Dude, you make a huge mistake, Final Fantasy Adventure is not a Final Fantasy, is actually a Mana game called Mystic Quest. For some reason the game was called Final Fantasy Adventure in the USA while it was called Mystic Quest in Europe. Its original name is Seiken Densetsu. The mistake is understable but still you should check out more before doing a recommendation video. That´s all. Have a nice day!
_Kingdom Hearts_ was what made me go back and give the _Final Fantasy_ series (and turn based RPGs in general) a chance. I don't know what RPG turned me off of the genre, but one of them left me with such a bad impression that I swore them all off.
@@charless1145 Sure, but it's ostensibly more approachable that many of the _FF_ entries. Turn based RPGs often don't look particularly fun and even if you are a fan, looks still don't tell you much.
I grew up in the Philippines where Asian fairy tales and mythologies are common. When I first played FFV, I felt like I was on an Asian fairytale, I was mesmerized. I still think it’s one of the best in the series, it’s a shame few people agree.
Havent played ffv. But the fact that it has a ffv 4 job fiesta every year shows that it has a cult following. Not every ff game gets the same treatment from its players. I will definetely play it after I finish ffvi
My starting point was techinically KH1 and 2, but Crisis Core and Dissidia was where I really started. Then I dove in with FFXIII Zack has my heart forever.
Astraldymensions You’re an oddball to me. Crisis Core is great, Dissidia, while good, I thought only appealed to FF fans. Tell me, what’re you’re thoughts on other FFs?
@@AkaiAzul Well Dissidia is just awesome to me. You get this diverse cast of characters duking it out with explosions everwhere with a cool RPG system built into it. It's got great casual appeal for an arena fighter. I spent like 120 hours in the og Dissidia. My thoughts on the other FFs are as follows 1. FFVII and FFIX are damn near perfect 2. FFX is great but feels very linear in terms of leveling on the normal Spehere Grid 3. FFXV is pretty good but it misses a lot of marks 4. FFXIII has great concpets and characters executed poorly due to an unclear lore (that isnt explained until the sequels). But end game gameplay is really really fun 5. FFVIII and FFIII I'm not very fond of. I think FFIII has a lot of heart but I'm not crazy about it. FFVIII... did not appeal to me in story or gameplay. But I like the world. Currently playing through FFXII and FFXIV
Astraldymensions Yeah, FF8 is great, but then everything after Disc 1 (after the failed assassination attempt) is terrible. I’m curious how you’ll react to 4-6.
FFX is the best place to start. It is incredibly accessible and delivers the standard FF experience. If you like it go on to IX, VII, VI, and IV (in any order). Then go on to the others.
And the best versions of each of them are: 10: HD Remaster (switch, ps4, xbone, ps3, pc, I think vita) 9: Remaster (switch, ps4, xbone, pc) 7: Remaster (switch, ps4, xbone, pc) 6: translation fixed patch for snes 4: PSP or the 3D version (if you want an easier ride, go for PSP, and the 3D version is more challenging.)
Uhhhhhhhhhh, what? FFX doesn't deliver the "standard FF experience". Like, in any way. It was criticized at the time, and still is, for changing the formula DRASTICALLY. Namely, it was a super linear hallway simulator with a heavy emphasis on cutscenes and barely any sidequests. Maybe you meant IX? That's a good one to start with if you want the standard FF experience, at least as far as the 3D games go. For the classic formula, go with I or IV.
@@bluster9669 I think by standard they meant without the more open bells and whistles of other games, making it more simple to sit down and power through the story without being concerned about where to go and what to do until late game. It's totally accessible if flawed due to it's lack of freedom early on and it's late game openess. Similarly, that same lack of early freedom is why fans either adore or feel middlingly to it! That's arguably why so many cite it as their favourite or least favourite 3D FF. But for me I agree with you on IX being the best place to start! Pretty straightforward and with a mild difficulty curve alongside a easy to understand battle system, although X is my all time favourite.
"Don't start with VI, it'll make all the earliers games suck by comparison." Yeah, can confirm. Started with VI, can barely play the earlier ones. VI spoiled me.
I started with IV and VI back to back. I love them both, but VI by a large margin more. And then I had to go collect nearly every JRPG I could find...surprisingly the SNES era is such a great era for the genre, but yeah nothing compared to VI for me. Yes, including Crono and his Trigger. Hell, I like them all. FFIII probably least though. FFII is underrated = b
IV is the best starting point to this day IMO. Every character has a "role," and a purpose. Story is pretty good. In the later games, you can pretty much make anyone anything, everybody can use magic, etc. I enjoyed IV because not everybody can be OP badasses like my girl Rydia.
FreshBeats I wasn't counting 7 because I don't think "Popeye arms" is a good starting point for newbies. I think IV is because it's basically the first real refinement of the series into both good game play and a good plot. It establishes the tropes and such the rest of the series relies on. If you start with 7, you miss out on a lot of references that are already established and such.
"Don't start with X-2 it's a sequel." Young me is sweating profusely right now (Okay to be fair I didn't understand that the -2 was a sequel numbering and just liked the pretty ladies as well as thinking it was FF12 I was a dumb child).
if you dont like 8, 11, or 3 you won't like the rest but because all dq games are essentially the same at their core imo i wouldnt say it matters which of those three you start with.
FFIX is my first Final Fantasy... and my absolute favorite game... ever It will always be perfect, replaying it time and time again just cements how much it means to me. Incredible characters, beautiful atmosphere, great plot, a villain you love to hate and empathize with at the end, an open ended ending that caps off the characters struggles while leaving room to continue, and easily the best soundtrack in a game ever (battle 1 is so hype, boss theme makes you know your in danger, Over Those Hills is relaxing and perfect for getting in the mood to explore, Kuja’s theme is the best villain theme ever made in a game, and You’re not Alone tears your heart out just to name a few). Yes it’s a bit slow for a game if battle was sped up a bit between waits it would be better maybe (although there is an option in the setting to speed up atb)... but since you are already dead set on playing a JRPG which are notorious for being slow, you know what you got yourself into. It’s a shame it’s overshadowed by 7 and 10 cause no one talks about 9 ever... 10 is great and all and 7 is a mess, but 9 is never given a chance. 9 was made as a celebration of the series and the definitive, truest version of the series... and Uematsu’s final time composing so he went out with a bang. I personally would always recommend 9 (in its entirety) and 10 (skipping the celestial weapons) as a starting place for newcomers... how much I would give for a sequel or remaster for 9, Dormamu I’ve come to bargain!
I'd say IV is a good starting point for those who're new to RPGs in general. You get to try out a bunch of different jobs and party setups without having to worry about choosing the right party for tough encounters since your party is tied to story progression. That said, if you've played other RPGs and want gameplay customizability and a satisfying difficulty curve that'll hook you, V is your game, tough as it may be. It works especially well for first timers since the game doesn't punish you for experimenting with classes (say, if you've no idea what a dancer is supposed to do, only to ditch it hours later because it didn't strike your fancy) thanks to the way your stats shuffle around to match your current occupation the moment you equip it. You also don't need to grind to beat the game as long as you're willing to experiment with your party setup whenever you hit a wall since the jobs come with their most essential skills and stats right off the bat, which is always a plus if you prefer to keep moving forward.
I usually recomend FFX to new. Its rather cinematic and good story. Graphics are good, characters are written well. Combat and gameplay is no too hard generaly. Soundtrack is uematsu. I think its a good hybrid of new and old Final Fantasy.
Maybe I'm biased because 9 is my favorite (okay well actually, Tactics is my favorite, but 9 is my favorite numbered title) but I actually think that's a great place to start (also biased because it's where I started) but since the entire point of 9 was for each character to represent one of the classic jobs that stemmed from Final Fantasy in the first place and be sort of a soft reboot, I think it's a great place to jump in.
I think that 9 is a good game to start because it has a classic final fantasy setting, unlike more modern final fantasy games. It has a medieval, steampunk setting, characters based on job classes, airships, chocobos, etc.
Lol ff8 was my introduction to the series when i was 10 years old. Yeah junction back then gave me a hard time back then. When i replayed it when i was older and actually knew what i was doing i realized how broken that system was lol
I remember watching my friends playing FF VIII (I'm not a big fan of FF, but I enjoyed watching it). Taking aside the fact that they spent 3-4 hours in that GOD-FORSAKING card game, what I realized (especially later, when I gave it a shot) is that the whole Junction system makes all the characters the same. Squall can have 100 Firagas on strength, but when the game forces You to change characters, you can detach those 100 Firagas and gave them to someone else. That way, characters (at least to me) didn't felt quite Unique. They all had the same stats, they all could use the same Magic (that was also very odd; the fact that all the characters were Magic casters). The only thing separating them were their Limit Breaks. Also, stealing magics (which can take quite a while) buffed your character very early on. Even with magic like Scan, using Junction allowed you to be a powerhouse even before entering Ifrit's Cave.
@@BASSTakena It fits within the lore though, all party members except Rinoa are Garden student, trained to use GF thus all of them should be able to use magic. As for Rinoa, maybe being the daughter of a general she was trained in that field too.
Yeah me too, once i know how the junction system works, the game broke. There are a lot of OP and game breaking items/magic/limit breaks in the game as well.
I started my journey last year. I started chronologically with I and just finished III. I'm super hyped about the next games and I'm glad I went through the first ones... first. The first one I played 2 times in a row using every job. The second one was very intriguing and had some moments that were burned in my brain, so generally I liked. It's my favorite cast of characters including NPCs and villains from the first 3. And the third one was a total blast. It was only hold back by the last dungeon (bullshit tower and dipshit world) and the times it kinda forced you to use specific jobs or fricking MINI every damn time. But it was a nice game. If I have to pick a favorite, it's the first one. It's not as rich and fun as 3 (sometimes), but it's more well rounded and very good and fun from start to finish. Oh and I didn't grind. The only moment I felt it was necessary and did it a LITTLE was in the dark world, last dungeon of III. Maybe one magic or two from II. But that was it. And I'm really excited to start playing IV.
Glad to see someone willing to put up with old school games and can appreciate them chronologically. I recomend you to also play the dragon quest series, despite being older and the true origin of the jrpg genre, i think they have aged better overall. And there are several remakes to help you go through the original NES games
FF1 has a certain level of charm that most people can enjoy, as long as you like RPGs, considering its the grandaddy of narrative JRPGs. (Dragon Quest/Warrior being the actual first JRPG.) You'll look back fondly on the game. What was your favorite party in FF1?
sette man youre gonna fall inlove with series once you play 4 lol. Ff4 is also a masterpiece, damn youre lucky you have all these ff games waiting for you to get played lol
I consider final fantasy 12 as a story being told from an outsiders perspective, the main characters are indeed Basch and Ash, though I wouldn't consider Balthier as the main character even if he is the main man. You play as Vaan who kind of exists outside the plot as an observer who sort of tags along and makes trouble for the party, and of course the playable character had to have a main squeeze so they added our black mage goddess Penelo in there. Vaan kind of acts as a plot device to introduce the player to the game world and to bring the other characters together, he does this by bumbling his way through the storyline until everything sort of collides and people are forced to work together to get things done. But wait, why would you play as Vaan as soon as you have enough party members to get rid of him? You give him the best overall stats, that's how. This guy is by far the most overpowered character as he can do anything well, and has one of the fastest attack animations to boot. All of this was made possible because Square was afraid that having an older character be the main character wouldn't resonate with their audience... sigh, ff12 was too before its time. If it had come out 6 years later then the story could have been halfway decent, but it needs a meh sequel to give us the entire story and make sense of things. But it's not a bad game and I loved the Gambit battle system, the story isn't a total wash, it just would make more sense if they had written it around Basch like they were going to do originally. But its very fun, the visuals are awesome and customization is incredible. It's still one of my top 5 Final fantasies: 1. FF9 - 2. FF6 - 3. FF7 - 4. FF10 - 5. FF12 (I love you FF8, your a wonderful love story but not an amazing final fantasy)
I started with XIII, liked it, played XIII-2 after and loved it (Many years ago). Loved it so much I cried a lot at the end. It's funny to hear that most people disliked it enough to completely disregard it as a mainline entry lol
12:30 "playing ff6 makes the earlier games kinda suck more" that was kinda my mistake, i started with ffX and went backwards so getting spoiled by ff6 made ff5 harder to even play since theres so many roles you have to grind...a ton
I started with VIII, then bought IX, went back to VII, then got X on release. At that point the PS1 ports of the earlier titles Europe flat out didn't get originally. IX's still my favourite, agree X-2 has the best combat system. You do good work, Austin.
I started with FF9 and it was the best starting point! It has a really great story, and I never felt it was slow. Also, the nostalgia stuff didn't really matter. If you notice those points, great, but if you don't, it doesn't make a difference.
17:40 I'm sorry, did you just completely forget about Fire Emblem? Arguably the more popular SRPG? I mean, I love Disgaea, but Fire Emblem is Fire Emblem
I started with IX. Love, love, love it. Me and my dad would play it together. His first one too. We then got 10. We didn't like it. He was obsessed with 11 though. I tried 13, but I didn't like it. Haven't tried any others. Everyone I know who likes VII insults IX, so I don't want to try VII when they're rude about my favorite FF game.
7 is hands down my favorite. Im playing through 7 and 9 right now and 9 has so much dang charm its adorable lol. The music is stellar and all I can ever think is many I wish 7 had these graphics lol. The only final fantasy I have no love for is 8 and thats cuz...well its 8 lmao
Final Fantasy VI definitely is a contender for greatest game of all time at the point when it was released. Few games that were this ahead of their time.
Its pretty ok but you can tell that the game was meant to be played on a handheld. The story is pretty much about a class of trained kid soldiers who have to win a war and the horrors of war.
The game has a fairly enjoyable combat system that likes to workaround the "unbeatable boss" limitations with its combat gimmicks and wide variety of playstyles, however it is hard limited by the multiplayer handheld aspect, meaning a story centering around 14 main characters feels rather shallow and the lack of multiplayer hampers its replayability. It certainly has a lot of strengths in its more action-styled combat, but its definitely lacking as a complete FF package.
@@christianlopez707 I think it's a pretty ballsy ending that could have meant a lot more if the game had more meaningful story and character moments throughout.
I started with Final Fantasy IX. It felt just right to me since I've heard about almost every Final Fantasy except this one. I genuinely loved what I experienced, and I replayed it again and again whenever I first got it.
I didn't know anything about Final Fantasy 12, but when you said it was one of the most beautiful PS2 games I almost spit my water. THAT WAS PS2!? I LEGIT THOUGHT IT WAS PS3 THE WHOLE TIME I WAS WATCHING!
"Final Fantasy II is a good place for beginners if they hate themselves" Jesus Christ Austin please never cover a Where to Start on DMC I can only take such a heavy callout once.
12 and 9 are so good and it’s nice to hear someone that agrees. I didn’t know FF14 became good. Is it worth trying to get into now? FF15 would have been a lot better if you had the DLC integrated into the main plot, the film was given away for free with the game and the brotherhood anime was in-game flashbacks. But yeah, it’s a good game. Just not a good place to start. FF10 would be my pick for the best place to start, too.
If you're willing the invest the time and money and don't mind the mmo aspects and a pretty slow start (However the developers have stated they plan on revising the base game's story progression in about 6-7 months, so if you wanted to wait to potentially get a better base game experience that's an idea). Once you start getting into the expansions you start seeing a lot more of the good. Stormblood is considered mediocre, but Heavensward is what caused the game to fully rise from the ashes and Shadowbringers (latest expansion) is one of the most highly praised Final Fantasy titles of all time.
@@AngelSeph XIV has a lot of story to cover, considering it’s been out for so long. To make it simple, I recommend to set your expectations as such: Play it as a single player RPG in the beginning. Only think about raiding & the other stuff till you’ve reached the end of MSQ. Granted you still need to play with others in some MSQ dungeons. But for the most part, you can be left alone (if u want to). Take in the narratives. Smell the flowers. Take ur time & enjoy it at ur own pace. BTW, you can already start the unlimited time Free Trial till level 30. Juz try it out.
X, then VII, then IX. If you enjoy that, dive into VI. The rest that I have played are good stories, but not picked up as easily. IX is my favorite though
@@jeromealday614 you will struggle to find a Japanese game without cheesey dialogue though, that's almost across the board for all of their media. If you're referring to the laughing scene then I think you misunderstood the scene
My first Final Fantasy was FFV, when I saw a streamer I like playing it for the Fiesta. Unfortunately, I feel like that's kinda colored me the wrong way when it comes to the series. I find it difficult to go to the other games after having the huge amount of customization available in FFV.
I think what the other guy was trying to say is that X-2 has the same sort of idea with the job system as FF V. It doesn't have the cross job skills. It's main thing is you can change jobs mid fight. The downsides to X-2 is that it can be a bit more fan service than others as well as some silliness. But it's got a great story. Also 1000 Words is my favorite song.
I’m currently playing through all the games and I have to say Final Fantasy II was WAY better than I had been led to believe. Sure the levelling system is weird but the story is so good!
"I once called Final Fantasy 15 an unfinished masterpiece..." Dude, I can tell you stories about unfinished masterpieces, and they all start and end with the words 'Crash Twinsanity'.
FF8 was my first FF, and it still is one of my favorite games of all time. Everything people criticized, the love story, the a******* reveal, the junction system, I adored all of it and missed it in every other game from the franchise. Thinking about Squall and Rinoa drifting in space makes me tear up, more than 20 years later.
XIII was my first one, and I loved it. Now after playing almost all the others I realize how many issues it has, but I still love it. XIII-2 has legit cool stuff lol
I knew it FFX would be one of the winners ! Superbutterbuns also did the same kind of video with the same result and I totaly agree with both of you on everything you said
Glad you picked IV. Even though X was my first, IV is just so easy to pick up and play and it has a very well paced story and characters to that you actually care about, considering it's an early SNES game. My favorite of all timez.
You said FFX and I immediately went 'Stay away from the SUMMONER!' because I love that line, and then you played that exact clip, and also the bit about 'I NEED FOOD' which I quote every time I'm hungry, and... your favorite FF is 9 and... are you... just me from another reality? Are you like... my... well, no, I'm probably the *evil* twin, but still!
So new to the channel via this video but wanted to share how I got into Final Fantasy, I started with XIV and wasn't even an MMO person, it was interesting learning about the games it would be calling back to and seeing how it affected people or their reactions to certain things but story wise I fell in love with it so much that I'm a little scared to go to the other ones out of fear that the stories of those ones won't live up to the standard I've been told of
playing through VII. visually, they probably should have stuck with sprites in a 2d overworld but keep the battles as they are. but im really digging it so far.
Here in Brazil it was kinda hard to get RPGs in the 16bit era. Carts were super expensive, and pirated games didn't save your progress... So when I rented Mystic Quest and finished with my brother in 3 days, it felt great! We didn't have a clue about the approach Japan had with the western market (I was 8 at the time, so whatever). I still think it was a great game to start with RPGs in general, and that motivated me to learn english too. Finally, great video Austin, you seem like a very nice guy!
here is my personal starting suggestion: 4,6,7,9 and 10 But if you are into MMOs then XIV can be an amazing gateway to the rest of the series I know people who started on 14 never played an ff game before but ended up playing the rest of tje series cuz of how much they loved 14
@@thegreatandmightyseff7214 10 is super beginner friendly and it has imo the best battle system of classic final fantasy Also...game breaking glitches?grinding in 10?i didnt need to grind much for the main story in 10 The grind only comes for post game when you are grinding for the dark aeons, the monster arena and the final super boss Penance And i didnt encounter any glitches in 10 personally
FFX is not at all beginner friendly. The battle system is pretty easy to use, but it is very boring watching op unhealable aeons to spawn and die. That leads to escaping battles because of boredom, to grinding for that op boss with the worlds longest unskippable cutscene. Also, what kind of begginner friendly game has an early game boss (Anima) with 15000 hp and an attack that insta-kills one of your guys? Does that sound begginer freindly?
@@thegreatandmightyseff7214 the boredom thing is very....very subjective Also the first seymour fight where he summons anima isnt at the beginning of the game....thats like 40% in And the fight isnt hard at all and 15k hp in ff10 is nothing when summon attacks and overdrives exceed the quadriple digits But hey each to his own so lets just agree to disagree
FFII love here. I mean even the comments in the video are what people that don’t understand it typically say. “You have to hit yourself to level up.” Just not true at all lol
Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy XII: Some of the most controversial games in the series. Me: Those two are my favorites! (Unless we count Bravely Default)
Why whould you like X? Do you know how many game-breaking glitches and grinding that game has? And not to mention unskippable cutscenes and the lack of a good leveling system? And to add on -broken characters like Auron -the summon meta - the horrible blitzball tutorial - the annoying bosses with unskippable cutscenes -the voice acting - The “side” quests - The lack of enemy variety (you just fight the same bats and wolves)
I always love watching other people’s take on each installment. It’s funny because we share so many sentiments but I also disagree on so many things. Example is I felt that the characters in 12 fell more flat then 13 but you don’t. It’s interesting to say the least. Great video though.
Ff9 was my first, and i love it.. But to be fair i prefer slow games, fast ones get me stressed i actually even turned on thr wait option for 9 (atb wont progress while youre in a submenu like choosing a spell or a target or an item) Ofc i didnt get any refferences but..i also didnt care since i didnt know them xD
But now after playing the other games you can come back and play IX again and get all the references AND enjoy the nostalgia of playing an awesome game. Win-Win.
Yea, FF X was my first. But I ended up beating FF IX first. I love 1000 Words from X-2, but I hated how easy it was to miss stuff. I feel like I need to play with a guide so as to not miss stuff.
II and III were not ported over because Nintendo of America wanted to focus on the then upcoming Super Nintendo and didn't want the NES to take any attention away from it. Some say V wasn't ported over because Square thought Americans wouldn't get the Job System, another reason why Square Idiots screwed the pooch with poor III. Also ProJared will probably kick your ass? :D
My first FF was X-2. And then 11. And then 13. My childhood was difficult. Now that being said I'm fine now and have played most of the others at least a bit, if not to completion. Best place to start is probably 9 or 10, then 6 and 7 as backups. 9 is criminally underrated (along with 5), 7 is overrated (still amazing obviously), but 6 and 10 are good embodiments of the series as a whole, both new and old. My favorite so far is 9. Hands down. Easy choice. Followed by 5. And 6. 7 is like the Ocarina of Time of the FF series. Yes it's amazing, yes it's iconic, yes it's an important part of gaming history and a game changer, but nostalgia for Ocarina of Time blinds people to how phenomenal Majora's Mask is.
Same. That's why I feel like FFV is probably a terrible place to start as well. That's where I started and I greatly miss the level of character/party customization you get in that one
To be fair I started with XV and it got me wanting to try more traditional JRPGs, and I did and I now love them. So for me atleast, it was a great way to convert someone.
I started with the og FF7 after all of the curiosity that'd been building up in me at the time because I'd always wondered how the series was actually like. To briefly summarize it was an amazing experience that definitely cemented myself as a fan of FF. I cannot wait to go back and try other games in the series as well
Ah, man. FF2 is on my list of favorites. I loved the Elder Scrolls style of skill raising. Of course, mindless grinding is one of the main reasons I play video games. It's how I zone out all the noise in the world. Yeah, stabbing myself in the shoulder for hours on end to improve my sword skill is how I stay sane. I know how that sounds, but hey, it works for me. d:
Giving ff2 grief for its training system is flawed, as the system's similarity to western rpg growth makes it easier to transition to turn based. The real flaw is the rotating fourth member seat.
First time viewer here. You were slowly winning me over until you said about FFIX being your favourite, and that was it, i was sold. Even though i know VII is a very good game and I enjoyed it, I think IX often gets overlooked and under appreciated.

The Fabula Nova Crystallis games are my favesss, but everything else is also just fantastic. Just start with any title that looks interesting to you personally imho, they're all great in their own ways.
I love watching Austin ramble. It's like listening to someone struggle to explain something they love so much yet they keep going with as much emphasis as they feel themselves. It's amazing
A few years ago I had NEVER played a Final Fantasy, but really wanted to. So I ended up doing what everyone told me not to do, I played in the numerical order and I don't regret it. I even ended up liking a lot of games that, today, are kinda forgotten.
V. IMO, the fifth chapter is the best to start with; the early parts of the game introduce you to grind, but right after that, you became open to the possibilities and the customizations there is no wrong way to play V (aside from not having a designated healer) and there are MANY possibilities; the missables are not really worth loosing sleep over, and in the remakes you can get to them anyway in the postgame; the story is mostly light with some surprisingly hard hitting moments; and most of the mechanics are quick to comprehend
Long story short: Start with VI, IX or X. Pick the one that appeals the most to you from first glance. All give a good representation of Final Fantasy and are beginner-friendly.

I really needed this. I’m really not a FF fan but I have all the games for all the retro systems to PS2 but hasn’t really played them but a collection only. It’s really hard which to play first because I don’t know anything and I want to play it by it’s timeline.
"FFVII has the loudest fanbase." You aren't freaking kidding about that. It's a great game, obviously... but the FFVII kids drive me away from my own favorite series.
@Adam Jensen I have never seen these people in every video like you are trying to claim. But there are quite literally FFVII fanatics everywhere making a bad name for their own favorite game. They are doing more harm than good to the game they love so much.
Jus how good is FFVII really? I tried to play the original on PC (PC '98 version, not the steam release or the PS1 emulation) and it just bore the crap outta me. I tried my best to play further, getting myself until the gold saucer, but i couldn't continue, the gameplay is just so boring. Any tips not to get bored?
i basically started with FFXV (only one ive finished so far) n fuckin really enjoyed the combat which somehow lead to me playing every kingdom hearts game out there.
I remember starting my FF journey with X and X-2. Not long after that, I played FF XIII with my sister, and I remember sweating so bad at the final boss!!! Now, I'm deeply in LOVE with XIV! It's gotta be one of my favorite MMORPGs to play nearly daily! I played 15, and was somewhat dissatisfied with how "uneventful" I felt picking it up and beating it with the Platinum Trophy in about two months...
I think: Start with 6 or 4 because it provides the most all encompassing classic FF formula with classic graphics and is a good baseline. Then go to 7 because it’s the updated version of the classic 2D formula with better graphics. Then go to 8 because now you’re familiar with the classics and are now ready to deviate from what has been cemented in your mind as typical. Then go to 5 because now you’ve seen the spectrum and will appreciate everything 5 has to offer and the feelz will overcome any graphical disparities you might feel from going back to 2D. Then go play any of the previous 2D ones if you want because the graphics won’t bother you. Then play 9 because now you’re ready to appreciate the penultimate version of the classic FF formula. Then go play the others.
@@WskOsc oh no... definetely not for me, the second reused half of the game was completely horrendous, it went from a 9 to a 6 in a few hours. i haven't seen a better representation of what padding in games is, than making you repeat several sections and fights several times. Thats where i put the game on easy and encounter rate on 0 just to try to speed through it, all of that just to have the most cliché jrpg surprise final boss at the end. For a 3DS jrpg i recomend either dragon quest 7 or 8 remake

My introduction to Final Fantasy was Kingdom Hearts.
_Kingdom Hearts_ was what made me go back and give the _Final Fantasy_ series (and turn based RPGs in general) a chance. I don't know what RPG turned me off of the genre, but one of them left me with such a bad impression that I swore them all off.
Omg yes same

@@charless1145 Sure, but it's ostensibly more approachable that many of the _FF_ entries. Turn based RPGs often don't look particularly fun and even if you are a fan, looks still don't tell you much.

Thank you for talking about Final Fantasy V. Just in general.
My favorite one outside of 7 nostalgia

Best final fantasy game, period.

Crisis Core: FF7 was my starting point.
No regrets.
Only good memories. And tears.
I loved crisis core it's a great game
My starting point was techinically KH1 and 2, but Crisis Core and Dissidia was where I really started. Then I dove in with FFXIII
Zack has my heart forever.
Astraldymensions You’re an oddball to me. Crisis Core is great, Dissidia, while good, I thought only appealed to FF fans. Tell me, what’re you’re thoughts on other FFs?
@@AkaiAzul
Well Dissidia is just awesome to me. You get this diverse cast of characters duking it out with explosions everwhere with a cool RPG system built into it. It's got great casual appeal for an arena fighter. I spent like 120 hours in the og Dissidia.
My thoughts on the other FFs are as follows
1. FFVII and FFIX are damn near perfect
2. FFX is great but feels very linear in terms of leveling on the normal Spehere Grid
3. FFXV is pretty good but it misses a lot of marks
4. FFXIII has great concpets and characters executed poorly due to an unclear lore (that isnt explained until the sequels). But end game gameplay is really really fun
And the best versions of each of them are:
10: HD Remaster (switch, ps4, xbone, ps3, pc, I think vita)
9: Remaster (switch, ps4, xbone, pc)
7: Remaster (switch, ps4, xbone, pc)
6: translation fixed patch for snes
4: PSP or the 3D version (if you want an easier ride, go for PSP, and the 3D version is more challenging.)
Rat Earth sound like they have personal issues
Uhhhhhhhhhh, what? FFX doesn't deliver the "standard FF experience". Like, in any way. It was criticized at the time, and still is, for changing the formula DRASTICALLY. Namely, it was a super linear hallway simulator with a heavy emphasis on cutscenes and barely any sidequests.
Maybe you meant IX? That's a good one to start with if you want the standard FF experience, at least as far as the 3D games go. For the classic formula, go with I or IV.
IX is the best ! *BabyRage*
Pretty straightforward and with a mild difficulty curve alongside a easy to understand battle system, although X is my all time favourite.
tl;dw: start with mystic quest because you're an alpha
"Don't start with VI, it'll make all the earliers games suck by comparison."
Yeah, can confirm.
Quick question, is there any way to change classes or not use the fighter button combos? those are the things i couldn't stand personally
I would say this for _VII_ .

Pikachu with a Keyblade We did get an FF4 Remake, it just wasn’t an FF4 HD remake. Still the NDS version was pretty good.
IV is the best starting point to this day IMO. Every character has a "role," and a purpose. Story is pretty good. In the later games, you can pretty much make anyone anything, everybody can use magic, etc. I enjoyed IV because not everybody can be OP badasses like my girl Rydia.
praetorxyn Eh, the villains were poorly written tbh.
FreshBeats Yeah, but aside from Kefka they all are pretty much.
praetorxyn Sephiroth is a well written villain as well though.
FreshBeats I wasn't counting 7 because I don't think "Popeye arms" is a good starting point for newbies. I think IV is because it's basically the first real refinement of the series into both good game play and a good plot. It establishes the tropes and such the rest of the series relies on.
If you start with 7, you miss out on a lot of references that are already established and such.
praetorxyn True

FFIX is my first Final Fantasy... and my absolute favorite game... ever
It will always be perfect, replaying it time and time again just cements how much it means to me.
Uematsu also composed a great amount of FF10 so he didn't stopped to FF9.
Yea. FF IX is awesome. X may have been my introduction and favorite. But IX is a close close second. It's also the first FF I beat.
TheVinnizio He also composed 1 last song for FF12, iirc.
I agree. IX is my favorite game by far. It's an incredible game that always gets overshadowed by others.
I've only played 7 and 9 so far, I'm in the middle of 8
And I without a doubt prefer 8 and 7 over 9
I'd say IV is a good starting point for those who're new to RPGs in general.
Playing it right now as my first Final Fantasy.
My intro to Final Fantasy was Kingdom Hearts...

My intro to final fantasy is Smash
@@cnhnx Yeah, I remember that. That part was kind of crazy, hehehe.
Yeah me too, once i know how the junction system works, the game broke. There are a lot of OP and game breaking items/magic/limit breaks in the game as well.
Been playing rom mods of 8 lately with some of them doing a bunch of rebalancing
@@diegog1853 And I will. I'll start DQ as soon as I finish or feel satisfied with FF

@@rawrharhar I think it was Warrior, Monk, Red Mage and Black Mage.

But it doesn't really matter since FF6 is objectively better than every game that game before it save for maybe FF5

Final Fantasy VI definitely is a contender for greatest game of all time at the point when it was released. Few games that were this ahead of their time.
i didnt see final fantasy type 0 which i was a tad curious about
Its pretty ok but you can tell that the game was meant to be played on a handheld.
@@flamingfighter3334 I do think the ending is definitely one of the saddest in the whole series.

FF15 would have been a lot better if you had the DLC integrated into the main plot, the film was given away for free with the game and the brotherhood anime was in-game flashbacks. But yeah, it’s a good game. Just not a good place to start.
FF10 would be my pick for the best place to start, too.
Angel Kibble so like a couple of months or...?
Angel Kibble I’d probs be on the casual side of things. Thanks for the advice!
XIII-3 was my favorite
Are you like... my... well, no, I'm probably the *evil* twin, but still!
most iconic jrpg franchise ever created ♥️
Finally, great video Austin, you seem like a very nice guy!
here is my personal starting suggestion:
4,6,7,9 and 10
But if you are into MMOs then XIV can be an amazing gateway to the rest of the series
I know people who started on 14 never played an ff game before but ended up playing the rest of tje series cuz of how much they loved 14
Why 10? Do you know how many game-breaking glitches and grinding that game has?
@@thegreatandmightyseff7214 10 is super beginner friendly and it has imo the best battle system of classic final fantasy
Also...game breaking glitches?grinding in 10?i didnt need to grind much for the main story in 10
The grind only comes for post game when you are grinding for the dark aeons, the monster arena and the final super boss Penance
And i didnt encounter any glitches in 10 personally
FFX is not at all beginner friendly. The battle system is pretty easy to use, but it is very boring watching op unhealable aeons to spawn and die. That leads to escaping battles because of boredom, to grinding for that op boss with the worlds longest unskippable cutscene. Also, what kind of begginner friendly game has an early game boss (Anima) with 15000 hp and an attack that insta-kills one of your guys? Does that sound begginer freindly?
Not to mention Anima uses the attack over and over again
@@thegreatandmightyseff7214 the boredom thing is very....very subjective
Also the first seymour fight where he summons anima isnt at the beginning of the game....thats like 40% in
And the fight isnt hard at all and 15k hp in ff10 is nothing when summon attacks and overdrives exceed the quadriple digits
But hey each to his own so lets just agree to disagree

MY HEART IT HUUUUUURTS.
FF2 gang this our time to rise up
Purge the naysayers
Yeah, I had a lot of fun playing FF2
I love the concept, but it felt more refined later in games like Grandia but they had 10 years of game design to get to that XD
And to add on
-broken characters like Auron
-the summon meta
- the horrible blitzball tutorial
- the annoying bosses with unskippable cutscenes
-the voice acting
- The “side” quests
- The lack of enemy variety (you just fight the same bats and wolves)
TheGreatAndMighty Seff bruh, chill. People can like what they want.
But to be fair i prefer slow games, fast ones get me stressed i actually even turned on thr wait option for 9 (atb wont progress while youre in a submenu like choosing a spell or a target or an item)
Ofc i didnt get any refferences but..i also didnt care since i didnt know them xD
But now after playing the other games you can come back and play IX again and get all the references AND enjoy the nostalgia of playing an awesome game. Win-Win.
Start at 9. It got the early vibe and perfect mechanics done right.
a year later you still think 9 is a good place to start?
i started with 15, just finished it a couple days ago
probably gonna play 7 next
10 was my starting point no ragerts lol i was 8 when it came out...oddly enough i beat x-2 before x.
Ragerts sound like a really hard strategy game genre.
Yea, FF X was my first. But I ended up beating FF IX first.
I love 1000 Words from X-2, but I hated how easy it was to miss stuff. I feel like I need to play with a guide so as to not miss stuff.
"no ragerts"
This is spot on. I used to also say 9, but you make a good point about it.
Great video all in all.
FFV's job system made all the other FF games hard to like IMO. It's such a good RPG for it's RP elements.
Same. That's why I feel like FFV is probably a terrible place to start as well. That's where I started and I greatly miss the level of character/party customization you get in that one
@@DigitalxGamer I agree with you agreeing with me. I think it's a good entry to the weird melodrama that you find in later installments though.
To be fair I started with XV and it got me wanting to try more traditional JRPGs, and I did and I now love them. So for me atleast, it was a great way to convert someone.
8 was my first final fantasy and BOY DID I EAT THAT LOVE STORY UUUUUUP
I have never played a Final Fantasy game and started 9 yesterday. I'm LOVING it- even the card game in it! And I love Vivi.
Love how you mentioned the censorship thing in the ff8 remaster lol sounded just like the people complaining about it
I started with the og FF7 after all of the curiosity that'd been building up in me at the time because I'd always wondered how the series was actually like.
I know how that sounds, but hey, it works for me. d:
It makes my heart Happy to see that me talking about Disgaea so much has made Austin forget about Fire Emblem as a strategy RPG series
Even though i know VII is a very good game and I enjoyed it, I think IX often gets overlooked and under appreciated.
for those looking for the classic ff11 experience, check out the private server: { Eden FFXI }
it's a classic experience with the level cap being 75. This private server is a work in progress, but will go up to the end of ToAU. This server aims to be as era accurate as possible, with minimum QoL improvements. The few QoL improvements added include mog wardrobe 1+2, making inventory management a breeze. It is also the best private server to currently play on, as it has the fewest issues and bugs, has the most working content, and is constantly adding and improving the game. The dev team is very active, and is about to release the remainder of the CoP missions and Sea. A lot of, if not all notorious monsters are available for every area, as long as they were a part of this era of the game. Anything found in WoTG expansion and beyond won't be available, ever.
Currently playable endgame: Dynamis, Sky, BCNM (Some), ENM (Some), HNM
Planned endgame content: Sea, Limbus, Nyzul Isle, Assault, Einherjar, Salvage, ZNM

I'm pretty sure ff11 the original is still up. www.playonline.com/ff11us/index.shtml
My first final fantasy was ffvii and that was probably the best way to start this awesome franchise
Dragon Warrior on NES was my first RPG. 10 year old me had a real fun time figuring out what the hell everyone was talking about.
I don't know anything about final fantasy, nor do I plan on playing it, and this was still really entertaining
iV was my start! I loved IV!
Yooo I saw that Peelander Z shirt you're wearing! Straight up best show I ever been to.
Where's Final Fantasy Type-0?
I forgot that even existed until i saw this lol. I liked it but never got super far in it
This is fun to watch as someone in the weird position of playing FF6 first- in 2017-2018
Completely agree with your recommendations. And yes VI is a masterpiece
A few years ago I had NEVER played a Final Fantasy, but really wanted to.
So I ended up doing what everyone told me not to do, I played in the numerical order and I don't regret it. I even ended up liking a lot of games that, today, are kinda forgotten.
I am one of those 5 people who sincerely like FF II xD
👎🏾
V. IMO, the fifth chapter is the best to start with; the early parts of the game introduce you to grind, but right after that, you became open to the possibilities and the customizations
there is no wrong way to play V (aside from not having a designated healer) and there are MANY possibilities; the missables are not really worth loosing sleep over, and in the remakes you can get to them anyway in the postgame; the story is mostly light with some surprisingly hard hitting moments; and most of the mechanics are quick to comprehend
Long story short:
Start with VI, IX or X.
Pick the one that appeals the most to you from first glance. All give a good representation of Final Fantasy and are beginner-friendly.
@@Noah-wv4td 4 isn't bad, it's just that the others are better to start with due to certain aspects. 3, however, is a no-go, no matter what version. I mean, who likes high encounter rates and grinding.
@@Noah-wv4td Ok. My recommendation is for all the people who don't love those things.
@@ZX3000GT1 if you didn't like it by the time you finished Midgar then it's not worth it
i basically started with FFXV (only one ive finished so far) n fuckin really enjoyed the combat which somehow lead to me playing every kingdom hearts game out there.
IV and X?
Well holy moly, that is where I started.
Rebuttal to ur ff2 thing;
The emperor. He's great
I think:
Start with 6 or 4 because it provides the most all encompassing classic FF formula with classic graphics and is a good baseline.
Bravely Default is the best Final Fantasy game.
You haven't played FF6 or 9.
@@georgecallacna621 I have, and I still say Bravely Default is the best Final Fantasy game.
Jacob Shaw Default is good until it resets everything and turns into a trash game
@@georgecallacna621 FF9 was literally my first FF game sir, and FF6 is one of my favorite games of all time.
My first Final Fantasy was FInal Fantasy III on the DS and I liked it a lot. I had some trouble in the beginning but after that for me the difficulty spike was just right.
