TH-cam comments are at present disabled in our channel, to the displeasure of some. However, each video has a prominent link to the associated open thread that appears on our blog. In the past we've tried opening up the channel to comments, but we found that a very high number of episodes wound up being flooded with a combination of spam, long winded apologists, and various obscene or misogynistic comments directed at various hosts by people with an axe to grind. This seems to be the nature of TH-cam comment sections, in our experience.
We do moderate the blog, the same way that we moderate chat during the show, as well as comments on our Facebook group. For comment sections that are "officially" associated with our show (and, to a much lesser extent, channels that may give the unintended appearance of being official), we prefer not to play host to straight up ad hominem attacks and bigotry. As a general policy we do not block commenters simply on the basis of disagreement with our point of view. However, we do prefer discussion environments that don't actively chase off more reasonable contributors.

If you ever thought Christian fundies are devoid of logic, just try debating with a Muslim fundie. I actually had one tell me that the Koran is true because there's a passage in it that says something like "Allah gave man iron from heaven." When I pointed out that while yes, meteorites do contain iron, most iron comes out of the ground, he claimed that when Allah created Earth he put the iron in the earth's core which all came from the Heavens (aka space), so therefore the Koran is 100% true.

      @dx1450 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

But that's not what the Koran said, I think the quote was something like "Allah sent down iron from Heaven" as in all iron fell from the sky. But yes, that's the same argument the Muslim apologist was making, ignoring the fact that neither the Koran nor the bible explains how the earth was formed by elements in space, as scientists have determined. It's yet another attempt to shoehorn science into religious texts.

I think the caller abruptly hung up after Matt's argument from incredulity response because he got to THINK for a change. The sudden sensation of that experience was very new to him, especially after a long time of being told what to believe. And it's helpful that he resides in a secular environment where his ability to think more will not be hindered.

What the caller didn't understand is that scientists are talking about how the magnetic pole may change, or may be in the process of changing, as it has many times in the past. The sun will rise the same as always. But the sun will only appear from the west if we re-name the current south pole to now be the north pole, i.e., if we call the magnetic pole north (now the south pole) then the sun will rise from the west.

WRONG! I mixed a liter of salt water with a liter of fresh, and I only ended up with 2 liters of salt water. Not only do they not mix, the fresh water was so repelled by the salt water it evaporated and the salt water doubled in volume to push it out.

I find it very telling that nearly every religious caller claims to have evidence of their God.
Yet not one of them actually present evidence. So I think we can create a new definition.

The reason the caller asked the same exact question immediately after Matt explained that atheism isn't the belief that god doesn't exist, is because theists check-out and stop listening the second they don't hear you say "you're right, there's totally a god! I know this because the bible tells us!"
This is why so many theists claim that atheism is a religion.

You go to your doctor because you’re unwell, something isn’t right. Even the dog has become
especially needy these past few weeks. Your doctor examines you and quickly
identifies the source of your unwellness. He tells you that your illness is curable-that’s
a relief-and presents two simple treatment options. The first option derives
from a text written in Europe 1200 years ago, real scholarly work. Your doctor
so happens to have an interest in ancient medicine-just something to do in his
spare time besides playing golf and visiting vineyards. Oh, and he loves takin’
the Porsche for a spin with his buddies at the country club. There’s no
evidence that shows this treatment indeed works, but it’s what the author of the
text and many regarded as experts during that time believed would cure your
affliction. God knows why. Hell, the treatment was used for several hundred
years because no one had any brighter ideas. It took a real rebel to steer the
thinking in a different direction, one that probably saw him decapitated or
burned at the stake. I’d say the latter.
The second option is a drug that has been on the market for two years, specially developed for
treating your illness. That’s comforting. The drug isn’t the first of its kind
but the result of many years of trial and error. Again, real comforting. The
fact that it’s on the market and prescribed by physicians tells you that it’s
been rigorously tested. And so it should be: our standards have increased
substantially in the last 1200 years. Accordingly, your
doctor is confident the treatment will work and assures you there’s no need to
plan your funeral just yet. But go easy on the sugar and up the exercise to
    three times a week.
Which treatment do you choose? A no-brainer, yeah?
When a person treats the Bible as a source of truth it strikes me as a severe case of ignorance, not
just the usual kind of ignorance, the kind we all have in one way or another. Only
a modicum of critical thinking reveals that our understanding of the world has
developed considerably over time-and thank Christ it has. That isn’t to say
that we have all the answers, that we’re right about everything, but we wouldn’t
be able to do the things we do today if we only accepted ancient teachings as a
source of fact and truth. Any writer will tell you the final draft is always
better than the first, that’s just the nature of things. Let me put it another
way: imagine you have five hundred years to learn how to play tennis and a body
that doesn’t age beyond twenty-three (that number sounded good, don’t ask me
    why). See where I’m going?
Many Christians talk about context when interpreting the Bible, and it’s exactly that which such
people lack. Good old-fashioned context. Times have changed, my faithful
friends. More disturbing is the fact that the same people cherry-pick the parts
of the Bible they like and dismiss, “ignore”, the parts they don’t. I’m
talking about the bits that advocate slavery and polygamy, wholesome stuff
like that. I can only guess that this is because their modern understanding has
somehow revealed to them, only in part, that some things in the Bible don’t
make sense, or that some things contradict the real important stuff. If only
these people applied that kind of thinking to everything in that marvelous book
of theirs. And why stop there? Why not look at other religions? Why not examine
the merits of, say, Islam or Buddhism? Why should Christianity get all that
brain power? Are mum and dad Christian? Did someone at school put the fear of
    the Christian god in you?
People are entitled to an opinion, which is the very reason I’m sharing this, but I cannot fathom
why some people are so hellbent on trying to convince others that their religious beliefs are correct.
Care to share any empirical evidence? I’m talking about the good stuff that the second treatment option
is based on, obtained through application of the scientific method. The Bible is only evidence of what people many hundreds of years ago thought and believed, but that doesn't mean it's true. Call it a history book,
if you will, but it‘s not a science book, it doesn’t reveal the secrets of the universe anymore than the Harry Potter books do. Harsh? Maybe. Wrong? Who can say?

Billy & Jimmy drive through a gas station to fill up their truck. They notice a sign saying "Enter here for a chance at free sex!"
They wander inside and ask the attendant how to enter. The attendant says that they have to guess a number between one and ten.
Billy guesses five. The attendant says, "Sorry, but the number is eight."
Jimmy guesses seven and the attendant says, "Sorry, but the number was three."
As the two drive away, Jimmy turns to Billy and says, "You know, I think that competition was rigged."
Billy --the smarter of the two--replies, "Naw, it's on the up and up. My wife won twice last week."
And there you go, folks. Cherry picking in a nutshell
Cheers, jimmy. Clear and simple. Just the way apologist hate it, lol

He's assuming its like turning a compass upside down thus east would become west and vice versa. But he's too stupid to realize that the new west would just be the same direction as the old east.

Don't forget, Muhammad split the moon in half and then put it back together when no one on Earth was looking.
