Repotting a San Pedro Cactus (Echinopsis Pachanoi) | Repot a Cactus

  • It has been 3 years and these San Pedro cactus are still in their nursery soil and pot. (oh no!!!!) LOL. The columns have grown tall and too close to each other. The time has come for me to face this difficult (those columns are heavy!) and tedious process of separating them and planting them in new soil and pot. Join me as I give these columnar cactus a new home.

    I enjoy your videos so much, you put a lot of effort into them and it shows. I live in central Mexico and about a year ago as I was driving on a local highway, when an 18 wheeler truck in front of me lost control and swerved off the highway and ran over several large Mexican Fencepost cactus (Pachycereus marginatus). I was so sad to see that happen, everyday when I passed that spot I would look at those poor cactus knowing that they were dying. It finally got the best of me and I decided to take a hand saw and see if anything could be rescued. Most of them were damaged beyond rescue but I did manage to cut 4 large cactus heads and bring them home. I let them dry heal for a few weeks and then re potted them just the way you did in this video. I kept my fingers crossed and during the winter I only watered them when the soil was completely dry to the touch. My hard work paid off, only one died and I now have three beautiful cactus that have each grown about 6 inches this summer. The head that died set pups and I was able to rescue them as well, so I now also have three babies about 4 inches tall.
    Thanks again for your great channel, I've learned a lot from you.

    I thought at first you would put them all in separate pots so I was surprised when you rejoined them.
    I thought you did amazingly well separating them from the nursery pot and how interesting when you hosed out old soil and eliminated the small weaker roots.
    Your final product with the lava rocks, and ground cover looks so pleasing to the eyes.
    I really enjoyed your efforts Ana.
    Hope you are well🌵☕🍻🌵

    root pruning is common procedure when repoting cacti and succulents. trim off the feeder roots, trim down to the secondary roots at least, trim down to primary roots if you must and never the tap root. but there are some exceptions for pruning tap roots such as to remove the last vestiges of a graft stock.

    Greetings! I came here for cactus content but subscribed cos of the coffee. I am Malaysian and the OldTown white coffee you shown originated from my hometown. It started off as a small and humble coffeeshop, before turning into a nationwide F&B franchise and selling their brand of instant coffee. So glad to see it receiving love around the world. I'm picky with instant coffee too, and they are one of my faves.
    I've only started being into plants a year ago. Now I stay in Singapore, in a high-rise apartment and I don't have land, not even a balcony. All my plants are grown indoors and I have a small cacti/succulent collection (13 and hopefully more to come). I'm picking up tips all over TH-cam, but I had to adjust the care requirements to our warm and humid climate here. I've definitely killed some due to overwatering, and I am now trying a more gritty mix and learning to water them less. Seems like they sometimes do thrive on neglect, haha
    Anyways, this was a great video, I like what you did with the rocks and small cacti at the end. looking forward to your next vids :)

      Wow, thank you for that little background info on my coffee. It is really very good for an instant coffee. Good luck on your cacti and succulent collection. Yes, sometimes too much love kills them and they prefer to be neglected at times. 😄🌵☕️

    You should cut one down and make a tea with it. Itll make you go through a deep self reflection and direction in life you want to go. And what changes you need to make.
    Dont worry though mescaline is very gentle like a grandfather. Its a warm masculine energy.

    Seen some conflicting video on repotting cactus. Some would water it right away while others advised not to water it.

  • @xjmzrq
    @xjmzrq 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Would you recommend watering them right away after repotting?? Or would it be better to wait and encourage the roots to seek water and grow???

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It is always best to give it a few days to let the roots heal before you introduce water in the soil. This prevents root rot.

    I'm getting ready to plant some San Pedro cuttings. I like how you arranged your pot. Do San Pedro like being with others in a pot or are they better alone? I enjoy your videos bcuz I love cactus!!!

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve seen them thrive either way, alone or in a clump. But if you keep them clumped in a pot, just note that San Pedro will grow tall and will have big root balls so the pot must be big enough to support them over time. 🙂

    I had this saved and only just now watched it. Did those lil cacti ever fill out the base?

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They did not fill it yet. They grow slower than I expected. But whenever pieces of the Fragilis fall off, I always add it in the pot. 😊

      @CactusCaffeine Thanks for the update! That's the hard part of watching plant rescues and such; you have to wait for them to grow to see the results 🥹

    Hello Ana this is Beatriz from Miami! Tk you always for explaining so well and teaching so much! I have a question! When you repot and clean de roots with water to take the old soil you use soap and water, but not alcohol! I thought I saw you using cinnamon also in the roots but not alcohol!tks for your help you are always so generous!

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      When I washed off the soil, it was only water, no soap. After separating them, I sprinkled the roots with cinnamon powder to prevent fungus. I do not use alcohol when repotting. I only use them to treat mealy bugs, if I find some. 😃🌵☕️

    Nice big and healthy cactus! We've all left plants in nursery pots, for sure! It looks like a Home Depot trico? How long have you had this cactus? Happy growing!
