Pentatonix is a *fantastic* group! They have three Grammys, for their "Daft Punk Medley," "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy," and their collaboration with Dolly Parton on "Jolene." (Dolly was 71 years old when she sang that with them, and won her own Grammy for it.)
Every year Pentatonix puts out a Christmas album, so there are a *lot* of Christmas songs you could choose from, if you want to continue with a seasonal theme. This year's album is named _Holidays Around the World,_ and it's gorgeous, but it isn't the one I suggest you react to right now. Right now, I suggest you explore *last* year's Christmas album, _Evergreen,_ because it's just been nominated for a Grammy, which would be their fourth Grammy. My favorite song from _Evergreen_ is "The Prayer," which I had been hoping would receive a Grammy nomination - well, so it has now that the whole album is nominated. 😉
You may also want to check out the SuperFruit TH-cam channel. SuperFruit was a side project of two members of Pentatonix, Scott Hoying (tall blonde baritone) and Mitch Grassi (pronounced Grah'-see, emphasis on the first syllable, counter tenor - the man with the gorgeous, really high voice). Mostly SuperFruit was a vlog, and a lot of what they posted was hilarious - for instance their _Frozen_ medley, featuring Kirstie (rhymes with thirsty) Maldonado (the only woman in Pentatonix) - but some of it was deadly serious, such as their -cover- upgrade of Katy Perry's "Rise." On that one they collaborated with Brian Justin Crum, Mario Jose, and Mary Lambert, in response to the Pulse massacre in Orlando, Florida in 2016.

Holy crap, this rendition was AWESOME!!!! I've heard MANY of Pentatonix's songs over the last few years, but somehow this one slipped by me till RN - and I was JAMMIN' the whole time with you, LOL! They're just SO. GOOD! And so satisfying... keep on checking them out, the ride only gets better!
Time for the basic course on who everybody is.
In this video, from left to right:
* Avi (pronounced Ah'-vee, emphasis on the first syllable) Kaplan, lyric bass. Avi is a true basso profundo - his lowest notes have been known to blow out speakers in live performances - but he's also able to sing well into the baritone range. And Avi is the only member of Pentatonix who has ever left the band, in 2017, for personal reasons. When you watch more recent videos you'll see and hear their current bass, Matt Sallee (pronounced Suh-lee', emphasis on the second syllable). Matt is another lyric bass, and based on what I heard from him at their live performance in Denver last month (November 20, 2022) Matt can sing as low as Avi but his highest note is actually in the *tenor* range! (Note: this is personal observation and I don't have a trained ear.)
* Kirstin, AKA Kirstie (rhymes with thirsty) Maldonado. Officially Kirstin is a mezzo soprano, but in real life she sings anywhere from the alto range through the coloratura soprano range - both the lowest and the highest female ranges.
* Scott Hoying, lyric baritone. Scott's lowest register is well into the bass range and his highest register is in the tenor range. In official recordings the bass will record a second track so they can layer in his harmony part when he's singing a solo, but in live performances Scott takes care of the bass harmonies during the bass's solos.
* Mitch Grassi (pronounced Grah'-see, emphasis on the first syllable), counter tenor. Mitch has a range of just over 6 octaves. Shawn Stockman, of Boyz II Men, described his voice as "one of the prettiest voices I have ever heard in my life." And Mitch still feels insecure about his voice because of the bullying he suffered for it in high school.
* Kevin Olusola (pronounced Oh-loosh"-oh-luh', primary emphasis on the second syllable, secondary emphasis on the fourth syllable). We don't hear it as often as we'd like, but Kevin has a beautiful tenor voice and is known for his falsetto. In addition to being one of the best beatboxers in the world, if not *the* best, Kevin plays keyboard, saxophone, and cello. He performed at Carnegie Hall when he was a child, and already had one Grammy of his own when he joined Pentatonix at the ripe old age of 22, just after graduating from Yale pre-med. He speaks five languages, including Mandarin, has an infectious laugh that seems to light up the world, and has developed a technique for beatboxing while playing the cello, which he calls "celloboxing." In short, Kevin is a genius.

My top favorite Christmas song from Pentatonix is Winter Wonderland/Don't Worry Be Happy. The first time I heard it I knew it would be an instant classic. Great reaction!
That fabulous bass is the great Avi Kaplan.
He was the original bass for PTX and was with them for 6 years. The group won 3 Grammy's while he was with them.
He now has a solo career and just released another album this past spring.
He is a classically/operatically trained bassist and had just been hired by the L.A. Opera House when Scott of PTX found out about him and called him to join the newly forming group.
He loves to bring lite and peace to his fans and writes his own songs. His Genera is an eclectic mix of folk, Americana Folk, country, western sounds.

Love all your great information on Avi! Just an fyi, the term "bassist" refers to someone who plays a bass guitar or a double base instrument. A bass singer is just a "bass." Thanks for sharing the genius of Avi... and tolerating my nit-picking! 🙂
