Australian Robins are Different!

  • Australian robins are different to American and European Robins. They are an entirely different species of bird.
    The European Robin belongs to the chat subfamily of the Old World flycatcher family.
    Scientific name: Erithacus rubecula
    The American Robin belongs to the Thrush family of bird species.
    Scientific name: Turdus migratorius
    Australian Robins belong to the family Petroicidae.
    The Scarlet Robin is endemic to Australia and its offshore islands.
    Scientific name: Petroica boodang
    The Red-capped Robin is also native to Australia but is found in drier regions across much of the continent.
    Scientific name: Petroica goodenovii
    Both female robins appear in this video. The first image is of the female Red-capped Robin with the caption "this is a girl". The second image is of the female Scarlet Robin.
    Australia is home to a number of other beautiful and exotic Robins, but all the images in our videos are only of birds which live on our property, "Ellenbrae".

    Hello my dear Friend. PS I come to let you know I've placed your channel in my features. Its really something big on the channel who is visited as its mine. So if you can do the same and its very good to do. PS And another advice to you short videos on your channel that are not open for comments place in some another list. None have no wish and time to deal with a videos that can't comment. So to make yourself better views or totally remove it or make another list a just for them. Greetings and nice wishes to you!

    • @wildhomevideos
      @wildhomevideos  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you very much for placing our channel in your features Lara. We really appreciate it, and your advice! We really know so little about how YT works and it is so nice of you to share your knowledge with us. I will follow your advice and make a features list on our home page, but I will need a little time to learn how to do it and select which channels should go on there. Yours of course will also be featured. I know it is not the same as when a big channel like yours does it, but at least it will be a gesture of appreciation. Lara, we both totally agree with you about the disabled comments on the orchid videos, but this advice we can not take. You see, all the footage on our channel is only from our property, the reason for this restriction is because we wish to show, by example, how much life can exist on a relatively small area of land. Most people think that pollution is the biggest contributor to extinction, but actually it is loss of habitat. You probably know that, but most people don't. Forty acres of our property is registered as a voluntary sanctuary, this is where the orchids are filmed. When we have enough videos of them they will be featured with that organisation. Although it is a handicap at present it will make sense in the future. Thank you very much for watching our videos and all your advice. You are actually our first and only tutor, and we are very grateful. Thank you!

    • @wildhomevideos
      @wildhomevideos  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Welcome new friend. Your interesting comment and support is very much appreciated. It is however a little more complicated, than that. The European robins are part of the flycatcher family but the Australasian robins are not. The Australasian robins belong to the bird family Petroicidae which includes 49 species and are endemic to Australasia which includes Australia, New Zealand, New Guinea and some Pacific Islands. But then it gets more interesting. The Scarlet robin is only found in Australia which does include the Australian island state Tasmania but nowhere else. And The red capped robin is only found in the drier regions of the Australian mainland. Not even in Tasmania. That is why those two robins are known as Australian robins.

    👍 #69 Hello there my friend, I adore your Robins and they are indeed hugely different from others, especially the European Robins I see in the U.K. I love the colorful male perching in the open, obviously to attract a mate, despite the risk of predation from raptors etc. you captured some great scenes and edited them together well. Thank you, as always. 👍◕‿◕

    Wow, it's been a while since I've been here!
    Those Aussie robins are beautiful, and that is some amazing shooting. Nothing warms my heart like a songbird with the most vibrant oranges you can imagine. Around here it's a Baltimore Oriole, I've yet to see a camera that can do the color any justice.

      That is a really nice comment😊Actually I am not really thrilled about the footage of the red capped robin but those guys just won't let me come close so I didn't have much to choose from. They are really tiny compared to your big bruisers. If they tried to eat a worm it would look like they are wrestling with an anaconda. They should not really be called Robins as they are a completely different species. But then American ones aren't really Robins either....These homesick European settlers..."New" York, "New" England....what can you do? Thank you for your lovely comment Busters Pal😊

      Of course as I am sure you know, the only real Robins are the European Robins. When the Europeans spotted any bird with a reddish chest during their travels it automatically became a Robin. That aside, I think Australia is home to the most colourful robins in the world. We even have a Pink Robin! Seriously that is the most beautiful Robin of all. Unfortunately it lives about 4'000 km from us, but look it up, tell me if I am wrong. Thank you for your lovely comment Cathy😊

      I agree with you. I think in Australia there are more varieties of these birds we call Robins than anywhere else. There are all sorts of colours. The Yellow Robin is also quite pretty but the most pretty Robin in the world is the Pink Robin. Yes Pink. Just like candy. Unfortunately there are not many of them. But then, they are not the same species as your robins, so it is not a fair comparison😁

    The colors of those feathers just light up its surroundings. What a gorgeous Robin species ! And those "dance moves" were fantastic. Your Robin story was filled with humor and great info.The filming was superb, really showing off the bird's glory. I was totally smitten until the end... Think I fell in love with each one of your Australian Robins.

    The colours of the males are so vivid and the patterns eye catching.
    Must take some patience to capture video of such a small and speedy bird.
    I’ve watched many of your videos now and the camera rotation around the wildflowers is pleasing. The information captions you add provide interesting context.
    Thanks for your efforts.

      Those robins nest near our house so we get to see them a lot. Sometimes they get curious and come close to have a look at what is going on, and sometimes I guess they just get tired and can't be bothered to fly away. The camera has a 20X optical zoom which helps!

      In Australia we have many different kinds of Robins. My favourite is the Pink, yes bright candy pink. All our videos are only from plants and animals which were filmed on our property and unfortunately we don't have any pink robins in our area. But if you google the Pink robin I guarantee you will be amazed. Thank you for visiting and your nice comment😊👍

      I know what you mean Becca. Quite a few people seem to know the story of the early settlers naming the American Robin after the European Robin, but apart from that, people in general (at least in Australia) seem to take it for granted that Robins are the same species with minor differences around the world. I have often wondered whether it would be an interesting project if other wildlife channels would also make a video with the same title, like "American Robins are Different" etc and each channel providing links to the other ones. I suppose that a super channel like yours would not gain much with a collaboration like that, and it probably wouldn't make any significant difference to the views of the other channels, but it would be interesting. Do you think the idea has merit?

    Thank you very much for the wonderful video and the interesting information about your Robins! They are very different to our European Robins and so beautiful and colourful. It's really interesting how different they are all over the world.

      @wildhomevideos  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yea me too! Unfortunately the pink ones are not in WA where we live. The pink ones are my favourite but second to that I really like the Red-caped Robin. They are such gorgeous little guys but quite shy and not easy to film. You know Maggie, your comment is quite unusual, we really love our little Robins and it sounds like you do too, but most people are not really interested. Hey Maggie, you got a minute? I'd like to share something with you. I think it will make you smile😊 We published a video 46 seconds long. It is called Robin with a "Red Cap". Just watch it to the end and let us know what you think. If it doesn't make you smile I will buy you a coffee

      This robin only exists in some drier parts of Australia. We have several nesting on our property because we are on the edge of a dry region. That is why we have both the Red-capped and the Scarlet Robin which prefers the wetter regions and is more common. Thank you very much for your interest 😊
