Y’know watching this TAS in particular has made me realise just how many bosses in Mania make you wait a long time for their hurt boxes to appear. Some of it I can excuse like the Mirage Saloon Act 1 fight, but a lot of them are just massive time sinks. Great run regardless though.
Agreed. Bosses are one of the weakest aspects of Sonic Mania, and some I would call outright bad (including studiopolis act 1's mini-boss, as someone has already pointed out) The rest of the game is, IMO, so strong that Sonic Mania is overall an amazing game. But this aspect was a real drag.
I wonder if a future platform game would consider splitting the time bonuses into two... one for the level (stops when you reach the boss), which contains the bulk of the time bonus, and one for how long it takes you to destroy the boss. That way if you think you can get to the end in under a minute, you're rewarded a nice bonus for your trouble even if the boss is a drag. Speaking of... one complaint I have is that the time bonus values are based off those in Sonic 1 and Sonic 2, where you get 50,000 for getting under 30 seconds, which isn't practical for Sonic Mania since the zones are much bigger, plus of course the bosses. In Sonic 3 and Knuckles, you get said bonus for completing it in under 1:00 instead. (Although in Mania, you still get 100,000 points if you finish the act in 9:59).
I absolutly love how when the tas Can't speed up a part of the level it just shows off, like in Mirage saloon act 1 where it beats the plane part without jumping
It’s a shame nobody has found a way to speed up the first Robotnik fight in Hydro city. It could be great for time saves, like the Vault Skips in Portal.
