I met Ernie Shavers back in 1990. I have never had a handshake like that in my life, before or since. His hand was like a beef roast. Meaty, heavy and big. All I though was, "wow, I never, ever would want to get hit by that hand".
He spoke at my school, he was a heck of a gentlemen. Good guy, when I talked to him.
You need to see Riddick Bowe hand too. 😅
See the fight vs Herbie Hide what he did to him
When they mean heavy handed fighters they really mean it
Hand size is not everything. Rocky Marciano had Tiny hands and KO Ed everybody

@@lordmaster2562 rocky had small hands but they were meaty
Rest in peace ernie. Most underrated heavyweight of all time.
@Jack B Sometimes autocorrect is unnecessarily cruel. Riddick Bowie? That's just messed up.
@Jack B Absolutely. Bowe at his peak was good, very good. I think Bowe can beat a lot of the 90's heavyweights. I just don't think Bowe can beat Lennox most of the time. Lennox's jab makes the difference. Bowe outclasses older Foreman but Bowe likes to trade blows. Foreman might catch Bowe in an exchange and knock him out like he did Moorer. For the same reason Bowe would have problems with Earnie Shavers, RIP champ. Foreman and Shavers are guys you don't want to go to war with, but Bowe probably can't help himself, lol.
@Jack B A fit and motivated Riddick Bowe would be a nightmare to most Heavyweights of any era. He was that good.

Shavers hit Ali and Ali laughed at him. I guess when Ali laughs and clowns you, it means it hurts.
Henry Cooper hit Ali with a left hook that wouldve ended the fight if for not at the END of the round.
I think tyson had shocked the world with his ability, speed, technique and the classic peek a boo.

@@pauloskidane2819 Floyd Patterson had nowhere near the defensive ability of Tyson and didn't have the punching power or angles either. Bad comparison.
He is known as one of the hardest punchers in boxing history. I’ve heard a fighter who fought him say it was like being hit across the head by a baseball bat.
What was his secret with his punching power training?
@@DonDeMarcoKarlsruhe i guess it have to do with genetics aswell, how come some boxer hit harder then others, how come some boxers have tremendous speed. training play a huge role , and also your body size , how you are built, look at thomas hearns, he was very wide and was able to get extreme torque in his right hand. but i think " either you have it or you dont" apply aswell.

Tyson v Shavers would be fun
Earnie Shavers vs. the D'Amato/Rooney-era Tyson would've, indeed, been fun. I'm not automatically giving Tyson the win, however. Neither had an exceptionally strong chin, and while Tyson was a hard puncher, he was nowhere near the class of Shavers. To be fair, in the heavyweight division, who was?
Now, if you're talking the Don King-era Mike Tyson, when he became a brawler, I'm definitely giving the fight to Mr. Shavers.
BrownsFan Tyson had one of the best chins ever.
Real talk. The punishment Tyson took from Buster Douglas proves Mike had one of the best chins ever. And I can't see Shavers lasting more than 2 rounds with Mike in his prime. If Quarry knocked out Shavers then what would Mike Tyson have done to him ?
I don't give Tyson much of a chance against ANY of the great fighters of the 70s, with the exception of Ken Norton, who always got pummeled by big punchers. I'm including Shavers, Ron Lyle, Jerry Quarry, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, and of course Ali. I think they all would've more than likely beaten Tyson, who feasted his whole boxing career on tomato cans and boxers slightly and even well past their primes, and gotten beat up badly by fighters with tremendous heart and above-average boxing skills (Holyfield twice, Douglas and Lewis)
Rush Ron Razor ruddock is one of the hardest hitters and hit nearly as hard as shavers yet tyson made him look like shit
I met Ernie when he worked the door on Yates Wine Lodge in Liverpool years ago. What a great fella he is. Absolutely no ego. He took the time to speak to anyone and everyone, it was like you were speaking to a friend you'd known for years
I'd start trouble there just so i could say I sparred with Ernie Shavers
I met Earnie when he was working the doors at Yates (think that was the place) in Liverpool, England. He was super friendly and signed my shirt. I was trying to explain to my friend who he was. I was like ''this guy shared the ring with people like Ali!''.

Shavers landed one of the greatest right hands in heavyweight history in his knockdown of Holmes. It was incredible that Holmes got up from that.
I was a fight fan during the golden age of heavyweights, The 70's. I agree with you: I have NEVER seen such a devastating punch in all the fights I've watched over the decades as the one Shavers landed on Holmes in their second fight that sent Holmes to the canvass..

Both hit very hard. Ali can attest to that and so can Larry - speaking of Earnie Shavers obviously, but stylistically this would be a rough go of it for Earnie. Young Tyson was just too slick and fast. A rare combination of speed and power. Tyson created angles opponents dreaded too. Never saw the uppercuts coming.
I agree. Sadly, Tyson is very underrated and judged on bad performances against fighters such as Michael Douglas. The secret to his success was down to Cus D'Amato, who taught him the old school style of fighting and encouraged him to watch hours of tapes of Jack Dempsey, Rocky Marciano, Sonny Liston, Floyd Patterson, Joe Frazier etc... I'm sure he observed Ernie Shavers. During my time watching boxing, I have never seen anyone throw fast and powerful combos as Tyson. He was a deadly finisher.

badsolja1 Shavers might have had the punching strength but he didn't have the speed nor the defense. Tyson would've simply evaded his punches just like he evaded the punches of many boxers in his prime. He would evade evade throw a left hook/right hand and go on that way until Shavers is knocked out.
Don't forget The Rock from Brockton Rocky Marciano 49/43 and Brown Bomber Joe Louis 66/52
thanks for the stats
Foreman himself said shavers was the hardest puncher.
Cracking man respect
Shavers looks and boxing style was simillar to Tyson's.
Scarey man in the ring and very approachable and likable outside.
I think I understand what he was trying to say, it was an unhealthy era to fight, there were a lot of tough guys, but Tyson's style with his particular skills was sophisticated for 70's fighters. I think Mike would have done well between them.
One of the Hardest hitter , most underrated heavyweight of all time
Damnn bro Rest In Peace Ernie 🖤🖤🖤
Shavers punch harder than Tyson but his greatest weakness was his chin tyson speed and technique would have defeated his lack of durability.
Always wanted to see the 2 hardest punchers . George Foreman vs Ernie Shavers . George had a better chin .

Foreman ducked Shavers (he thanked God in an interview that he never fought Shavers). George knew something (as did Frazier).
i still dont know how larry holmes got up after shavers hit him.
mark johnson i remember that fight. Holmes had a great chin to go along with that jab of his
That was a HELLUVA shot Mark. And get this, Ali fought Earnie 2 years EARLIER at age 35 and Earnie hit Ali with the SAME right hand and Ali took it. Ali was in the EARLY stages of Parkinson's Syndrome in 1976. After the Shavers Fight, Ferdie Pacheco Ali's Doctor resigned from Ali's corner because Ali refused to retire. Madison Square Garden Banned Ali from fighting there again. They weren't used to seeing Ali get hit so often. Ali had a Chin of Iron!
Because Holmes had the heart of a Champ. Holmes is very underrated because he fought at the the end of the Ali, Frazier, Norton, Foreman, Shavers, etc. era. Ali said it himself. Ali had great respect t for Holmes. Holmes just fought in a declining era in boxing.

Liston was a hard puncher as well.
Tyson killed hard punchers in 1 round. They never punched him.
Imagine Tyson taking a straight-right hand from Shavers.... lol
Tough tough guy! Shavers one of the biggest puncher of all time and competed in a very tough era.
Ali had a really tough fight and in the 15th round he really gave Ali the fight for his life there.
I really believe if Shavers was born in this current era, with his power, stamina and his skills are pretty good, he would be like the most avoided boxer.
Don't let Shaver's losses and one's where he lost via KO and one's where he seemed to have lost to low level opponents fool you. He had a really good chin and came back dominating fighters. He suffered early losses then came back frightening.
Just look at how much trouble he gave Ali then look at his fights with Larry Holmes. In the second Larry Holmes fight, Larry was punching and punching and punching and it took forever to bring Shaver's down despite throwing so many shots at him, he even chinned it out at moments and fired shots of his own to knock down Larry.
shaver's paying a lot of respect to Mike, I think it could have been a good fight. I'm almost certain Mike would win because barring power I think Mike is better in all other aspects if you look at his speed, movements etc. but Shaver's tough and Mike will feel it just like everyone else who came across Shavers always mentions about his power. The thing with Shaver he definitely has the threat of power and when Larry let his guard down Shavers managed to knock him down and Larry was a tough man. Lets not forget he really hurt Ali in their fight too and Ali might have the best chin out of all boxers.
RIP 🙏
