Saving a family heirloom like your granddad's vise is rewarding and worth the effort. Kudos on a great job.

I'm kinda' surprised a "made in China" vise was early enough for your grandpa. I thought China's emergence as a major manufacturer/exporter was quite recent-ish.

@@TheWillToMake I'm always happy to learn - and I learnt something. Thank you. I now know MORE about vises!
I learnt a lot from the vise obsessed guys over at garagejournal.

You forgot to put grease on critical components of that nice vice, like the screw rod and sliding tube threads.

It had such beautiful and original patina. Why?

Kind of curious why you chose to leave the other part of the vise still assembled? Based on the amount of crud you cleaned out I'd imagine there's plenty in the sleeve assembly that the jaw slides in and out of, you realise this vise will rotate so the pipe jaws are at the top or 90° or wherever you need them? There's normally another set of jaws for gripping square stock on the underside of the pipe jaws aswell.

Yes I understand that, I attempted to take that apart but would not budge with anything I tried. And since I don't plan on using that side anyways I just left it.

Really? I mean really? You really felt the need to write that as a comment? I think, given the scope of the project, he did a pretty damned nice job.
