Hi Mambo, using the TGP you can momentarily lase the target for range to get the accurate coordinate, preventing the JDAM falling long. But as you said, aiming for the wheel will also get you there.
from what I learned while operating the A-10, I believe its the most correct way to do things (point + laser), I dont think targeting in area mode is even relevant, maybe for clusters, at the most.

Yes, JDAMs can do that sometimes unfortunately! Try to drop them more around the middle of the DLZ (dynamic launch zone), i.e the range cue on the HUD. Also, make sure to aim at the wheels/base of the target ;)

high impact angles seem to provide better accuracy as bombs don't do strange maneuvers just before impact that can throw it off course

I'm a precision kind of guy but when the SAMs are pinging my RWR and I don't have JDAMs to loft I have to skip the target.
Then just wait for the HARM guide ;)
JSOWs too, they're basically cluster JDAM glide bombs so they have an amazing range
