I've met and talked to this man and as a fellow surgeon was impressed by his integrity and courage. I myself have been kidnapped and tortured twice during my medical missions.
This series is so good. It also makes a great argument for humanity and rehabilitation. A lot of these people have a story, it's not so black-or-white where people are "just evil".

It’s so unique to hear it from someone who actually lived it and to hear it from his perspective. Quite like he said, I believe there’s always two sides to the story. I’m glad that he was able to have a change of heart and live the remainder of his life with a different viewpoint. That takes a lot of courage.
It's easy for us growing up relatively safe here in the USA to say we wouldn't buy into the radical Islam beliefs. But I think if we grew up with this sort of violence all around us. If we had, we would want to do something about it. I can see how easy it would be to fall into a group who have a misguided agenda.

At our core, we are all the same - we all just want to live our lives in peace, in a safe environment, with our basic needs met. I'm a Brit and, for as long as I can remember, Brits and Russians are supposed to have been enemies. But everyone I know was utterly horrified by the Beslan atrocity. Our hearts went out to you and we united with you in grief, horror, and outrage. There was no "us & them", just a global "us" mourning catastrophic and unnecessary loss. This is a real man. A man that can look back and inward and say, "I was wrong. Here's why. Here's what we should be doing." And impart that knowledge onto people across the world. The violence may seem very tempting because it can potentially achieve results much quicker than through diplomacy, but most of the time it doesn't actually result in the outcome you originally wanted and the people that suffer the most are the ones you are supposedly fighting for.

Really enjoyed this, there’s so much under the surface when it comes to the other side and what could spur people to go down a violent path. I remember being on deployment back in 2017 and seeing the destruction that all that fighting did to the communities there and I could definitely see a young person being angered by that which unfortunately could make them susceptible to influence. I’m glad he got out and is using his experience to make the world a little better. 🙏🏾
You know what should be one of the takeaways from this interview? Just coz you are giving asylum to someone who came to you in distress from their home country doesn't mean they will be loyal to you and your country and will add value and be a good citizen. They can still turn up to be a jihadist like this guy.

I really appreciate how this person turned his life around, but the way he brushed off the atrocities of the Bangladesh war (that was technically a genocide) as ‘conflict on both sides, nobody is to be blamed’ was very callous. It was an ethnic genocide deliberately perpetrated by the Pakistani army against the civilians of Bangladesh, killing or uprooting thousands of people (especially non-Muslims like my family) as a result. And it is something they’ve never apologised for or even acknowledged. Let’s not just let it slide as if it was no biggie.

This was such a moving and impressive interview. I admire the courage and the internal integrity of this person. It is not at all easy to admit what he admits and to work on fixing it every single day, and helping other young people. Really impressive!
It’s so unique to hear it from someone who actually lived it and to hear it from his perspective. Quite like he said, I believe there’s always two sides to the story. I’m glad that he was able to have a change of heart and live the remainder of his life with a different viewpoint. That takes a lot of courage.
It's easy for us growing up relatively safe here in the USA to say we wouldn't buy into the radical Islam beliefs. But I think if we grew up with this sort of violence all around us. If we had, we would want to do something about it. I can see how easy it would be to fall into a group who have a misguided agenda.
You could argue Americans do fall into groups with misguided agenda despite the relative safety. Politics, cults, social justice, and others are rife with stuff like this. Perhaps less violent, but violent nonetheless. Like the Capital Riot, BLM and ANTIFA riots, gang violence, and so on

After all, bullets flying must by necessity be part of the divine plan, otherwise how could it have even happened when I pulled the lever on this machine? Huh? Riddle me that. This is a really insightful interview, it has certainly exposed me to a perspective and world-view that I hadn't even considered. This man is very intelligent and very empathetic and it's incredible how he has used those experiences to better himself and those around him
Can't imagine what its like living in war-torn country, seeing your brother die, teaching awareness for 20 years without pay for it to mainly fall on deaf ears. Glad he saw the truth too many young ppl choose violence (of course a lot are forced). Hope he is at peace and more ppl can be like him 🙏

Wouaw- he's gone through a lot since childhood. No wonder why he was a vulnerable target to enroll. Well done to him for finding the truth and inner peace.
Alot of people are doubting his sincerity and are nitpicking what he has to say without actually listening to his overall message. He nvr tried to excuse the things he did and he is just explaining the reality of how he came to be radicalized and the reason why he moved away from it was because of the senseless violence against Muslims and non Muslims that he had to be a part of and to witness. Ultimately his is a sad story of disillusionment and its exploitation and regret.

Whilst the elite pick and choose who our "enemies" are, most normal people don't care for the politics. At our core, we are all the same - we all just want to live our lives in peace, in a safe environment, with our basic needs met.
I'm a Brit and, for as long as I can remember, Brits and Russians are supposed to have been enemies. But everyone I know was utterly horrified by the Beslan atrocity. Our hearts went out to you and we united with you in grief, horror, and outrage. There was no "us & them", just a global "us" mourning catastrophic and unnecessary loss.
Regardless of the press, the propaganda, or whichever power-hungry egomaniac is in charge of either country, when it comes to the average citizen, more unites us than divides us.
And when it comes to the heartbreaking events at Beslan, many of us around the world stand with you 💕

For all the ignorants, he is not a terrorist like you think he is. He is from the Mujahedeen that have fought the Soviets with the big support of the Western countries (especially USA and UK). Its all relative, to the USSR mujahideen were terrorist to the west they were freedom fighters and now taliban is perceived as terrorists while some in Afghanistan see them as freedom fighters

@@thamsanqakhoza7032 it's all very politicized and blurry, but terrorist generally refers to non-state actors which focus on civilian targets and public infrastructure in order to achieve their strategic means.
The only branch of the mujahedeen which you could make a proper case for being a terrorist organization was the Hezb-e Islami Gulbuddin due to their extensive attacks unto civilian targets during the Afghan Civil War and their relations with al-Qaeda.

There's a difference between accepting and practising. And if feminism is another term for gender equality, then yes Islam both accepts and practises that.
This is a real man. A man that can look back and inward and say, "I was wrong. Here's why. Here's what we should be doing." And impart that knowledge onto people across the world. The violence may seem very tempting because it can potentially achieve results much quicker than through diplomacy, but most of the time it doesn't actually result in the outcome you originally wanted and the people that suffer the most are the ones you are supposedly fighting for.

Really enjoyed this, there’s so much under the surface when it comes to the other side and what could spur people to go down a violent path. I remember being on deployment back in 2017 and seeing the destruction that all that fighting did to the communities there and I could definitely see a young person being angered by that which unfortunately could make them susceptible to influence. I’m glad he got out and is using his experience to make the world a little better. 🙏🏾
You know what should be one of the takeaways from this interview? Just coz you are giving asylum to someone who came to you in distress from their home country doesn't mean they will be loyal to you and your country and will add value and be a good citizen. They can still turn up to be a jihadist like this guy.

My Dad worked in Afghanistan & Iraq for about 6-7 years & the locals don't want war & terror.
The locals are true Muslims & its not in their religion to murder. They want peace & to live their life. Its the extremists that have a different view.

I really appreciate how this person turned his life around, but the way he brushed off the atrocities of the Bangladesh war (that was technically a genocide) as ‘conflict on both sides, nobody is to be blamed’ was very callous.
It was an ethnic genocide deliberately perpetrated by the Pakistani army against the civilians of Bangladesh, killing or uprooting thousands of people (especially non-Muslims like my family) as a result. And it is something they’ve never apologised for or even acknowledged.
Let’s not just let it slide as if it was no biggie.

I think part of why he had that revelation in as he said his last mission in Burma is because he witnessed the similar things happening to his own people, his family nonetheless back in 1971. you can clearly see what a grave effect it had on him by the way he instantly teared up.
