Hong kongers don't care about Singapore either to be honest. I didn't know about Singapore until recently, when President Xi said Singapore is a inseparable part of China.
While it is interesting to compare the 2 economies to see who is in the lead, it is like comparing whether China would overtake USA as the largest economy in the world. Singapore, like China, needs to grow the economy, not because they want to come out tops, but more to ensure more of its citizens can achieve a higher standard of living. Singapore's benchmark is not whether it can beat Hong Kong, but more likely how many of its citizens can earn enough to have a good standard of living. Not forgetting, the citizens of Singapore can vote the government of the day out, but Hong Kong cannot.
Hong Kong is a gateway for Chinese companies go oversea while Singapore is a Southeast Asian hub, more international than Hong Kong. Moreover, manufacturing industries in Singapore are even better due to huge foreign investment on semiconductor, pharma, petrochemical while Hong Kong let nearby cheaper Chinese provinces made everything.
SG gov + citizens care about SG's prosperity, making comparisons just for others which are not the key for SG. There are tons of listing all over the world, SG has seen too many such listing and it really means nothing now. Survival with low profile, please. Viola.
Singapore has never benchmarked with HK. Knowing our resources is limited, and we don’t have a big backing like China, it has wracked every brain cell and ounce of energy to continue to stay ahead of the unforeseen. Decades ago, Hong Kongers laughed at SG govern being a grandfather to its people (and Singapore are equipped to ignorant children, taking orders obediently), dictating everything, there was no space for business to manoeuvre and flourish. Instead Singapore humbly continues to work on its limitations for the best outcome. Careful with every policy implementation, evaluate, and continue to fine-tuned, and listen to its people. This strict practice started from the Founder LKY and his cabinet. Perseverance pays off. But never too proud, because we remind ourselves, we are a small nation. A Little Red Dot on the map, got to press on to stay afloat. In actual fact, Singapore takes advantage of its strength, help to negotiate trade deal for ASEAN, sell the strength of ASEAN, encourage foreign investments and trade transaction. This is because Singapore understands, only when its neighbours and region progresses, Singapore will benefit from it as a regional hub. And constantly plays a role to mediate peace in ASEAN over geopolitics matter. We understand it will never survive without good bi-lateral relationships in trade. Let’s just put it this way, Singapore and Singaporeans have too many things in the plate to compare with HK, but to work along side with its neighbours (ASEAN).
Singapore never overtook Hong Kong in any way. We just care about our own prosperity and growth. There is no need to compete with Hong Kong. Hong Kong only depends on China wholesomely while Singapore diversifies her dependency and source of income for growth. That is the difference.
This is a very singapore view that thinks HK only depends on China. When I go to SG, taxi drivers always brag about how China kept saving HK… If you look at the array of businesses here and the stock market, it tells a different story.

Not quite right... Singaporeans seems to be brainwashed by its government propaganda that it was a fishing village under the British. On the contrary, it was a thriving economy at its times. Whether Singapore could stay on course of prosperity when the Lee families phase out from the political arena remains to be seen. Taiwan experienced dramatic changes after Chiang's families finished ruling Taiwan. Having said that, I believe Hong Kong and Singapore are tales of two cities where each is at the best of times.

Don't be so sensitive, it's a forgiveable mistake. It's exactly because of China sensitivity towards Hong Kong, Taiwan etc, now all over the world has to call it country/region. The world isn't like this few decades ago
This is exactly true when a lot of Chinese when leaving their comfort zone, China, hearing people referring Taiwan as country easily get agitated and literally "explode". Relax...
Im not so interested in this obsessive comparison between Singapore and Hong Kong. Its not a zero-sum game and if one prospers, it doesn't mean the other is doing badly. Moreover, yes, both sides have similarities but they also have big differences if one cares to take a closer look. For one, Singapore is an independent, sovereign country whereas Hong Kong is part of China. Obviously the way either side manages their economy is dependent on some different considerations. For keen observers, you will know that Singapore and Hong Kong cooperates and collaborates on many levels too though this is often glanced over.
Why does China sometimes end up stifling innovation that’s released there? Take Google Glasses as an example-it didn’t catch on globally, and few people were willing to wear them, especially in China, where large stocks went unsold. How many people in China actually wore Google Glasses? Essentially none, apart from Google employees. Google stadia controller failed also. In Hong Kong’s previous laissez-faire capitalist system, unsuccessful prototypes like that could be abandoned quickly by big companies without significant loss. If you had an idea, like a mouse that could project a screen without needing a full computer, you could develop and test it freely. In a free-market system like Hong Kong’s, the government wouldn’t get in the way of innovation, asking only practical questions like, "How does it work?" A successful product would need no laptop, working like a mobile device that’s easy to carry. If Hong Kong were without laissez-faire capitalism, it would be a different story. The government might be bogged down debating, potentially clashing over decisions, much like the heated arguments in Taiwan’s parliament. In a communist system, officials might be wary of losing money on prototypes that fail, without the flexibility of a true free market. The result? Less incentive to pursue risky or novel ideas.
