What I really love about this trap is that there's virtually no blood. No blood, no gore, no chopping off limbs, no burning people alive, just pure and simple terror. It goes back to the psychological thriller elements that were in the first two movies that they really forgot about in the later ones.
I always love tobin bell's commentary on these behind the scenes clips because he wrote a lot of his own lines especially towards the end he would just tell the writers "My character wouldn't say this." He clearly loves his work and this film series.
I always wondered how they did this trap safely, without drowning the actor. Turns out they did actually just drown him a little bit over and over. Mad props to that guy. Even with the safety team right there it's got to be terrifying.
I nearly drowned when I was little and I can STILL feel the fear and pain to this day, 17 years later. I cannot imagine how Scott was able to do this! Cheers to him
Okay just to get everyone's question out of the way. "Why can't he just drink the water?" Well, because it's WAY too much. You would get water intoxication. Just because it has the word "Toxic", doesn't mean the water is actually poison. Its a potentially fatal disturbance in brain functions that results when the normal balance of electrolytes in the body is pushed outside safe limits by over-hydration.
It's kinda hard breaking the glass, but tracheotomy is the best choice if you were "trained professional" because if you hit the wrong spot in the neck, you'd be dead.
This was by far the coolest trap in the entire film, probably in the entire series. Scott Patterson did a damn good job acting that fear in it, just absolutely fucking terrifying. So damn cool to see the development process and even to hear Tobin Bell be impressed by it.
I have no idea how can Scott Patterson sit with those huge balls of his. Easily the most terrifying moment in the entire Saw series; he deserves credit for doing this scene.
My greatest respect to Scott Patterson! That's one of the many reasons he became one of my favorite actors. He did such a great job in this role, played a great character. It still upsets me that they really wastet such a great actor and character for shock value. Agent Strahm should have been around for much longer in my opinion.
Loooooooooooooove Scott Patterson. I was so happy when I found out he was going to be in a Saw movie! My favorite horror franchise and one of my favorite male actors!
Loool. That was great to watch. Unfortunately by Saw 5, Jigsaw is long dead and If he did make a trap a person had a clear(but not easy) way of escaping. This trap was made by Mark Hoffman the detective who is Jigsaws apprentice at this point, and also notorious for making unescapable traps.
You cannot drink the water to escape this trap. It's a plausible thing to accomplish depending on the speed of the pouring water and it's amount. But otherwise it's impossible. Your body cannot handle it. It is possible to overdose on water. It has been done and people have died from it. The human bladder has a capacity of about 16 to 24 ounces of urine. Yet the urge to urinate comes when the bladder is about one-quarter full. The bladder can stretch a few inches, but in this case, it is not enough. Considering how this trap has two large water jugs with water over four times (guessing) the amount the human bladder can endure, and the speed it was filing the trap, it would not be possible to drink the water and survive.
What I love most about this is Tobin Bell's speech. I can 100% imagine Jigsaw saying this to Hoffman when he was pitching the trap to him. (Though I'm unsure who actually designed it)
Oh my god, guys, NO, drinking the water would have not allowed him to survive, because HE WOULD HAVE RUN OUT OF AIR BEFORE HE HAD TIME TO DRINK IT ALL. By the time it reached his mouth there was already too much. Go stick your head in a bathtub, start drinking, and see how long you last without lifting your head. YOU NEED MORE AIR FASTER THAN YOU'D BE ABLE TO SWALLOW ALL THE WATER NECESSARY TO FREE YOURSELF- not to mention that if he drank too much too quickly he might just throw it right back up. The only thing worse than drowning in water would be drowning in your own vomit.
transpinestwins It’s not just that but even if he somehow managed to drink enough fast enough to keep it under his nose he would die of water intoxication. Too much water can kill you.
stick your head in the dirty bathtub with water? sure! *drinks bath tub water while trying to breathe and live* *dies because of drowning and water contamination*
Serial killer David Parker Ray was kinda jigsaw like. He kidnapped girls and when they woke up in his trailer a tape was played for them describing what kind of torture was going to be done to them
The whole saw franchise is insaneee the traps the actors the extent the actors went thro just for one scene these franchises are seriously misjudged and underrated
I love the whole aspect of this kinda thing, it's really interesting. I wish A level drama was more learning about this sort of thing.. it's incredibly clever, yet so simple.
Problem with drinking the water would be that your body can only take up a certain amount of fluid over a certain period of time,(age and body size dependent, your body can hold around 4 litres) if the amount is exceeded your innards would burst. Bare in mind that 4 litres would probably cause strain in respiration. The issue is that either way Scott Patterson can only hold his breath for a short amount of time, definitely not long enough to take up so much fluid. Supposedly he would've pissed himself before his innards burst, but he'd most likely drown first. Then again, the producer wouldn't really wanna' be framed for manslaughter would he? Film-wise, the water could've been contaminated, so Agent Strahm would've died inevitably if he drank the water. I think that they played the trap well; slightly dangerously, but that's typical for Saw after all, no?
I don't understand how the pen in throat (tracheotomy) could have saved him in this case? When he draws in air through the pen, he'll also take in water through his nostrils. Tracheotomy would've worked, if his nostrils and mouth were sealed.
***** No, It can't work! It could work if his nostrils were sealed, but that wasn't the case, so in the same exact moment he breaths, considering the pressure you need to create to inspire air from such a small way like the pen, before the air, the first thing that will come in is the water from the nostrils. So he'd drown either way. So this entire scene is shit, unfortunately. (Sorry for my english)
it can work, but you have to use your tongue to block the upper part of the trachea ( i mean where you throat and trachea are starting) so this way when you try to inhale you cannot cause you blocked it with your tongue, so if you have a hole in the lower part of the trachea that will provide enough pressure to breathe trough it. You can try it, pull your tongue back and try to breathe in
No. It works. Your mouth and nose are the main source of your breathing. It's what gets air to and from your lungs. But when those were cut off, he made ANOTHER spot for his lungs to get air in and out. The hole in his neck. It's very very possible. Trust me. And considering that the new home he made was below the main ones, all he did was make the pathway of breathing in and out, shorter. It's not like his nose was in the middle, between the new hole and his lungs. Then it wouldn't have worked. But he just shortened the path. Think of it as a ball going back and forth on a path. There's two walls, one in each end to keep the ball going back and forth. Imagine they stuck an extra wall between the two, making the pathway shorter. That's the same with breathing. His lungs are breathing on their own with that hole in his throat. The water is above the path, not in the middle of it. Water only fills your lungs once you've passed out. But he was still awake, able to hold his breath keeping the water out of his nose.
Tobin Bell: "As I *SAW* the trap and all this, it was just *BREATHTAKING* " Me: _actually recognized with a bit of fear why they've chosen Tobin for being John_
One of the questions I always asked myself was, why not "destroy" the rubber at the bottom of the box? Or at least use the fingers to open some space so the water could actually leave the box. It's rubber so it shouldn't be impossible to use it to your advantage... And if someone say there isn't enough space, then how did the head get in the box? I'm always baffled how movie characters are never able to think of simple solutions to avoid death or injury...
nodlimax it's tight enough to hold in an amount of water that has a lot of weight. I would guess that in the movie it's not rubber so it's probably metal or a combo of rubber and metal to create suction. also, since it is a tight enough seal to hold so much water, the suction is way too strong to break with the fingers or even the pen.
And no, he could not have "just pissed it out". Everything you eat has to actually pass through your stomach and intestines etc. before you shit it out, so your body can absorb the nutrients/excess water/separate out the waste. It's not like it happens immediately. He's a human being, not a funnel.
I'm surprised that there wasn't any malfunctions (like a leaking hose, the water jugs falling, or the actor passing out), still awesome seeing how this was created
Aidan C Well when they were done shooting a part of the whole trap or when the actor gave an "Warning I'm drowning, GET ME OUT OF HERE!" signal about 4 or 5 came to empty the thing so I guess that's the emergency drain button
Maybe because it's hard to watch some scenes? I know for me I have to watch the needle scene through behind the scenes considering I'm scared to death of needles

It would add a disgusting factor, but take away from the scare. Half of the effect is seeing the actor trapped in the water, unable to breathe.
