Finally finished this drama today after postponing it for months. I am devastated. This is one of the most tragic endings I've ever seen. But that is not the only thing that makes me feel sad, there is also the fact that a drama like that is one in a million and it will take some time to have some other masterpiece like that available again.
Every detail in the scenes, every light, color, clothes, piece of furniture, sound... Every word in their speech and every pause, face, smile, tear, everything counted in this drama. The technical part is just absurd, it is rare to find such photography.
I can just guess how difficult it was to filme this marterpiece but the result was clearly a success, close to perfection.
Congratulations to everyone involved and for me, now it is time to mourn Eugene Choi, a man who hated his birth country and when returned to it, found a new purpose for his life in that damned land.
    Just solidly beautiful.....

The fact that this movie is a sad movie is probably rooted in the fact that the takeover of Joseon by Japan was a tragic time. The depiction of the Japanese falls short of the reality. In reality, they Japanese were far more vicious than this show can portray. If you are not familiar with "The Rape of Nanking,' which was when the Japanese did the same thing to China in the 1930s, you would see how evil the Japanese really were. My guess is that the story was intentionally sad to speak to the atrocities that took place during this time because in other words, it is what it was, a very sad period in the history of Korea.

It is not only a really epic story, during the weeks that I took to watch it, I did spend some time doing parallel research. Having been a Marine for 8 years, I was of course well aware of the more recent Korean history, but I did not realize that Korea had come under Japanese occupation in the early 1900s. I also am well aware of the Rape of Nanking China (1937) and thanks to the missionary John Magee, who at great risk to himself, saved many Chinese and being an amateur photographer with a 16mm movie camera, he provided the world with proof of the incredible atrocities that the Japanese subjected the Chinese to, and knowing that, when I saw Mr Sunshine, I knew that as bad as they made the Japanese treatment of the Joseons, the could not come close to showing the full abuse the Japanese inflicted on the people of your country. Mr Sunshine was the best K Drama I have ever seen, and it is one of the best stories I have had the pleasure of enjoying ever. If you have not read about the rape of Nanking, if you read about it, you can get a much better understanding of what likely happened in Korea.

I believe, Aeshin herself symbolizes Joseon dynasty, and others trying to protect Joseon. but as you know, that period of time, so many people died/got killed trying to protect the country and I think thats what director wanted to tell us about. Because of all the sacrifices, Korea had our own independence day 😢 🥲🥲 Thank you for reviewing this drama!❤

    Kahla Monique
Kahla Monique
Kahla Monique

The sadness of this movie is really a faint echo of the horrible atrocities that were committed against the Joseon people by the Japanese and I think that this was the director's intention. If you have not read about the rape of Nanking China, which happened in the 1930s, reading about it will reveal how brutal the Japanese really were. It is a very sad movie, but the greater reality of what happened in the period covered by this wonderful drama is monumentally more saddening. The Japanese got off easy in the way they are portrayed in this movie.

    다른 하나는 당시 대한제국 황제였던 고종의 무능함을 미화했다는 내용이었어요ㅎㅎ;;

I just finished watching this drama. I am traumatized😥. I know historical dramas rarely go the viewer's way but this was too heartbreaking. Why? Just why did it have to end this way. There is no room for a twist. As sad as Moon lovers and Goblin were, there was a little room to imagine our ending. I am literally traumatized. The photographer did not have to die. Why?
