Why These F1 Wing Designs Were Banned

  • F1 is a tech testbed where teams have always strived to push their cars to the limits by improving their aerodynamics, often by adding new components. But sometimes, these new parts can have negative effects, are deemed dangerous, or are just downright ugly. Enter the FIA to sort things out and get it BANNED.
    In this first episode of a brand new series, "Banned", we take a look at the various banned wing tech we've seen on F1 cars. From X-Wings to midwings, to Viking horns and everything in between.

      There's formula libre, but without the big money of a big championship it's not worth spending a billion dollars a year on aero development. CanAm racing in the 70s was that kinda spirit, but the cars got so bananas they would just kill people. It can be hard to understand why a lot of aero stuff gets banned on 'safety grounds' but you've got to remember the forces involved are *massive* and if something goes dodgy mid-corner then cars end up in grandstands (see 80s ground effect). WEC is a lot more open, but only Toyota are willing to spend the money on it. I'm really looking forward to the return to ground effect in F1 now we've got the tech to do it safely. I like the lines of my racing cars sexy, not looking like a space station, but that's just me :) I do totally understand your desire for crazy tech battles though, it is one of my favourite parts of motorsport :)

    4:02 That Ferrari actually qualified for that 1982 Long Beach race with a standard wing. However, they got the green light to race with a new wing, only to be disqualified after the race by the complaint made by Ken Tyrrell, since his driver Alboretto finished 5th and he wanted one extra point for 4th place. Villeneuve was the best turbo driver on a racetrack that does not favor turbos. Such a shame that Ferrari was taking a gamble to prove a point which no one remembers anymore. Anyway, one of the classic races with Lauda's comeback, which propelled Rosberg in the chamiponship contention which he would eventually win, marred only by the disqualification of otherwise excelent Gilles Villeneuve.

      Maybe with loser regulations a small team once a century would hit on something amazing and win a championship. But ... that's not realistically going to happen, as it'd just make the big teams even more likely of finding advantages that others won't and driving even further away from the rest.
      Nostalgia is all well and good but you can't turn back to clock to times when F1 designers didn't understand aerodynamics.

    I remember a crazy system used on the 1991 or 92 Benetton which was effectively a Le Man style in car jack, that Benetton believed would enable the car to make faster get aways off the start grid when it was dropped down onto the track with the wheels spinning. It was rubbish, and didn't work, but maybe worth a mention. Anyone else remember this?

    There should be a committee which should be chaired 1/3 rd by vetted team representatives, 1/3 rd by vetted car mechanics and engineers, 1/3 rd by FIA stewards. This committee will review the appeals of FIA to ban innovations of teams. This will be a fair and swift tool for F1, also will remove the dogmatic monopoly of FIA politics in the sport which will empower team’s innovations and give them more sense if control.

    yo, they should have F1 ULTIMATE, in which they battle their brains more than their cars, let's see how thruly of a monster can a f1 get without ANY LIMITATION. i want to see 90* corners took at 300 km/h. they should be able to use fans to suck the air from the car, any kind of aero they want, any tires, just make the fastest possible f1 car, that would be even more insane than the f1 we got

    FIA: **bans "Twin Towers" over driver visibility concerns**
    Also FIA: **introduces a giant pillar smack in the middle of a driver's POV**
    I understand that why the Halo is in place, and I don't disapprove it. I just would like to know why they made a big pillar in the middle of the driver's line of sight, instead of using two pillars off to the side.

    • @eliasredlich3425
      @eliasredlich3425 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The fact that it is in the middle doesnt actually obstruct a drivers view that much because of how our brain merges the images of both eyes to see around something. For example put your thumb like 10cm away from the center of your face and look at it, you should be able to see through it.
