This is by far, the best Pulp song ever. And just when I didn't think I could love it anymore than I do already, along comes Sophie and smashes it! She really does it the justice it so rightly deserves - Awesomeness!!
Also MCR have done Common People a few times, up to you if you think that's any good! And Keane have done Disco 2000 a few times, which is a bit of a miss imho.

Wow, she's a really good singer. I only recently discovered her due to SaltBurn; I didn't expect a singer who sings dance music to be able to sing other types of music. I
Welcome to the world of Sophie Ellis-Bextor! Have fun exploring her discography. I live in the US, and have been a fan since I first heard her music while I was stationed overseas 20 years ago. I recently got to meet her in person in NYC, and she was just as kind as she is talented and beautiful. Have fun listening to her music!
You say you've gotta go home 'Cause he's sitting on his own Again this evening And I know you're gonna let him Bore your pants off again Oh no, it's half-past eight You'll be late You say you've never been sure But it makes good sense for you To live together Still, you've bought a toy That can reach the places He never goes I know it's getting late He's so strange Do you remember the first time? I can't remember a worse time Oh, but you know that we've changed So much since then Oh yeah, we've grown Now I don't care what you're doing No, I don't care if you screw him Just as long as you save a piece for me Oh yeah, ooooh So you've gotta go home Well at least there's someone there That you can turn to And you never have to face up to The night on you're own Jesus, it must be great To be straight Do you remember the first time? I can't remember a worse time Oh, but you know that we've changed So much since then Oh yeah, we've grown No I don't care what you're doing No I don't care if you screw him Just as long as you save a piece for me Oh yeah, ooooh So you've gotta go home You've gotta go home You say you've gotta go home You have gotta go home Do you remember the first time? I love it when she slams her shoes into the floor.. God I miss the 90s so much it hurts I never knew at the time how much I would miss them or realised how good they were 😢
I totally agree. It was such a magical time. The music, the football, the culture, the hope as we moved to new political ground. I often wish I had had the foresight to realise at the time.
Love the original and I love this. Works so well sang by a woman to a woman, and her voice is gorgeous. Beautiful pop, everyone here is working so hard and it pays off so much. Love this just as much as the Pulp original.
For anyone who's ever been mixed up in the sort of relationship the song deals with, the ironic sarcasm in the performance of the line "don't be late" is superbly done... She gets it. Good job.
She has to push herself to hit the notes in the chorus, and that makes it better. It's great to see a singer taking on a challenge like this in a live setting.
Top credit to Sophie & the musicians on this cover version -- they perform their hearts out. Brings home the music & times of my youth. God, do I miss the '90s.
Sophie has matured and just becomes better and better and better. More relaxed, confident and very good. Good choice of song and there are more? Come on we need more of this.
Good cover from a female perspective and an altogether more quality sound from the tones of an older sophiexxCab you remember her in the audience with' a pesimist is never disappointed?🤔
Agreed with all comments here. I'm a massive Pulp fan and clicked on this with trepidation, but it is quite simply wonderful. Brilliantly arranged and a great vocal that is faithful to the original version but nonetheless Sophie Ellis Bextor has tailored it to her voice and it is all the better for it. Really lovely :) I'd add however, it isn't better than the original, don't get too carried away people!
Sophie, hope you read this. I can't begin to tell you how much I love this. Must be your next single. Not something overproduced, this recording is right on it.
I’ve always loved this song, and seeing Pulp live was a lifetime highlight! But this is great, made all the better by S-EB not trying to mimic Jarvis’s unique vocal style. Go girl!
Jo Whiley made this performance possible with her week of britpop a couple of years ago, i remember hearing it on the radio on the way home from work that evening and it just took me way back to the 90s, and her voice on this track sounded amazing, it gave me good chills all down my spine, i have them good chills again =)
I remember the first time; the first time I heard this song. It wasn't a recording. I was sitting on the grass in Roundhay Park on a warm day and Jarvis Cocker was standing right in front of me singing it.
I’m absolutely in love I think! Love Sophie Anyway but this is just mesmerising and fantastic in every way! I loved the original Pulp version and was pretty sure that couldn’t be topped but in my view, she has managed to do it !!
Wow Sophie! A timeless and personal favourite. I never expected to hear a cover and would never have dreamt of it to be on par, if not better, than the original.
You say you've got to go home cos he's sitting on his own again this evening. I know you're gonna let him bore your pants off again. Oh God, it's half past eight, you'll be late. Love Pulp, Love Sophie. Her kitchen Disco's are must views. This is like listening to a new record. 'Pin Ups' was big for Bowie and Sophie could try this concept. Jarvis will be loving this.
I have a massive musical crush as a 45yr old on her. From her floor fillers that got me through nightshifts at Kidlington Sainsbury's when I ran out of money as a student, to her kitchen discos and general DJ coolness. What a tune!
Huge pulp fan but Sophie knocks this out of the park. She seems to give it another level.
With you there I adore Jarvis but this is a stunner
Yes I agree
Great song writing for a start. Obviously Jarvis is the man but my goodness Sophie absolutely nails it here. She is stunning.
🙂🤪
Yea well, Sophie has that effect 😊, Jarvis made it so.
I love this version and return to it often.
I just have 👍✌✌🇬🇧🇬🇧

Not many people can pull off a Pulp cover, but this is very good!
First really good Pulp cover I've heard. Welcome to other suggestions (besides Shatner's, ha).

@@adsheff Keane was definitely a miss, especially the vocals. Doesn't have the swagger of Jarvis.

Mr Thomas that’s her signature dance lol love it
Yeah, gotta agree the 90's were amazing.
Yeah the 90s was top stuff. The rise of 90s Britpop was an amazing time to be alive.
End of the Century was the end of music for me anyway
I totally agree. It was such a magical time. The music, the football, the culture, the hope as we moved to new political ground. I often wish I had had the foresight to realise at the time.
This live version finally be put in the Kitchen Disco: Sophie's greatest hits.
A Pulp song.... being sung by the incredible SOPHIE ELLIS BEXTOR... Excuse me while I pass out. This is great!
+Eduardo Aguilar I passed out as well mate :p
Is there anything Sophie can’t cover ? Brilliant
Another cover totally nailed by Sophie. This is one of my favourites.
How have I only found this?! I’m a grown man crying. Favourite song + favourite voice = puppy
Love the original and I love this. Works so well sang by a woman to a woman, and her voice is gorgeous. Beautiful pop, everyone here is working so hard and it pays off so much. Love this just as much as the Pulp original.
Damm this girl can sing. What a voice and what a cover. Take a bow hun that was fantastic
Always brilliant. Everyone concerned playing an absolute blinder. What a performance.
This is so good! BBC should get Sophie to record a few more Britpop covers and put them on a compilation. She's got such a good voice!
For anyone who's ever been mixed up in the sort of relationship the song deals with, the ironic sarcasm in the performance of the line "don't be late" is superbly done... She gets it. Good job.
For a voice that often does have a tense, drawling edge, I was surprised that she didn't just exaggerate that into a sneer
I think she got it just right.
She has to push herself to hit the notes in the chorus, and that makes it better. It's great to see a singer taking on a challenge like this in a live setting.
Love Sophie's cover versions, big Pulp fan and this is top notch. Right up there with her version of Wuthering Heights imo,
Top credit to Sophie & the musicians on this cover version -- they perform their hearts out. Brings home the music & times of my youth. God, do I miss the '90s.
I love Pulp, but this version is absolutely outstanding. Brilliant stuff from Sophie!
One of the finest covers of any song ever. She puts so much into it that you can believe the emotions and the story.
She has ludicrously good cheekbones.
Also, good cover

I think it’s as good as she sings it with as much heart and pain as what Jarvis ever could.
Doesn’t get much better than this, a collaboration would be amazing
Excellent live version of one of the best songs of the 90s. Congratulations to the singer and the band!
Sophie, hope you read this. I can't begin to tell you how much I love this. Must be your next single. Not something overproduced, this recording is right on it.
Agreed, this is a fabulous cover, doing the song proud, better than Pulps really, sorry.
ARLO999 fabulous cover and sexy but emotionless compared to the subtlety and intensity of Pulps original
ARLO999 no.
I keep coming back to listen.
Do you remember the first time... you listened to this, sitting on your own, in the evening
Usually cover versions are pretty naff, especially when they are of classics. But this is awesome, a great vocal from a classy Lady, top job Sophie!
This is utterly brilliant.....

This lady is Gorgeous, and her Voice, performance and feel of the song is amazing .. Go Sophie, a real class act
This is great and I love that the guitarist plays the guitar bits during the chorus like in the original Pulp version....a great guitar part.
