  • What a great piece of kit the KX3 is, it's just a load of fun for the person who loves remote qrp operation. I have cheated and popped a 40m beam up at 85 feet on this beautiful radio to really see what it can do. I worked the USA on 5 watts and that was impressive. Definitely the perfect companion if you head out camping. Cheers brenton vk3cm jdw229 pls subscribe and also feel free to join us on Facebook at Aussie Radio Pickers or vk ham sales and service anytime.....

If one comes from a background of the HW-7 or 8, and the little capable but drifty MFJ single band QRP rigs, this is a heavenly rig. I have an Icom 7300 on my desk and I love it. The KX-3 goes outside with me and it is a delight to use. I have not exercised all its options yet, but it is beyond "good enough" for me.

Spot is useful for zeroing in on a CW signal. Find a signal, turn CWT on and then tap SPOT tune in. KX3 is an awesome portable rig which you can push to transmit at 15W with the correct external power source. 2E0HWO. 73

I had severe buyers remorse after buying my KX3 and PX3 panadapter about 4 years ago. I paid about $ 2500 loaded with options to import into Africa. Speaker is the worst I have ever heard on a radio - tinny and vibrates at half power level, any cell phone speaker sounds better. Rubber knobs are wobbly. Very complicated UI - where some buttons are not labeled, and most have 3 different functions. In 4 years I have only made 4 QSO's on it - after I first bought it. I was so disappointed with it that it has been returned to its box and put away in a cupboard. Now, my new Icom IC-705 is a lovely radio, man I love the IC-705. One really good thing about the KX3 is the ATU, it really has a wide range tuner, and is fast to tune. Receive audio is excellent when using good stereo headphones, but useless with the built-in speaker

The Kx3 receiver will be a lot better than the 705, the 7300 receiver has a harshness to its audio and the filters are not very good and i expect the 705 to be the same.
I use the headphones most of the time so it’s a non issue. The speaker in the fr-891 isn’t the best but it’s got such a good receiver With great audio no speaker will ever sound as good as a good set of headphones.
Icon concentrate more on bling than receiver performance, it’s a cool radio with nice features but the kx3 will win hands down at night with a packed 80 m band with tonnes of strong signals.

@@o00scorpion00o I actually own the radios you mention - IC-7300, IC-705, KX3, and have switched between them using my SteppIR DB18 beam antenna. Nope, the receiver in my KX3 can hear no better than the Icom rigs. It's not just bling - if you understand how direct sampling works without any lossy IF stages, you will see why the new generation Icom SDR rigs are so good, and high up on the Sherweng Engineering rating. I will swop my loaded KX3 and PX3 pan adapter any day for another IC-705 or IC-7300

@@johnk8091 Sherword reports are find and he has all the tech to test for whatever but these instruments don't tell the final audio quality and the best specs don't make up for harsh audio that is present in the 7300 compared to my FT-891, listening to DX on this radio is far nicer and easier on the ear at the end of the day all SDR Tech is no good if the audio is not good + the filters on the 891 are better and supposed to be even better on the Kx3.
I had to get the PTRX-7300 and connect it to my Airspy HF+ to get the audio to sound good and it did help But expensive options.
The 705 has nice features though and Elecraft would want to come up with something fast. Not saying I'd rule out getting a 705 in the future, it's compact and easy to carry around and the lack of a tuner doesn't bother me, but sadly in Europe the tax makes it work out around 1,757 USD before shipping costs.

I checked the price on the KX3 - so I bought a (tr)uSDX kit and built and tuned it. Good stuff.
