you admire this guy for how he plays. then you love him for who he is. I'm not into guitar but watched the whole clinic just because of his kindness. Bravo.
When my wife was pregnant with my daughter I was learning alot of petrucci's stuff and now she's born its hilarious she could be screaming the house down and I start playing any of it no matter how heavy or clean she settles and 9 times out of 10 falls asleep 🤣🤣
Nice guy guitar god John Petrucci pauses in the middle of his arpeggio demonstration and says "bless you" to the person that sneezed without missing a note.
I think this John petrucci clinic is awesome I have watched this video numerous amount of times thanks for sharing it and letting me and other people see it appreciate it
Any skilled guitarrist can play this stuff. But JP actually came up with these ideas and was able to translate them to the guitar. There are few today who can come up with such nice compositions. Most can only play scales and execute techniques up and down. My favorite composers: Buckethead, John Petrucci, Jason Becker.
I have a 3 hr. dvd that I filmed with my Sony Handycam of John's first ever "Massachussetts Guitar Center (across the street from Berklee College) Clinic" in the 1990's. I was the only one filming on this particular day. He showed us all photos he had of his then very young children , too. Good time. Great clinic.
Dream theatre is one of the most boring bands I’ve ever heard and seen play live, but I love watching Petrucci play and be interviewed. His solo albums are better than anything else he’s done and he seems like a cool dude
I am in total agreement. What a gracious, kind, talented and friendly guy, kind of has an infectious positive spirit. But yeah, I have tried with Dream Theater and I cant get into it, the singer is not my cup of tea. Somehow I really like their compatriots in the band FATES WARNING, similar to theater yet somehow doing it in a way that resonates with me.
Not a guitar player, but this was a pleasure to watch. Seems like such a genuine dude. Hope I get to meet him someday, and not just in a "I'm a fanatic, please sign my shit" sort of way.
I am always respect to John Petrucci because he is humble nor Dream Theater are "alien" musician, all Dream Theater members is humble, that is deferences with other band!
Cool footage! I was at the Southfield Michigan Guitar Center seminar and they expressly forbid pics and vids - to the point where they warned they would throw people out if they saw them filming. So they either didn't care here, or you did a great job of filming on the down low. : )
John petrucci you are a master on the guitar to play those songs are all so good John as a mega star and legend with the music that you play it is all about the timing and the fans dreamtheather stills lives on in you John the songs that you play on the speed and the power that is all inside you as a fan of dream theater and I play guitar as well but you John are an amazing person to play those songs maby I can see you on tour some day and John petrucci rock hard and be careful with this virus okay for the band and for the your family and friends to Alex
John petrucci your speed and hand control is very good but you are the best all ready remember John petrucci music is a gift for every won to see and hear to be able to play those songs just play it cool okay alex
I personally like John's JP and Majesty tone MUCH better than his JPM tone. The Ibanez sounded so generic. Sharp edges, nasal mids, and tight low end. The tight low end would be nice if it wasn't achieved through making the low end thinner and more fragile. Just my opinion. But my taste, I've come to notice, isn't everybody else's taste.
I'm not dissing Ibanez. In fact, the favorite guitar that I have is an Ibanez. I'm just saying that, for what he does and the sound he strives for, Ibanez is probably not the best option.
I was there! This clinic was awesome, and Petrucci was/is such a cool dude. So glad I finally got to meet him! The Archivist Thanks for posting this, but any chance of posting the entire clinic? Having both Dance of Eternity and Enigma Machine is great, but I'd like to hear all the questions that were asked, not to mention having him go into depth about the Majesty guitar and the Ernie Ball strings. If possible, I'd like to see the entire clinic uncut!
"My goal is to come up with things that sound fun but are easy to play on the guitar." John Petrucci 2014. Millions of guitarists subsequently plan their suicides.
The way this guitar was built, JP and musicman wanted to have a bunch of sounds which have more range compared to the previous EBMM models. But then, what he uses is INCOMPARABLE to those Ibanez JPMs he had in the 90's.
kigawman Ibanez were much cooler, both looking + playing, and sounding. Too bad they couldnt afford his endorsement asking price any longer. Then again look how he sold out Portnoy so he could take more of the publishing and have full creative/production control. Money changes people. Look how he carried himself back in 94 and look now. Still a cool guy but obviously a millionaire.

Of course the hard as shit thing he's playing at any given time requires him to make a cringed face on stage to make it actually *_seem_* hard for him, for "showbiz effect", lol. I know he's _sort of_ joking, but I think deep down we all really know the truth just slipped out a little. Everything he plays is easy for him, but to make him appear human, he has to fumble around and make it seem really hard, lol. Dude's a legend.
Me, too, along with my 12 year old son. He got his stealth black JP50 signed below the bridge in silver marker. We also got two picks from John at the end of the Dream Theater show at the Paramount. #bestdayever
Petrucci seems like a very nice guy, and he has both technique and ideas and all that and I kinda dig what dream theater does. Yet I always get a bit bored somehow after a short while. I think it's the partly the amount of symmetric scalar stuff and a feeling of pre-set, prearranged chops and techniques being mapped onto a grid in a deliberate way that can sometimes come across a little contrived or willed. Maybe it's just a sense of spontaneity and impredictability that I am missing. I don't know. ... and to a particular segment of people out there - No I do not have to be able to play like him to have that opinion and no critique or opinion is not the same as jealousy and derision.
I get what you´re saying. It´s just his phrasing. Sometimes it sounds a bit "linear" if that makes sense with you. At least to my ears. Great player nonetheless.
@@robertnagel3972 “Spontaneous stuff” has structure too. Some things that seem very offhand can be very deliberate. Lots of complexly structured music does not necessarily immediately come across as such because the structure is a means to an end and thats whats up front. It’s always a risk with elaborate prog stuff that it can end up sounding a bit forced or contrived in it’s desire to cover diverse ground. The impulse to explore various somewhat formal complexities mainly in terms of a structural element can end up NOT sounding like the meandering journey is looking for something, but either thought it out from the start in a mainly logical organiserly way from the start or simply stacked different elements to exploit affinity or contrast at the local level of the individuel transitions between segments. I guess it’s the sometimes tangible, building block feel that can bore me, because the fact that a brick is a brick and can work as a brick, in terms of composition draws focus to just the individual “brickness” of it rather than the overall flow, if the structure is more like the showcasing or curating of a series of pretty or interesting bricks laid in order. That’s a style trait too of course, just one that I personally can get a bit bored with eventually. There is a symmetric rigidity to it, like architecture insisting on casting itself as architecture rather than serving whatever overall purpose it was going to serve.
