I suppose you are no longer talking about the video that was posted, despite that being the subject of my previous comments.
      To summarize:
      You are trying to justify, using a prohibited device to protect yourself from fines while breaking traffic laws?
      People do this all the time, does that make it clever though? People shoplift all the time and get away with it too. That doesn't make it clever or correct in any way, shape or form though.

      This is highway patrol. They don't deal with such matters. When such matters are called in, they are given top priority to police of that jurisdiction. These police enforce traffic laws because believe it or not, they are designed for safety. Someone going 10-15 over may not seem like a big deal but depending on the vehicle 10-15 over at highway speeds means much more damage can happen much faster if an accident were to occur which is why speed limits are enforced.

      Yep, thats what ego does to a person. All a cop wants is a win. The adrenalin of control. Purely ego driven. People might overlook that ego isn't just a word, an attitude. It's a real damn thing that is highly destructive..Ego has caused wars, brought down empires and kindoms. All the police training in the world is essentially useless when ego comes into play. The types that mostly become cops have an ego to begin with. Ego is an exact definition that encumbers all of the following, narcissisism, conceit, arrogance, anger issues, ,often bipolar, various multiple personality type disorders,depression independent of bipolar, which highly contributes to suicidal tendencies of cops. Politicians are trying to make it impossible for gun ownership ,and yet these are the types holding guns. And that's said in all seriousness. What does it take for a cop to finally lose their ego,, they kneel on someone's neck for 9 minutes already handcuffed, kill that person and go to prison for life. Now where's your ego.

    20 years ago, I was driving back from Disney world to Pennsylvania. Right as I got through the top of North Carolina around 1 AM, it was a torrential rain. I was in the right lane doing 45 miles an hour with my Flashers on. I was somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 miles into Virginia, when a state trooper lit me up. I had a radar detector on my windshield with a stay awake feature. Every 60 seconds it would make a loud alert and I had to push a button to silence it. He walks up to my driver's side glass and tells me to roll the window down. I said I don't think So. 2" is enough. I'm not letting 6 gallons of rainwater come in my driver's window. Why did you stop me. He said "my VG2 has detected a radar detector". I said "I know I wasn't speeding, because my cruise control is set to 45 because I can barely see. He said "I know I didn't Have you for speeding and I appreciate the safe driving. Didn't you see the sign at the border that said radar detectors are illegal? I said "are you freaking kidding me I'm doing the best I can to see 20' in front of me and you want to know if I'm reading signs". He said I understand. give me your license and registration and hand me the detector because I need the serial number. So I did my very best to go as slow as possible looking for my registration and my wallet. If I'm being inconvenienced, hes taking a bath.. He handed me the ticket and I said "you wonder why people hate you?"

      Dave Pragel, You dont need a warrant if you have probable cause. You do need a warrant if you can’t get probable cause. Reasonable suspicion is what you were referring to. It all depends upon what is included. An officer can stop and detain you under probable cause if he sees you breaking the law (speeding). However, that probably cause does not extend to searching your vehicle. If, during the stop, he smells marijuana he now has a reasonable suspicion you have a controlled substance but he can only search if you give him permission. Next step is the drug dog. If the dog hits on your car it is ruled probable cause and he can search without warrant.

      @ If people weren't pulled over for driving the speed of traffic or slightly over then there'd be no need for a radar detector. Only way to prevent a speeding ticket is to drive slightly under the speed of traffic. And because of that traffic is increased significantly not only because of the average speed on the highway but also because of the lack of passing done in passing lanes in fear of getting a speeding ticket. In that situation speeding to pass quickly and move back to the right lane would prevent more accidents than it causes. But again, many people don't do that in fear of getting a speeding ticket.

    I grew up and worked in Va for many years. I believe it is one of only two states where Radar Detectors are illegal and subject to seizure. I knew and worked with a Pennsylvania man who rented a room Monday-Friday and worked as a Mechanic in Loudoun County. A Trooper pulled him over and demanded his Radar Detector. The man said unless you draw that pistol, I'm not giving it to you. The Trooper drew down on him and the man complied. After receiving his ticket, the man drove directly to the local Magistrate's Office and he swore out a Warrant against the Trooper for Armed Robbery. The judge conceded but told him don't ever let me see your face again. This was the only account I ever heard of a person receiving their property back after a State Police seizure. The DMV has a ridiculous point system too and it's a trap, a revolving door that is very difficult to get out of because it is a HUGE source of income for the Commonwealth.

      You DO know that this story is not apocryphal (in any way) -- it is just another 'good guy (truck driver) v bad guy (police officer enforcing the law -- a law that many do not care for) story and is total 'horse-hockey', RIGHT? Find something that people feel strongly about or in a 'containing' site (etc.) and put it here. You may not have 'invented' this but you are just repeating and supporting the meme -- this meme, that is totally bogus.
      It's like the story about (name a highly sought after ball player here) where a woman is in an autograph line and says: 'My son would just DIE to have your autograph, MR. XXXX ('Adding a name' to increase authenticity and the chance that someone is going to 'buy it')!' To wit, Mr. XXXX retorts: 'Well, may he rest in piece!!!' Same principle -- one gets to see the bad guys get 'owned'. There isn't a State Trooper alive that would draw their firearm just because they were given an 'or else' ultimatum for something like this. The local FOP wouldn't even be able to save their jobs if they did that. At the worst, they would arrest the law-breaking' driver -- most definitely they would NOT draw their service weapon. If you think that they would, well that's how one can explain how you bought into that one.

    • @jwenting
      @jwenting 10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      the idea is that you stay at or below the limit even without a detector...
      I've seen many a car and truck drive up to a radar trap doing 20-30 over the limit, then hit the brakes hard a few meters before they'd get zapped, never mind what's coming up behind them.
      THAT causes accidents and that's why they're outlawed in many places.

    • @TheRobinea
      @TheRobinea 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      jwenting I agree with you! My husband had bought me one, and after that thing was in there for about four days, I took it out. THE ONLY reason my husband said he got it was because, "it looked cool in the car." WTH? That constant beeping is very nerve wrenching and I could see how it would cause people to brake, in which case DOES cause accidents to happen. If I DO get pulled over for speeding, IT'S BECAUSE I WAS SPEEDING, and I'll take the ticket ANY DAY over an accident. But I HATE radar detectors, and I'm not a cop, I just don't like the constant beeping, and I could care less if it "looks cool"! I'm not TRYING to look cool, which is what I told my husband as I ejected that thing from my car. It's not enough I have to listen to the kids squabbling amongst each other in the back seat, and then HE THOUGHT I was gonna listen to that constant beeping? hahaha.... UH, NO! I just try to go the speed limit or at least stay within 5 mph of it, and well, IF I do get caught, then write me a ticket.

    • @jwenting
      @jwenting 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Robin Renee Bednarczyk
      indeed. I used to speed all the time, almost never driving less than 10-15kmh over the limit and usually closer to 30 (which is the maximum here beyond which you get a court appearance).
      About 5-6 years ago I decided to stop doing that, drive at or around the limit at all times.
      Total extra travel time per day? A few minutes at most. And a LOT less stress along the way.
      Have had 1 speeding ticket since, buggers placed a camera against the back of a sign indicating a temporary reduction in the speed limit and I let off the gas a few seconds too late. Went about 1kmh faster than the cutoff below which they don't ticket for speeding (compensation for imperfections in equipment).
      Never did get many tickets in the first place as I know pretty much every fixed camera and was constantly, paranoid almost, scanning the side of the road for anything suspicious and hitting the brakes seeing something, anything at all, out of place, but wouldn't you be rather watching traffic than look out for new "bushes", "dumpsters", "broken down cars" parked off the hard shoulder?
      Not worth it, and with the ever increasing number of laser guns radar detectors are (where still legal) ever more ineffective anyway.
      And it's so satisfactory to see the nerd rage build in the faces of people tailgating you in BMWs and Mercs because you're not zooming along at 150kmh but rather sticking to the 120kmh limit :)

I still think it's stupid for a trooper to tie up traffic on the shoulder of the highway putting himself and the trucker in harm's way and causing all the other traffic to have to cram into the left lane. If I made the rules the shoulder would be a breakdown lane with rare exceptions like a fleeing criminal or getting a wreckless driver off the road. I am a truck driver too, and I have been harrassed and bullied by local DOT enforcement officers so many times that I am afraid to even take my truck on the road anymore. The sad part is that all of my company's trucks have electronic logs and a "driver improvement monitor" that monitors how I drive, how quickly I accelerate or decelerate, how fast I take turns (by a G meter), and it also has a camera that monitors my lane centering and goes off if I come close to a lane or get within 2 car lengths of another vehicle. To an extent, it can be a good thing because it makes you better as a driver, but it is also alarming because when they malfunction, they can also take your career to the shitter with them. Technology has gone way too far and the companies are following suit. They trust a malfunctioning computer system over the driver. Gone are the days when we could use 2 or even 3 log books. In a sense, yes. But the point of owning a radar detector is to go as fast you please when no radars are around.
      I personally have 3. But I don't use them for speeding. I use them to detect cops. I have an anxiety disorder where if I'm near a cop, I start panicking. Despite doing anything wrong.
      So for me, I have to avoid cops or troopers if I want to drive safely on the road. You don't want to be driving and suddenly get a panic attack.

    RADAR detectors cannot be made illegal, and the Commonwealth prosecutor will "nolle pros" ( not prosecute ) an appeal of a first-level court conviction because they don't want to risk an appeal going to the federal courts who would invalidate Virginia's bogus un-Constitutional law.
    Also, cops don't know how to write proper code for RADAR detectors, so you can review the law code and perhaps convince a judge that the ticket is meaninglessly and illegally vague and inappropriate, not bearing witness to anything specifically against code.
    Regardless, this is the US, folks, where radios and radio receivers are Constitutionally protected free speech and cannot be made illegal.

      .
      Thanks, do you have a reference to a specific legal challenge at SCOTUS to Virginia / DC RADAR prohibitions, [ @@@taplinger ] -- Google searches are all over the place and I can't find a FREE SPEECH case versus Virginia / DC prohibitions against RADAR detectors.
      I found one that seemed to pivot on whether or not the police had evidence of a power source for an electronic device, of all berserker things to argue -- they guy wanted out of a ticket, but was not challenging the law altogether.
      I'm wondering if only "get me out of this ticket" arguments have been brought to SCOTUS / SCOVA so far, but "declare this law unconstitutional" have not been brought to SCOTUS / SCOVA yet, on any grounds.
      Something is behind my experience of Commonwealth Attorney's "nolle pros" any RADAR detector conviction appeals.
      ( a ) They are happy with the revenue at the first level courts, don't want to waste time at second level courts because it's not worth it to them money wise, or ( b ) they do not want to risk an appeal moving up to declaring the law unconstitutional for any reason ( but in my analysis, on free speech grounds ).
      Thanks for exploring this with me.
      __________
      PS -- I proudly display my RADAR detector in Virginia and DC, and have explained to cops that I use it to test their veracity, for example, suppose their RADAR gun fails while they are on duty ... do they go back and get another RADAR gun, or do they "fake it" and write tickets anyway? By having a RADAR detector, I can test and witness and testify that their RADAR gun did not ( or did ) emit any RADAR. The cops actually paused and had nothing to say on that one ( too close to home ? ) ... and eventually backed off arguing, and left it at "tell it to a judge".
      A friend just responds, when told by cops that RADAR detectors are illegal in Virginia, "... yeah, and so is eating your wife ..." ... ( I am in awe of folks who can get away with shit-talking to armed police ! )

Maybe I remember it was challenged to lower federal court and failed. What I see now is no person or group has the resources to bring it to SCOTUS. Too bad. It is unconstitutional on its face. The use of a radar jammers is deemed so serious that it could lead to a felony charge, a hefty fine, and even jail time in the State in which such a device is used.
