I was raised in a trailer park and I had a wonderful teacher in HS that let me know, I am important. I have always struggled, but it is mainly with my own self doubt. I have a very similar story to yours. I am today a proud Mother of 3 and Grandmother of 3. Retired nurse and work PT in a Grocery store. I love my life and time with all my family.
Years ago a Scottish football coach got fed up with his well paid players complaining about being "stressed and fatigued" so one day he took them all to a building site and had them transporting bricks to the bricklayers for six hours (the usual hod carriers got paid to just watch). At the end he called them together and told his players that the guys they replaced did that five or six days a week for between eight to ten hours per day on one fiftieth of their money and had to pay rent, bills and feed their kids. I gather the whinging stopped.

I finally reached that point with my family. jail, drugs, drama....luckily I did military...MBA, entrepreneur, Real Estate, Yoga teacher, live 5k miles away and thank God! Dysfunction and ignorance are death. I never knew life would turn out this way, but we gotta take care of ourselves! Therapy and sobriety have helped ALOT!
I love my family, but there is a reason I didn't move up north with my dad when my parents got divorced. I can go to college where I am, but if I went up to the small rural town with him I would have had a nicer family life, but there are zero opportunities around there to make enough money to be comfortable. Down south I go to college for a Stats degree in the city near where I can get connections and make money. I don't need a ton, just enough for a decent house, a backyard, and enough internet to watch what I want when I want.
Imagine you made it out of the trailer park on your own after being abused by the step dad, and now your grown up adult kids that you provided for a life like they are the Kardashians, dont speak to you anymore because you left an unhappy marriage after some 20 years.
Coming from a dysfunctional family myself I feel him on this. I cut my whole family off, BEST decision I ever made. It's survivor's guilt I'm dealing with but there's no way I'm going back.

It was good to hear his take on family. I've felt bad avoiding some family for years because I only hear from them when they need money. I help but don't get around to that part of the country and swallow in their poverty. I once was asked to find a lawyer for their divorce while I was already.paying utilities and their trailer rent. Couldn't go their then because it never stopped. Most times when the money stops, there contact with me stopped.
If you enable dependency, then their dependence on you will continue. U honor yourself and others by allowing people to arise and conquer their own problems and disappointments. It’s nothing wrong with helping, we all need help from time to time, but enabling dependency is another crutch.
I have family that are the same way. It's hard to cut ties but it is for the best, not just for you but them also. Enabling just perpetuates the cycle.
