Malcolm, I am watching this video in a hospital dining hall while my wife is in surgery. This video is a great comfort to me in a difficult time. Thank you, brother
You are my man. You are my kind of man. I'm an alcoholic trying to get sober. But I simply love intoxication. I am a poet, a painter, a good one. But I've had to do it all alone. Until tech caught up to poetry. . . .
I just found your content about 20 minutes ago. One video and I am hooked. This is my second video that I am currently watching and this has already sealed the deal for me. Thank you for existing good sir!
Just returned from a week in London. I met a couple of YTPC presenters at JJ Fox. One of them @G Spitaletti a UK pipe maker posted a vid of it. Great visit! If he walks with me then he is everywhere I go. I felt him on my journey through London’s history. Fellowship feeds the body and mind. Long live the brotherhood of briar
Congrats on 100K subscribers, you deserve them and more. Today I’m eagerly awaiting the delivery of my third pipe, a Savinelli Churchwarden, I’m 61 and started my pipe adventure six months ago. I have such wonderful memories of my grandfather smoking pipe, my mother still has his pipes and she’s giving them to me. I’ll treasure them.
I think Aquinas is right that the Trinity can only be arrived at by Divine Revelation rather than through natural reason, but once you take it as a starting point the whole world makes a lot more sense. There is little so fundamental and so sublime and so wonderful as the Trinity of Persons, which we mirror in our own lives. Thank you for the poetry!
I would love to sit and chat with you sir. A pipe, pint, and poem. I love your content. It brings me joy in a world that is forgetting rhe simple pleasures. God bless you and please keep making content and writing.
Malcolm, a friend started a piping TH-cam page and that has led to me being sucked down the algorithm wormhole. It has been a joy to find your channel. I was raised to appreciate the arts and it has been a great reminder to appreciate poetry and books.
Glad to see that lovely Loar guitar again! Reminds me of my dad’s old Gibson ES-175, just without the cutaway. Beautiful instrument and nice pipe, too! Blessings
"For me? Just my friends." What a fantastic line. Have fun at the improvisation talk, that sounds fascinating! As a musician myself, I'd love to go to that. I'd love to hear some more poetry on the art of music if you know of any
Improvisation. The mirror of the soul of the moment. Listening to what you are hearing and reacting with your interpretation. Most excellent discussion Malcolm. This applies to so much of life. Be well dear friend.
Oh keep up the guitar routine and you will be in fine fettle in no time! Bravo. I think serendipity, play, and Jung's idea of synchronicity all swirl together when we improvise.
What a lovely sound to welcome us! Don't stop, we're enjoying it... 💞 💙 Thanks for sharing the poems, and best wishes for the event, which no doubt goes better for a little thought and preparedness. By the way, we haven't forgot the wonderful poetry you rediscovered recently from 40 years ago. 🙂 Warm regards to you both.
You remind me of my dad in a lot of ways. He loved Tolkien, guitar playing, and sailing. He wasn't much into pipes or pipe smoking, but 3 out of 4 isn't bad.
Congrats on the big 100! I love your channel so much! Been totally swallowed up by your content since I found it a couple of days ago. Please never stop sharing these kind of videos; you're doing a great service in providing content on TH-cam that is actually worthwhile! Thank you, thank you, thank you!! ❤
Thank you for these readings...I believe staying open may be one the tasks of our times. Malign forces seek to close us off from ourselves and each other. Perhaps that is why tyrants and demagogues so often attack the arts. I have been dipping into Tolkien lately and this does seem to be a theme...good things happen when characters and places open their doors especially to outsiders. While Sauron nearly wins by forcing peoples to isolate, cities to close their gates etc...
Life is improv. Depending on your angle, learning how to trust Mother Nature, god, or the universe is key to finding happiness and fulfillment. I don't plan for anything and just let things happen. They are going to happen the way they were meant to no matter what I wish or plan for. when you don't plan you won't have expectations. you can only be disappointed when you have expectations that are not met. BTW, I have been using peterson's for years. they are the only ones I feel like I am using the proper tool for the job. like a guitar, they become a part of you over time.
I recently wrote my first bit of poetry in english (its my second language) - it was poem for my girlfriend, about the time when we first met. Under a rising starblessed sky, while the sun was going by, I found you. Like a silver lining on the dark horizon, the starlight fell upon your face. In my heart and in my thoughts, I will never leave this place. Do you remember the rock of the falling sun, where everything has begun? The rock upon the mountain high - were we kissed the stars goodbye? Safe haven in a stormy sea - where our love lasts forever, until we cease to be - no more. I keep work on it, but its hard to write poetry in a language thats not ones own. Elias
Without improvisation, there would be no progress. None of the greatest music. There would be no leaders. There would be no politicians (well, maybe a silver lining here). There would be no Generals. No live Q&A. We would be Modrons or citizens of Camazotz. The greatest improvisation is born of necessity - a broken guitar string, an unanticipated question before a large audience, a flooded river. Improvisation happens in the present tense, but when successful it expands our future. Thank you Father Guite as always for leading me to think and broadening my horizons.
For us who aspire to be poets, what would you say are some practical resources to study? The best way to learn to write is to read, and I’m sure poetry is much the same. The words flow easily, but the form is hard to master!
I improvised this poem in a few minutes earlier today as I sat with my wife and infant daughter before I went to work. I looked at my daughter and couldn’t help thinking about how bittersweet it will be later in down the road when she marries and leaves. The Maple Tree Of all possessions obtained in my twenties, my little tree sapling sat closest to my heart It came to me one dawn, barely twenty inches long; after feeble beginnings, it began to grow strong Many years I spent in careful nurturing, some shade, plentiful water and hours of bright sun In winter came the frost, and I covered the tree to protect it Months were spent in deep anxiety, but the fight with winter was finally won The maple reached for the sky as two decades had gone by And my tree began to no longer need me It warmed itself when cold, its leaves flashed red and bold I stood back and watched it continue to grow sweetly Then a man came along, much younger than myself, and begged if he could buy the land; My maple sat within its boundary, and though I wish forever at my home she’d stand, I could not rightly refuse him her hand And so my maple moved on, in the care of another, and was always loved well by the man; My only request was that as often as she can, to come home and see me and her mother
New subscribers here too, I have just got into poetry and I'm in my early sixties. I am totally unskilled in the art but write as led by the Spirit of God. From a background of being a failure educationally never attaining any English O levels because of being dyslexic and more creative than academic, but God has the last laugh
Really wish I'd have found your channel during lock down. You are exactly what TH-cam almost was, and should be. Have you done a purely pipe video? I ask because im interested in tryng a pipe but I suspect like lots of your viewers the only thing I know is the scent of pipe smoke is divine, please sit down (with an appropriate ale) and make an idiots guide (or series 👀)
I'm nearly 70 Malcolm and take great pride in telling people that my bedroom/study is based on yours. The confused expression on their faces is something to behold? Don't change my friend, just remain in that chair surrounded by shelves full of books expounding that feeling that anyone who doesn't read would never understand....it's a book thing.
Just a thought, Malcolm. Have you ever thought about maybe getting your jacket dry-cleaned and ironed? Or is that just part of the Bilbo-Gandalf look? Plus, these days, pipe-smoking does not set a good example to the young. (I now only smoke cigars.)
Malcolm, I am watching this video in a hospital dining hall while my wife is in surgery. This video is a great comfort to me in a difficult time. Thank you, brother
Best wishes for the wife and her surgery
Prayers of comfort, my friend.
Best wishes and prayers for a speedy recovery sir.

Imagine if Malcolm offered a Patreon service where one could pay a few hundred pounds to do just that! It’d be very popular.
It is a famous Church to me as a classical music lover, one of the best acoustics anywhere!
Just when I thought Malcom couldn’t get any cooler he starts a video playing a little blues and smoking a pipe.
Malcolm congratulations on 100K subscribers you've brought us all so much joy from Beowulf to Tolkien and on, continued success and God bless!
I'm sure you meant to say 100K. 😄

The Maple Tree
Of all possessions obtained in my twenties, my little tree sapling sat closest to my heart
It came to me one dawn, barely twenty inches long; after feeble beginnings, it began to grow strong
Many years I spent in careful nurturing, some shade, plentiful water and hours of bright sun
In winter came the frost, and I covered the tree to protect it
Months were spent in deep anxiety, but the fight with winter was finally won

And so my maple moved on, in the care of another, and was always loved well by the man;
My only request was that as often as she can, to come home and see me and her mother
