Singapore, like China, needs to grow the economy, not because they want to come out tops, but more to ensure more of its citizens can achieve a higher standard of living. Singapore's benchmark is not whether it can beat Hong Kong, but more likely how many of its citizens can earn enough to have a good standard of living. Not forgetting, the citizens of Singapore can vote the government of the day out, but Hong Kong cannot.
