- We're home in New Zealand and are so excited to bring you this 4 part series on the best food in our homeland. This is our second New Zealand video and it's based in Queenstown. We hunt down Kiwi classics- a mince and cheese pie and a sausage roll, find a delicious sticky bun in Arrowtown and eat it in the Chinese Settlement plus head to Cardrona Hotel- one of New Zealand's most iconic buildings. We finish on the beach at Lake Wakatipu with a Fergburger. #queenstownfoodguide #queenstownfood #nzfoodtour
What we ate and where we ate it:
1. Mince and cheese pie and sausage roll at Fergbaker, 40 Shotover St, Queenstown 9300. Open daily 6:30am to 4:30am
2. Sticky Bun from Provisions, 65 Buckingham St, Arrowtown 9302. Open daily 8:00am to 5:00pm.
3. A pint at the Cardrona Hotel, Cardrona Valley Rd, Cardrona 9381
4. Little Lamby and Fergburger from Fergburger, 42 Shotover St, Queenstown 9300. Open 8:00am to 5:00am.
Also recommended for fine dining:
4. Amisfield Bistro and Cellar Door, 10 Arrowtown-Lake Hayes Rd, Frankton, Queenstown 9371. Open daily 12:00pm to 8:00pm.
5. Rata, Te Nuku, 43 Ballarat St, Queenstown 9348. Open daily 12:00pm to 8:00pm.

I was there in February of 2019, had a Fergburger, several pies, and some gelato at Mrs. Ferg. Loved Queenstown, and got to play some music and sing down by the lake.

We spent some time in Queenstown when we were working in NZ when our boys were babies (one’s a pie lover, the other is a sausage roll boy). We didn’t get to eat out much back then, but we loved the area, so, so beautiful. We even did a day trip to Arrowtown. Pies and sausage rolls hold the same place in an Aussie’s heart, as I’m sure you know. They are full of nostalgia and you really haven’t had the full AFL experience until you’ve bitten through the golden pastry and scolded your tastebuds with the searing hot interior. Great vid guys, as always.

Aren't they amazing! Our home is in Auckland which is about a 1.5 hour flight from Queenstown. NZ being long and thin means you don't have to go far for a very dramatic landscape change. It's very special place and heading South is always very exciting. We love it down there in all season also which is neat (great skiing in winter). Cheers, Thomas 😀

Oh yeah! I wish savory pies were more popular in the US. That pie looked great. That sausage roll though! I think my blood sugar spiked while you were eating that sticky bun too. 😄 Who doesn't love a good burger, and those burgers looked pretty spectacular. Great, yummy video.

Fergburger !! Yes We were there 2 years ago we arrived late at night and it was the best things to eat at 11pm+ haha shame it rained the whole time we were there :’( - but queenstown is so beautiful, we love heading to milford sound too

My Top Ten....So much to eat.....
1. The Big Three..... Ferge Burger, Bakery and Ice Cream....burger is great and onion rings are awesome.
Ferge Bakery Pies are fantastic.... Need to try Lamb Shank and Vension Mushroom. Pies were better several years ago, but still good. Boston bun (cream donut) Apple pie is fantastic, eclairs, brownies, cream buns, pastries.... the list goes on and on. You can eat there every day for a week and its winner after winner.
Ferge Ice Cream would match some of the best ice cream in the world. Great quality dairy and amazing variety.
2. Fogo Brazilian BBQ Great way to taste New Zealand Meat.... seasoning is heavy, but food and drinks are great
3. The Grille Best Seafood Chowder in Queenstown at $27 is great value once you see the seafood. Mains are around $45-$55 which scares people off and is never too busy, but the food is great. Vension Tabbouleh, smoked sumac yoghurt is amazing. This place gets mixed reviews based on the pricing. But the chowder is a must.
4. Walters Peak by Steamboat Colonel's Homestead Restaurant.... Amazing location. Not a buffet fan but the pork belly is off the charts.
5. Ma Boulangerie is in the Remarkables shopping complex. French bakery and patisserie.
6. Rata. Expensive but Josh Emett is a world class chef. Worked for Gordon Ramsay and is talented. Haven't eaten at his Asian inspired restaurants in Queenstown.White man woking is not my thing.
7. Pedro's Lamb. Its all takeaway!! Buy some flat bread, garlic yogurt, salad from the supermarket and take it home. Winning.
8. The Sherwood New Zealand Produce at its best
9. Neat Meat butcher... Cook at home and buy some of New Zealand's best meat. Bourbon aged Scotch Fillet to Beef ribs.
10. Raewood Supermarket. Great meat, wont have the selection of Aged Meat in Neat Meat, but I would probably prefer to buy my meat here. Seafood is good too. This place has everything you want to cook the best home cooked meal.
I've been to Botswana.... I thought it was a little overrated. The menu is huge and the execution of food is always going to be a challenge. Too much ego. For example..... Wild Boar dish has pork done in 3 ways. Belly, Rack and in shoulder was an over kill. All 3 were average, would have been better to do just one pork cut well.
That said, there are so many places to eat, was a shame this video only did 1 place from Queenstown.
Thanks for watching Andrew and thanks for the comment. So much to eat in Queenstown isn't there. This video was some of our must eats for a visitor. We'd love to cover more of the restaurants when we have more time (and lets face it more money on our next visit). We just LOVE Queenstown so much.
Re your list:
1 - yep don't the Ferge businesses just get it right - we love lots of their pies but it always had to be mince and cheese for us. It's the most classic Kiwi pie out there and one we always recommend visitors having. We don't like their other pies though.
2 - Never been - thanks for the tip. Sounds good for out of country visitors even if it's Brazilian style.
3 - Apart from Bluff oysters coming up the highway we've never had too much seafood in Queenstown. That sounds great though. We've not been to the restaurant but have had many great cocktails in the Eichardt's front bar. One of the most memorable drinks I've ever had was from there. A dark rum, orange and raisin drink while it was snowing outside. Perfect!
4 - Would love to go over there for the views. Have family that have done the boat trip and they loved it.
5 - Sounds great!
6 - Been lucky enough to eat at Rata 3 times on different visits. Love it. Such a brilliant menu and that forest backlit wall is something else to look at.
7 - Pedros is so good! We love their takeout style and the lamb is so good. It seems expensive on paper but isn't bad for a group once you see how much you get. A bottle of red to go with it and you're made.
8 - The Sherwood is well worth the small trip out of town isn't it. We ate there a week or two after they opened and sadly haven't made it back. I think we're well overdue for a visit.
9 -Sounds like a cool concept. Will have to do that next time.
10 - Sounds interesting. We've never done much cooking while in Queenstown so don't know it. Will have to check it out.
One place I'd not be able to leave off your list is Amisfield. It's a little ways out of town but not far. Such an incredible menu.

Love the look of the Cardrona Hotel! Can see why it is so well-known. Lots of history! And the great outdoor seating area, too. Always have to get the local brew!
Isn't it brilliant. We can't visit that part of the world without calling in. In winter time they sell wee paper bags of marshmallows and sticks for you can sit about the outdoor fires having a beer and toasted marshmallows. Heaven after a day skiing! Local brew all the way. 😋

I use Fennel in most of my dishes,and on pizzas,it's the one herb that makes meat sing like no other,i really miss the food back home,nothing like it,or compares.

- Ketchup on meat pies; saw many people in Sydney do that so I followed their lead. Very nice indeed but I think I prefer naked.
- I've never tried Speight's. My favorite NZ beer is an IPA from 8 Wired which is located very close to Omaha where you two collected clams. But back to Speight's. @12:30 may have been the tiniest sip of beer I have ever seen. 😂
- The lamb burger sounds so delicious. I've had plenty of lamb over the years but not minced/ground.

Defo is a great match on a meat pie. Sheena absolutely has to have t sauce on a pie. If it's a good pie I'm happy to go without though. If the option is there though I'll normally take it.
I think I've had 8 Wired beer before. If so it was a very long time ago and I can't say my memory is clear enough thinking back (I might actually be thinking of something different because I thought what I had was from Wellington). Will have to track it down next time we're in NZ. I really enjoy a Speights. It's a very simple beer, a great drinker. It is what is says on the box and it's not trying to be anything more. I really appreciate that. haha re the sip. I was hoping no one would notice. Due to the health issues I've had of late and an operation I actually wasn't meant to be drinking. I can't go past a Speights at the pub so I did drink more than that but it wasn't the most convincing sip on camera 😂 It was my first bit of alcohol in about 7 months though so there was a bit of hesitation there! Ah, my other favorite NZ beer is from the Wellington area, *_Panhead Custom Ales._* It's owned by Lion so has good distribution. Had it in Sydney as a bartender recommendation. How about that? 👍 Thanks for the explanation of the sip. I know you love a good beer so it was noticeable. Obviously hope you're on the road to full recovery.
Sounds familiar also. It's been too long since we lived in NZ to have good knowledge on the beer. Did Panhead start as an independent and then get purchased by Lion? Due to the above my beer knowledge in NZ didn't increase on this last visit sadly. Thanks for the kind words. Cheers.
I'm quite sure your suspicions are correct. Panhead is most definitely a quality craft brewery. As you know, Sydney is huge into craft beer and all the bartenders at the beer pubs I visited loathed the fact that they had to carry a few of the national Aussie big beers to appease the cheap regulars. 😂 It was entertaining. I'd ask their opinion on VB, Coopers, Tooheys, etc. just to see them frown or roll their eyes. Doubt they would import a similar NZ beer.
I remember seeing VB on tap in Queenstown about 10 years ago.....it was very confusing 😂 I've never seen anything like that before or since in NZ. Australia sure does know how to do craft beer. We had some neat micro brewery's around where we used to live it Melbourne. Brilliant to visit after a weekend bike ride 😀

Hi Thomas and Sheena another fantastic video. Oh God that pie shop was unreal. I was literally eating the mince pie and sausage roll with u both. How do u both stay so trim. The burgers looked incredible. There really is no substitute for simple food done well. Finally Sheena Im so envious of you eating burgers and pies and your lippy never moves and is on point always lol.

It is chilly over winter May to October the summer can be very hot depends on wether you want to ski or not
You’ll have to get down there on your next visit guys! It’s truly spectacular- takes our breath away every time we visit. Good one! We really enjoy the fine dining in Queenstown but it sure is hard to go past a pie or burger on the beach. What burger did you get? Yeah 30 minutes wasn't bad at all. We love how speedy they are even though the lines are huge. Thanks for watching this one! Cheers, Thomas 😀
@@ChasingaPlate The Fergburger Deluxe! I figured I would try the classic. It's everything they say it is, and then some. I had a pie with pork belly and several flavors of gelato. Yes, I ate at other places too.
Good work with the deluxe! I was reading that on the menu when we were in line and drooling. I've never had that one there. Next time. That pie sounds amazing. Isn't their gelato great also! We had that a number of times while there 😂😋

I don't know where he spent time in New Zealand, just that he loved the country and thought it was beautiful. He loved the mountains! He also met a girl there, we have a picture of her. He never went back though. I love your videos!

That line at Ferg’s looked like no joke, but 30 minutes isn’t bad at all. And you get to eat them with that view!
The line is always crazy. I've never seen it without some sort of large line. But yes they really know how to keep it moving. It's a great experience and sure is worth walking down to the beach if you're eating them during the daylight hours. A must do whenever we're in Queenstown 😀 - Thomas

Mmm.. I don't usually see pies with such buttery and crumbly pastry.. reminds me of the crust of those pineapple buns or the pastry of particular type of chicken pie sold in Singapore. What a great find. It looks so good... I for one can't eat a pie with tomato sauce though cuz it would cover up the taste of the filling 😄
Such great pastry A O. Bit more moist than what you’d find with those dishes from Singapore. Sheena can’t go past the sauce when it comes to pies. So as you know I have been begging you guys to do the NZ videos. I'm way over the moon at how good they are coming out. NZ is a hard sell to Americans because of travel time and they all think they want to go to Australia instead. I'm working changing that one person at a time, so this content is perfect for that.
