Im a plasterer by trade :) IRL you dont need that mesh over the brick you only need mesh if the substrate isnt masonary, when it is masonary the mud sticks right to the brick and its not going anywhere, the mess wont hurt im sure but it's not really necessary, also not sure how authentic you wanna get but plasterers use different mud than masons or brick layers, our mud has a super fine sand in it compared to masonary mud, thats what gives the walls a finished look different from like just poured concrete
