China claims breakthrough in analog semiconductor chips: 3,000 times faster than Nvidia

  • Scientists at Tsinghua University have developed a new chip which they claim is 3,000 times faster than Nvidia's A100 chip. By harnessing light signals and photons, instead of electricity, their chip is a quantum leap beyond in terms of efficiency.
The chip is analog, so will not be used hardware systems that require versatility and simultaneous functionality. It is ideal, however, for large markets such as wearables, image recognition, smart factories, and driver-assisted technologies.

YES WHEN CHINA IS NO 1 IN WORLD CHIP MANUFACTURING, (2030?) IT WILL BE NO 1 PERIOD. In fact, I think Biden's tariffs were an implicit acknowledgement that China is already No 1 econ 50% larger in PPP (wh is v real measurement - as Kevin's vids show US prices massively inflated compared with CHina's). The US has been petending for the last 15 years that it hasn't lost. By 2030 its no 2 status will be undeniable. [Comments?] I wonder also whether the Taiwan prob. might be solved if China is No 1 in chips. The Taiwanese might have no choice but to join CHina to save their chip-dependent econ.

The US should be able to make these chips with some research and the paper. But at 100nm, the US can't produce these cheaper than China. So China will end up with the world market while the US bans these chips from the US and maybe the EU market. And the US will have the US and the EU market.

This is called a Photonic chip, the idea has been around a long time but no country has successfully created one that works the way it needed to be. Not a surprise that China can make one and mass produce it. If this is true then forget the current digital chip in computers and smartphones because the photonic chip is faster, uses less energy and has less heat, and maybe much easier to make. If China has made this technology into a real product and runs better than the current best chips on the market then this is another serious blow to USA.

What the West doesn't understand is that chips per say don't matter as much as over computational power. The sheer amount of computers, high end programming talent, hardware development talents and most importantly governmental support without interference in both theoretical and applied research. The scale of the effort is truly hard to believe.

If they truly achieved this leap forward in CPU architecture, it means they will lead from now on, we studied this in CPU architecture in college back in the 90's (NOT a USA college though)... in a country most considers a third world-country. Basically light does not suffer from solar magnetic storms thus reduces blips in floating point errors, hence much less error prone computing. Less metals used too, less cooling, smaller fans...

For example 500 op amp components that can be combined to perform complex analog math (multipliers, integration, sums, etc) with hundreds of source input signals to be processed as a web

Nvidia A100 chip is not a multi-functional CPU。 The Nvidia A100 chip is GPU based
Therefore, if you want to claim that the Chinese ACCEL chip is not multi-functional, you should equally note that Nvidia's A100 chip doesn't have multi-functional capability as well
Furthermore, an Analog computer has a unique capability that the digital chips don't have --- instead of a simple "on" "off" (0 or 1) like their digital counterparts, the Analog circuit can perform "Yes" / "No" and, this is the most important part, *_"Perhaps" / "Maybe"_*
In conclusion, digital circuits can only perform "either/or" while the Analog circuits are capable of probing the *_"what if"_* scenarios
It's an entire different playing field altogether !

This was actually one of the 3 overt strategies that was in the public view in mid 2023.
The others included the 7nm chip which they got into manufacturing about 4 months after announcing they could do it in the lab (and now rumored 5nm mass production) and the fully local quantum processor of which they now have Origin Wukong as well as Jiuzhang and possible acceleration of larger scales qubit development from the new Xiaohong chips.
The photonic chip was actually more on the fringe especially after 7nm got built and Jiuzhang 2.0 was announced. At this rate, the photonic chip could overtake quantum processors in development even as the normal processors hit the 1nm barrier (TSMC is projected to start 2nm production with poor starting yields at the end of the year).
The performance dividends from TSMC's labs 1.6nm and 1.4nm are simply going to get smaller so the photonic chip is the future

I cant figure out how to search for it but there was some research a while back where they fabricated a lens that could respond to shapes by blurring them. They showed numbers and it would blur just one of them. I thought it was pretty wild such a thing was possible with just a transparent material. No electronics, nothing. A more advanced version could recognize more complicated objects.
The new optical chip here is specifically good at vision data but in the context of the above it seems only the tip of the iceberg. I imagine their chip to be able to do mind blowing things inside [security] cameras. Stuff that would normally require a big data center. As long as the data is kept visual crazy feature extraction operations are possible.
You go from a black blob to detecting the shape of an eye then look for a second eye or an ear at a distance of 1-2 the size of the eye. Is it also a head etc? Then when enough of those things have been confirmed you can begin filtering down to a specific person. If resources are not an issue all checks can be done simultaneously.
Say you have a fuzzy picture of a stadion full of people and a database with 100 million faces. If the visual is crappy enough you might not be able to identify anyone but for each face you can exclude many millions of matches. Each frame of the video could produce a slightly different result. If you have data on who purchased tickets the database is much smaller, each face appears only once. Sort the best 100 partial matches by how well they match zoom in a little bit and you can quickly figure out where Waldo is from a bunch of seemingly garbage data.
You could have it look at products on a conveyor belt and have them return a bunch of not necessarily meaningful but homogeneous data until a product comes along that looks slightly different and produces a very different result. You would know something is strange about it, check it and possibly add it to the acceptable responses. Eventually you would know what regular defects look like and get a better error message.
You could have it look at anything and extract abnormalities with truly insane efficiency. It could be just the thing needed to perfect the Chinese mega scale projects where one mistake or one oversight could potentially ruin everything.

Technology like this takes at least several years from labs to the market if the technologies are proven really useful and the surrounding support tools, algorithms, and theories to be developed may take decades. So it is a bit too early to say whether it is good or not. One thing I learned about Tsinghua is: that they use a lot of educational resources but the most great contribution they made is to transfer smart ppl to Wall St.
