Interesting to hear you say it's intermittent. I found this while looking to solve my 2009 forester noise issue. VHF on my FT 8800 can be zero one minute then S7 or greater 2 minutes later. UHF never has an issue. Thanks for the reality check video. Lots of bonding ahead it looks like for me!

Yes I bonded everything I could even the exhaust too. It helps a lot. Great video. Keep it up.

I’ve been fighting with RFI on my Jeep for a while. It’s almost a lost cause unless you want to sleeve every single wire and build a fariday cage around every single electrical component. I can’t even get a quiet set of spark plug wires. I ended up modifying a set of aircraft spark plug wires they are the only ones that actually are designed with RFI suppression in mind. Every single aftermarket wire I’ve tried including some that claim to have zero RFI is noisier than the OEM ones, and they were bad enough! Unfortunately without being able to run aircraft spark plugs and magneto caps you lose some of the RFI suppression that aircraft plug wires offer. I ended up giving up on mobile HF. I’m still having RFI problems with 2 meter FM. These modern cars are an absolute disaster when it comes to RFI.

any update on your efforts? what year make model? I have a 2011 3.8 JKU im hunting down RFI from the ignition im trying to solve.

@@murphybarrera3170 I have basically the same car mines a 2010 3.8 2 door manual transmission. The thing is an RF firehose! I got the ignition system quiet but literally everything else in it is spewing out RFI. I’ve given up on HF, but I’ve gotten it good enough for VHF/UHF radio. Other then the ignition system the TPMS system is very noisy but it can be shut off and the sensors can be removed from the wheels. I don’t have the time or motivation to chase down every single source of RFI, the TIPM (under hood fuse box) seems to be a big source of RFI, everything is canbus and every wire is unshielded so it acts as an antenna. There is substantially more RFI when the vehicle is moving then when it’s stopped with the engine running. The worst RFI is road speed related so I’m assuming it’s probably coming form the ABS wheel speed sensors and the related wiring and module. Being a manual transmission car there isn’t much else, however if yours is an automatic then you are going to have a lot more potential sources of road speed related RFI!

Great work. I didn't see it, but did you connect the radio base to the chassis wth strap too?

    • @KB1HQS

I did connect the radio to to the car chasis with a bonding strap. Seemed overkill, but considering what I was trying to accomplish I was willing to try anything. 73

Nicely done video… We have a 2017 Subaru Forrester which usually only contains a VHF UHF rig. I have tried it with the FT 991 and my ATAS 120 - But only sitting in the driveway with the engine running. However, since the 991 is not really a mobile rig since it does not have a detachable faceplate like my old FT 857D, I really have not operated true HF mobile yet with this car driving down the highway. (Too bad that I sold the 857D before buying the car.) I wonder what year your Outback is? Again thanks for a well done video! 73 Robert K3RRR

My outback is a 2012. The new Forrester's are really nice. I sat in one a couple of months ago and really liked it. Thanks for the video feedback! 73 Stu

@@KB1HQS oh I am very pleased i couldnt stand it any more 9dbs of noise now i can talk thank goodness for that common mode filter too that taken 99 percent out and bonding was important. now my mobile shuts off street lites i guess i have 100 percent going out........ my next mobile im doing will have 3 antennas. i don't run a lot of power i do it with antennas and location and ive been successful. any ways i will post videos when im done with my mobile it will take some time to put every thing in it I have spent about 3 years buying equipment for the new set up. it will be very interesting for sure. 73's

Where are you connecting power? How/where is the base of the radio mounted?

How about adding a few of these static discharge grounding straps under the car? Maybe that would help. If you try it let us all know if it works: Gates 90330 Anti Static Rubber Strap, 25" Length x 1-1/16" Width www.amazon.com/dp/B009SEJDXE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_EKqbAb61C6DNM

Great minds think alike. I did try that last year and found it made no difference. What a bummer.

I'm not doing all that work without an after video shot. The before was only a few seconds.

new cars and trucks are tough so bonding is important when it comes to our radios.
