      It may be more simple than all the complex math. The center of and of 1 and 5 is 3 on an integer line if you start at 1 and 5 and count one space together towards each number. One is God, 5 is man. God and Man coming together is 3. Three is the heavenly or divine number. Jesus is God and Man. The net contains the symbolism and metaphors of the Word. The Word is Jesus - 153.

    Irenaeus Florinus I can even describe the place where the blessed Polycarp used to sit and discourse - his going out, too, and his coming in - his general mode of life and personal appearance, together with the discourses which he delivered to the people; also how he would speak of his familiar intercourse with John, and with the rest of those who had seen the Lord; and how he would call their words to remembrance. Whatsoever things he had heard from them respecting the Lord, both with regard to His miracles and His teaching, Polycarp having thus received [information] from the eye-witnesses of the Word of life, would recount them all in harmony with the Scriptures.

    • @nightoftheworld
      @nightoftheworld 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@varo09111991 thanks for the thoughts-numerology is a highly polysemous thing for sure. I looked into the Ancient Greek numbering system: 153 = εκατόν πενήντα τρία (ekatón penínda tría) [one hundred fifty three] {100-50-3}
      I think you may be right that originally they wouldn’t have had the same experience of the Arabic number breaking down - 1 - 5 - 3 would be: ένα - πέντε - τρία (éna - pénde - tría)
      But I still want to say that Greeks could have seen 153 as separate fragments, however maybe it’s my indoctrination in the Arabic numbering system taking over-as (éna - pénde - tría) only partially overlaps (ekatón penínda tría) it seems..
      What would be interesting to know is if éna is connected to ekatón in counting like pénde/penínda seem to be-even though they are different words with no overlapping number symbol, I can still say “fifty-three” and know that at base it’s “five sets of ten and three”. I wonder if any Ancient Greek readers would have been able to discern 1-5-3 distinctly in this way from reverse engineering their counting names. Maybe there is no actual equivalent in their system, but some of these Ancient Greek counting names seem to be derivative to degrees.

    Can't say I didn't find this lecture interesting. Even so, I find this reducing the Gospels to "number magic" to be very superficial and missing the entire messages of the stories. There have been many Hebrew scholars who have done the same with the Talmud and Pentateuch. It's like turning the scriptures into a kind of soduku puzzle where you can only unlock the message with fancy feats of numerology.
    The Bible and the Gospels are so much more than that. Perhaps, Dr. Sugrue prefers numerology over facing the ideas of the Bible head on.

      Hi Glenn. An unfortunate use of words - "number magic" but appreciate the sentiment by Prof. Sugrue. I suppose it demonstrates that there is nothing wasted or casual about the text in the Bible; it all seems very strategic and defies (in my mind) the notion that individuals on their own could write anything so inspired and consistent regarding "number magic".😊

    5 is in the two digit position, man and society
    Finally, 3 being in the 1 digit position would invert the 3 digit dual symbol of Heavenly and Godly as Godly and Heavenly
    So, man and society is in some way a Heavenly sandwich, Heaven being the connection between the mundane and divine?

    John is the 43rd book in the Bible, which numerically might represent harmony between Heaven and Earth, and completion of divine work, where 40 represents completion and 3 represents divinity.
    Also worth noting is that according to Big Bang Theory, there was a brief period of time immediately after the beginning of space time called the Planck constant which is 10 ^ -43, when the Universe was so excessive in temperature that there weren’t even atoms. John opens with, “In the beginning” and the Planck constant refers to the beginning of the material world.

    I have listened to biblical scholars who claim that what the "end of this sinful world" meant to the people of the time was an end to the current evil political system under which so many suffered, i.e. Rome. They did not mean a literal end of life on Earth. Personally, the expectation of the end of the world was always HUGELY problematic for me. If someone has promised to come back for you, and more than two thousand years later they person still had not come for you, then I think it is time to admit no one is coming back for you.
    As one biblical scholar I have heard said, it is not so much we who are placing the demands on God but God who is placing the command on us to change our world and live according to Jesus's teaching. Now, I do believe the literal end of the world may very well happen, but it will be humanity's collective suicide by way of what we are doing to the planet and all life on it.

    So I'm gonna be that guy. After all that explanation of symbolic numerology, what does 153 represent? If we take them in order it goes: God, man, trinity. Maybe signifying that the covenant between God and man is intrinsically holy. Or, for a little more abstract, if we add the numbers together we get 9. Nine is perfectly divisible by 3. And not only that but technically it's 333, so is this symbolic of the last miracle being the most holy? The end all be all miracle of the most perfect person that has eternal life? I know he said we didn't have enough time but after him explaining the numbers outright I was hoping for his direct translation. Unless I'm missing something. Am I stupid?

      @@dr.michaelsugrue CLIII. What is the significance of translating to roman if the bible was written in Greek? Or was John not written in Greek? I honestly don't know. By writing in roman are we alluding to the centurion in some way? How do letters and fish connect? Or Romans and miracles? If there's any imagery associated with the numerals I'm ignorant to any reference of any kind. Then I ask if 153 is important to Greek culture but that doesn't matter since you specified roman. And my mind goes to the writers talking in code and metaphor (three headed beast referencing the three hills) so the Romans couldn't decipher what they were trying to teach so I'm honestly at a loss. I think I'm missing some cultural perspective because I've been at this for a long time and even consulted other Christians. No one knows, and even then, Google (as my last resort) gives back mixed results. But I'm not worried about that. My concern is attempting to interpret correctly and I don't know how else to approach this.

    153 - my interpretation. The '5' is sandwiched between the two pillars of God (1) and the Trinity (3). 'Our essence is God (1). However, as 5' represents original sin and human imperfection, then in order to achieve perfection and freedom from sin, we need to be transformed by the baptism of the Holy Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Ghost). Hence, people will do the sign of the cross to demonstrate that they consciously acknowledge and brand themselves as disciples of Christ - in the same way babies/children are baptised with the sign of the cross (Trinity). The three elements of the Holy Trinity are distinct but not separate, emanating from the essence of God. God is the source. 153 appears AFTER the resurrection of Jesus to further reinforce that redemption occurs through undertaking that transformational process via the Trinity - otherwise we can decide to stay stuck at being '5', imperfect and sinful. Jesus suffered 5 wounds, again demonstrating the sins wrought on Him by man.

    I think he should have mentioned Philo's treatment of the number six. Certainly Revelation treats six as evil but I'm not convinced the whole Bible does that and I suspect some of the authors of the new testament had read Philo.
    Also the analogy to Bach doesn't work well. Bach's music does of course always end on a consonant chord but it doesn't have clearly established zones of "tension" that require some sort of explicit "resolution"; this terminology is generally applied to sonata form (such as by Charles Rosen), the dominant form of most of the composers following Bach until the 20th century.

    This is great and love the explanation of the final sign but I mean... 153 = infinity is nice but... why not any other number? How about this idea: 153 is the order of God's manifestations to humanity... 1= God's number / God the father; 5 = Human number / God the man 3 = Spiritual realm / God the spirit... first there was Yahweh leading the Israelites, then he sent Jesus, then Jesus was sacrificed & resurrected giving us access to the Spirit. Still fits with the rest of the analysis... God is infinite, yes, but also, God & His various manifestations / means of providing for us is enough "spiritual food" to feed all of humanity.

      Don't be any denser than you need to. No, I was not on meth or cocaine or Adderall or any other narcotics (legal or illegal) and the question implies a weak misunderstanding of what I do. Read Chuang Tzu's parable about the Emperor and the Cook. When I am teaching I am thinking out loud, being myself, only moreso. Simultaneously, all my lectures are all extemporaneous. They require that I empty myself to focus and become transparent. Only getting into "the zone" via an extended period of silence and reflection before lecturing allows me to be myself only less so. The goal is to become a human superconductor of the Holy Spirit, all flow, no impedance.

    The Professor's deep respect for this non-synoptic Gospel- I greatly esteem. However, devoting the entire lecture to "number magic" and hidden meanings was sad for me. For this most poetic gospel that contains far too many "classic" lines, including "For God so loved the world"( those words are only in This gospel) and the Great chapter 17, consisting entirely of Jesus' personal prayer to God..I happen to dislike "You can only understand the hidden meanings with higher education"--this time in the Bible, but I believe we've scared several generations in the US away from poetry, because too.many think, in order to "get" the poem, they have to "decode it." This is a LONG way from the average Athenian of the 5th Century BC being able to easily quote Sophocles. It is impossible to explain beauty using logic

    153 great fish is to teach the Greeks (and everyone else) who seeks wisdom that Jesus contains the fullness of human wisdom. Archimedes' value of pi consists the number 153 many times. However, Jesus had already cooked some fish when they had caught the 153 fishes. it is to show Jesus' wisdom is even beyond the human wisdom. :) In this time of pandemic, we really need this wisdom of Jesus because the variant of the Covid is changing faster than the vaccines we can develop.
    To add: 1John2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
    It's the three major temptation in the world and Jesus was tempted of this triad.

    Gods statement to Moses, "I am" means "I am all things" as opposed to Jesus's "I am" statements that are quite focused, specific and directly related to a pathway aka the way, the truth and the life. And so it seems to me that Jesus is a life guide who leads us to become more 'I am' in this life.
    Jesus's message seems to be that we focus on specific things in order to transform ourselves into those worthy of the kingdom of God in the afterlife but more practically speaking to transform ourselves into more 'godlike' beings.
    As Jesus is quoted in the bible, "You shall do all this and more".
    Is this not a reference to becoming godlike especially since Jesus himself is seen, in many respects, as a god?
    And if we are capable of doing more than Jesus himself then havent we advanced into a godlike state?
    This line of reasoning contains no elements of blasphemy for if we analyze the concept of human souls evolving into the ranks of "I am" then this can only mean that we are 100% in harmony with God and not capable of placing ourselves above God in any way since doing so would be in conflict and in contradiction to being in the state of 'I am'. You would literally become something else and no longer be godlike.
