2020 LNU Fire Northern California, my parents’ ranch was in the crosshairs of that massive fire. Fire came through in the middle of the night, and we were completely on our own. Fortunately, we were prepared. We maintained a defensible space around the property throughout the year, kept flammable objects, plants, and weeds away from the barns and houses, pre-located our hoses and sprinklers in vulnerable spots, kept our well running with a generator knowing the power was going to be shut off, and we had an old fire truck with a water tank and pump. We were told to evacuate over the phone but we were comfortable with everything we’ve done to protect our home. And we did, nothing was lost. Most of our neighbors lost everything from their home, barns, animals, cars etc. Preparation is everything and you can’t rely on anyone else but yourself.
No shame in your royal academy training. I’ve got a couple thespians who live down the road. They drive a Subaru, wear lots of flannel, pretty solid dudes.
It’s mount St Hellen’s I’m pretty sure lmfao. He says Mount Fuji because people always comment saying that, which is kinda obscure considering where mount Fuji is located. Unless you already knew this and I’m dying your joke.
This is one of the most hilarious episodes of the channel. Came here years ago for some great Benchmade 940 info...stayed for the spirit, knowledge, wisdom, and humor.
That's a great little system. I did similar when we had the fire near my house (fireline got within 300 yards); I put standard tripod sprinklers on the roof with the feet in the gutters and had the roof, gutters (which had dry vegetation in them), wood porches/decks, and about 20 feet around the house soaked. After that, I ended up picking up some sprinkler heads with zinc spikes that had integrated pass-through connections so I can make an around-the-house line if I want. They were super cheap at Wally-World.
east coast man - Move the Y to the base of the sprinkler head and you have a pass through head. the valves on the Y allow you to tune pressure (throw distance) for each head.
Canadian Rocky Mountain Man would put those sprinklers at the peaks on the fascia of each gable end. Leave the sprinkler to go all the way around, then it only has to reach half of the distance of the roof and the water will rain down from the roof, surrounding the building with a shower of water, and increasing the humidity around the building.
Those sprayer heads are a cool idea, but they're meant to be mounted vertically. Your angled fascia prevents them from rotating 360 degrees. That's why they kept spraying you in the face. If you put a small block on the fascia with an angle cut on it so that you get a vertical surface for the sprinkler head then the head can rotate as intended. That way you could run the sprinkler in 360 degrees and protect the ground near the house as well as the roof.
You should talk some about the firewise landscaping that has been showing up recently. It usually boils down to nice gravel or stone paths and for people who want ornamental plants, ornamental plants that don't burn well and spread slowly. Having a nice garden can save your house along with all sprayers and keeping watch.
The sprinklers from Alpine are a great looking system. There is another sprinkler system from WASP. One thing you can do is to loop the water supply to equal the supply to all the sprinklers.
In Oklahoma we used to use sprinklers on the roof to cool our homes in the afternoons with the benefit of this being available for prairie/grass fires.
As an East Coast man, if I had a semi remote cabin and it was that close to a flowing irrigation ditch, I would probably bury a section of 36 inch concrete pipe for a bit of a reservoir in case I ever ran into a situation where I needed to run a pump
I don’t live in fire country. I’ve installed lawn irrigation though. If this was a real concern for me I would plumb in simple irrigation system, I can put pop up heads any where I want. I could even plumb a 1/2 inch line up to the roof and have heads up there as well. Boom, fire protection water system that can be turned on by my phone/ manually at the controller. It can also be supplied by a pump
Hi Cody, I really enjoy your video's! We love seeing sweet loaf and your wife and Jack! Wish you would show more of them. I realize you often Joke about East Coast men, I know some folks do not see the humor in that, but a lot of folks take offense if you ever Mention the fact that IF not for the East Coast men the West Coast men would have never been! I guess that is one for the road...
I didt know you studied in Glasgow. love your content right up my street. FYI, electrician to trade but been a firefighter in scotland/ Glasgow for last 21years. Gone yursel fa the Glasgow proposed family. much lovem God bless Tony
I, fortunately, have gravity fed water ... it's higher pressure than the house well water that is pumped. The irrigation water is primary water ... comes from a spring and free of debris so no filter needed. I did get 5 sprinklers that are flow through and have quick connectors now I need some of that 'toy' hose. Thank you for your insight into the prevention of fire destroying property. Yesterday a forrest fire happened just down the Columbia valley BC from here ... not threaten us but it rained this morning so everything is covered in soot -- I'm hosing the foliage in the garden now thinking the plants won't be able to photosynthesis if they're covered in soot.
little pump with the little gas tank cracked me up. - I have a two inch pump by the river with a large enough fuel tank feeding the Honda engine to run about 8-10 hours. One sprinkler on the each end of the house at the peaks, one on the detached garage & the ability to add three more hose line & run a 1 1/2 fire hose. No need to get on the roof, can make all connections at ground level. Hope it is never needed.
Lol, Wranglerstar I love your barefooted lifestyle, we just can't do that here in SW Texas, well unless you want bloody nubs on the end of your legs! 😂
Cody, I think if you mounted one sprinkler at the peak on each gable end and they rotated 360 degrees constantly you would have coverage over the cabin and beyond covering the immediate ground surrounding. Just a thought, plus I did enjoy you taking a soaking so a do over wouldn't be the worst for another video ha. God Bless from Scotland.
Looks like a great product! Could you put a t piece before it to act as a pass through? A similar system saved a friend's property from burning down in the 2007 bushfires. The metal water tank next to the house that fed the pump melted down the water level but it saved the house.
An ecoflow delta (any model delta series) with panels and electric 120v well pump are also a good option, at least the larger portable units (not river series, etc). I already have several set up in various places to water crops so we don't have to run electrical all over 5 acres. Also great to set up in the back of a side by side with a tank to get to anywhere.
Your summer ProHo challenges are polar opposite from Eastern NC ProHo challenges as we’ve had daily thunderstorms for the last week and 10” of rain here in the last 5 days. And we’re starting to expect some tropical developments in the Atlantic. Not to mention the 95° heat with 90% humidity 😓 with little to no breeze. Makes you wonder which way you’d rather have it lol!!

It’s fuji mtn. And yes there is a Fuji mtn in Oregon not to be confused with Mt Fuji in Japan
