- For those of us who live our lives in the real world, there is one branch of philosophy created just for us: Stoicism. It’s a philosophy designed to make us more resilient, happier, more virtuous and more wise-and as a result, better people, better parents and better professionals.
Stoicism has been a common thread through some of history’s great leaders. It has been practiced by Kings, presidents, artists, writers and entrepreneurs. Marcus Aurelius. Frederick the Great, Montaigne, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Adam Smith, John Stuart Mill, Theodore Roosevelt, General James Mattis, -just to name a few-were all influenced by Stoic philosophy.
So what is Stoicism? Who were the Stoics? How can you be a Stoic? Bestselling author Ryan Holiday answers all your questions and more in this video.

After graduating, I faced a huge fear of unemployment, letting it cast a shadow over my achievements. Discovering Stoicism changed my outlook. I learned to flow with life’s currents, embracing challenges as part of my journey. This philosophy didn’t just help me navigate the job market with more peace; it transformed how I view life’s ups and downs. Now, I see each challenge not as a setback but as an opportunity to grow. Stoicism taught me the power of perspective and the strength we gain from facing our fears head-on.

Stoicism helped me find solutions to my problems in many areas of my life.. This is the power of high valuable knowledge.
Which should be the first book that I should read?
@@PankajSharma-fx5egHow to be a Stoic by Massimo Pigliucci
@@PankajSharma-fx5eg I started with the Daily Stoic book - and then started reading wider from there. I am sure others will have done it other ways. (also sign up for the Daily Stoic email from Ryan).
Glad to hear that.
@@PankajSharma-fx5eg The Practicing Stoic by Ward Farnsworth is the first book I read on stoicism and is a great introduction in my opinion.
Finding stoicism helped save my life, and has made me a more relaxed and successful person for it.
❤ Amazing keep following the teachings
Stoicism has a unique way of grounding us and providing clarity in the chaos. It’s wonderful that it has brought such positive changes to your life, fostering both peace and success. Keep holding onto those principles; your journey is a powerful testament to the strength and tranquility that Stoicism can offer.
I love the shakespear quote, "there is neither good nor evil- thoughts, actions, and deeds create reality". It has a timeless sense of "manifesting & transcending your vision into reality."
👏👏
It's such a powerful reminder, isn't it? That quote beautifully captures the essence of how our perceptions shape our reality. By taking control of our thoughts and actions, we indeed have the power to manifest our vision and transcend beyond the immediate circumstances. Shakespeare’s words, much like the teachings of Stoicism, encourage us to look within and realize our potential to create meaningful change in our lives. It’s all about embracing that power to craft our own narrative.
I see the need for journaling and handwrite, it really clears your mind. But I have a twist to it: once evaluated, analyzed etc. I ditch the page of the day. The following morning I will handwrite a new day, on a clean state. No need to keep the notes. This mentally removes clutter for me, my dailly agenda is only one page. To allocate activities in the future, I put them on Google calendar for months ahead, and computer notes app for week ahead, that can be consulted when required. But this way, it helps me really focusing on the day.
Cool Idea! It will help me, thank you
really needed this.... been a stoic for maybe 2 years coz of ur channel ryan!
i feel like my life has gotten more organised and easy to focus on things
thanks a lot ryan
Nice to find good stoic company - I am four and half years in, and enjoying life so much more.
Thank you Ryan, great job and awesome work. You have gotten me on the path of reading and Stoicism. Stoicism is the 12 steps of recovery but on steroids. And that is what I needed. I am currently reading Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield and am loving every minute of us. It puts into perspective just how easy our lives are, and how we have no excuse but to pursue Arete/Excellence/Virtue. I am just a blue collar local class A delivery driver for a major beverage company but practice excellence and virtue day in and day out. It is certainly working for me and enhancing my life experience. I have read Discipline is Destiny, Courage is Calling and Stillness is the Key. I just ordered Lives of the Stoics today and Mastery by Greene. Keep up the awesome work Ryan, you are a great teacher/mentor. -Grant in San Diego
Probably my favorite channel now. I feel like my personality lines up with stoicism but finding this channel and philosophy has opened my eyes and made my life so much better. Nothing bothers me anymore😎
Thank you Ryan! Your perspectives on Stoicism have been so beneficial to me and Stoicism has encouraged me to make sure I also give back.
Needed this, thank you.
It's keeps getting better, Stoicism can sharp the way to resolve issues of life !
zooming out is really a nice practice!!!
I started 3 years ago with Daily Stoic!!
my dad made me read the meditations when I was 6 one of my favourite books since
Thank you Ryan. ❤
The obstacle is the way
Beautiful motivation❤❤❤
I found this channel and although I don't consider myself a stoic I find this motivating more than anything. This is something I want to show to my father to motivate him as I have been.
thank you Ryan
I love your work!!!
Outstanding Ryan

I wonder if Jesus was a Stoic. His beautiful Teaching seems to be Stoic Teaching…love, compassion, patience, understanding…
No, He was not. He was and is the Son of God. He preached Gospel and word of God, which are not any philosophy.
@@ЄвгенПікуліцький Every religions has a kind of separated philosophy, you theorically cannot be fully christian and stoic at the same time but only partly
Well if you really look into it we found out that cristianity has absorbed dozens and hundreds of small religions, philosophies and rites. I wouldnt be suprised to learn that stoicism was actively written into the bible.
@@ЄвгенПікуліцькийStoicism is a characteristic. One is not a stoic, one has stoic trates. Jezus definitely had many stoic traits in the bible.
The parallels are very similar the golden rule seems to something all of the stoics drew from doing good and right..
Great advice
Started reading Meditations about a month ago. Now reading while listening to Dies Irae in the background. You just completely remove yourself from reality and let it sink in and bring it back into reality.
Stoicism helped me calm my mind and also conquer alcohol abuse.
Awesome video, thank you!
It doesn't matter where you start. Only that you begin.

Loved the background music on this one
I just used zooming out recently. I'm not happy with my life's path, and feeling overwhelmed by course correcting. I had the thought, what if I died and just came back? This is my avatar to start with, what will I do? I zoomed out to look at myself like a 3rd person and things became much clearer and less emotionally charged.
Thank you so much.. 🙏
My therapist keyed me into this page, and I'm liking some of it, but other things are a bit harder to take. I've always been impressed by those who are unruffled by life's speed bumps and wished I could be more like that, but never could be for long when I tried. The one thing that sticks out to me from this is a question I imagine a lot of folks looking into stoicism face, which is if from the 10,000 foot view, from the 10,000,000 foot view, from the 10 light year view, nothing is as significant as it seems, then how can anything have any significance at all? My problems don't matter, my successes don't matter, my actions don't matter, so why do anything? How can you find the motivation to act if there is no impact or import of those actions?
Amazing stuff you r doing ❤

Heyy Ryan! I think we know too little about Zeno, the founder of stoicism. Everyone only talks about Marcus aurelius.
There is good and bad bro… God made us with a moral compass to know right and wrong and he gave us his Laws like do not murder… good law!!
We want a podcast with Ryan Holiday sir, and David goggins sir

Tony Montana’s thing was “the world is yours”, not “the world is not enough”.
The point is obviously well taken either way.
(Man. I should have just said nothing)
I heard you say you wouldn't show, and I'm guessing never publish your journals.
I too will never share my journals....But what if we pass on before we destroy them?
Did Marcus Aurelius not think this thru either?
When we're dead we won't care.
'Ants fighting over scraps of land'
Sheesh
How can you believe that something will come true while also preparing for it not to happen by making a backup plan. Wouldn’t that imply that you don’t believe something will come true??
What do u mean? Can u pls explain 😅

Not believe, but consider. To consider the possibilities not to believe that there is certainty.
@@CaraMyBeloved Yes. I much prefer that word "consider." I think Holiday just chose his word poorly
#8 Chubby Chaser? Check! 😂
8:30 except they didn't have nuclear bombs back then. So no, wars today are not the same and we can easily go beyond the point where things won't 'just work themselves out'
Adam Kinsinger. 🤣 He had to harness the power of stoics to remove his trauma of January 6th!🤣🤣🤣His twitter comments aren't that good because he's a damned liar!
Everything in this video is the exact advice Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) gave us too :).
At first I thought you were Davie504
i'd be stoic AF too if I were the goddamn emperor of the world, I'd call other people ants as well. He was born with such a big silver spoon in his mouth that he never had to achieve anything in life but he tried to practice being a human . Don't you think people who have what they want always give the advice that none of that matters? whereas people who have to work 100 hour weeks don't feel like giving righteous lectures. Something to think about.
Imagine a leader telling the poor - we're both gonna die so I am not gonna help, you can either work as a slave for me or leave
Really? Kinzinger?
This video was ruined by all the adverts.
Becoming an atheist, stoic has brought me to reality.
Why don't you tell people about your first book?
What's his first book?
Where to start with stoicism? Meditations. End of. Its not rocket science.
Wow. Watching a corrupt Democrat boast about how he ignored criticism hasn’t aged well. If this is Stoicism, count me out.
Ryan Holiday can't help himself. His politics creep in too frequently.
Thanks so much, Ryan.
