  • In part two of my chat with Nigel Roebuck, the world's leading motor racing historian and journalist, we talk some more about the colossus that was Sir Stirling Moss. Nigel describes Stirl's relationship with Fangio (his team-mate at Mercedes in 1955); his epic win at the Nurburgring in the fog in 1960 with the Birdcage Maser; and his long discussion with Dan Gurney about which driver Dan rated higher - Stirling or Jimmy Clark. This video also includes little-seen AP Archive footage from the 1955 British GP at Aintree.
    With thanks to AP Archive

Thanks, too, to Nigel S Roebuck.

There'll be a third and final part to our Moss-Roebuck series out shortly - and in the next video Nigel WILL talk about the Behra pics in this study. Sorry for the omission this time; we ran out of space. In part three we'll also be talking about Stirl's long and beautiful relationship with Rob Walker.
    Thanks for watching.
    Peter.

Stirling Moss could drive around practically any mechanical, tire or fuel issue. Completely sympathetic to the car. Very fast, smooth and fearless...RIP

Fangio had the generosity to “allow” Stirling his moment.Juan Manuel Fangio had nothing to prove to anyone and his autograph is one of my treasures

Peter and Nigel thanks for doing this. I was able to see Stirling Moss only once (at Riverside in 1960). I was only eight years old but I will never forget that race. Stirling Moss remains one of my three all time favorite driver’s, along with Dan Gurney and Jim Clark. Please do more if these, they are wonderful.

Bronco Billy said it all. I think the problem with any question about the greatest ever, as in so many other sports like Motorcycle Racing, Running, Boxing or Soccer, the technique and science of these sports change so dramatically with the generations that comparing between them is like chalk with cheese. All you can maybe do is point to the greatest of a particular period. I also think when talking about the greatest drivers, we tend to overlook Rally Car drivers.

Imagine, racing in the fog. Don't know how fast they would be going but I suspect still pretty close to the ragged edge for the conditions. Incredible!
By the way, I didn't find the music the least bit distracting. A matter of taste maybe?
Thank you PW for another look back at some racing legends.

I have to agree, Sir Stirling has to be the best all rounder.

Who would you choose? You can never really compare all the different drivers from all the various eras, but, as an "all rounder", Stirling Moss gets my vote. Fangio was excellent on long distance races before he came to Europe, and Mario Andretti and Tazio Nuvolari, to name just 2, were also giants. Stirling Moss chose Fangio as his best! Fangios autobiography is well worth a read. @@FraserThorburn-wr8st

    • @AmericasChoice

In sports cars, yes. In F1 cars...maybe at times. Fangio was still the maestro. See German GP 1957

    • @mikehendry34
      @mikehendry34 4 ปีที่แล้ว

yindyamarra No, he wasn’t faster, not every day. He was as fast, and that was Stirling’s own opinion. In a sports car however you are correct. In that category SM was the greatest we’ve ever seen.

No offence to Sir Stirling Moss or anyone in this video, but I believe that Mario Andretti is the best driver that ever lived. He won the F1 championship, race Le Mans type cars and won in them ; albeit, not Le Mans itself. He won in Nascar, Indy and Can-Am. Not even mentioning the racing to get to the 'big leagues'. If you go back before the modern GP era; the greatest of drivers would be TAZIO NUVOLARI.
