    Don't be sad.
    To possibly lose a ship is part of this beautiful hobby and essential for its inherent magic.
    Who knows in which adventure the air carried the brave cardboard pilot! Did he survive the turbulent flying weather? Where did he land? Will he ever be found or will he remain lost forever? Who knows!
    For my part, I am very, very grateful for your inspiring films - they literally give wings to my imagination.
    For me as a vintage plane pilot, your little works of art are as magical as the books of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.
    You make the world a little more beautiful for many people - thank you!

    Thx for all of the comments. I built the model for the FAC's celebration of the 100th anniversary of US Air Mail service. The Ryan was to the trim field three times, so I was pleased when she finally came into good trim. But the thermals were strong on the last day, and even though the DT popped after 90 seconds, she kept going. I followed her for over four minutes with the camera, before quickly running for my binoculars. Unfortunately, in the ten seconds that it took to run back to my van and grab the glasses, I could not relocate her...blame it on the reflective silver covering. I looked around the field for over 90 minutes with no luck. Eventually, thunder and lightning from the west chased me off the field. A sad, wonderful, disappointing, beautiful and memorable day. We can always rebuild, right? But yes, I didn't enjoy seeing a fine pair of Hungerfords and an older, working DT button fly away.

      How utterly beautiful. The tale of the model from planning & wood selection to it's final flight. I actually welled up reading the flyaway text 😢
      I sincerely hope that someone's given her a good home - FF/Rubber have been known to drift for fifteen miles + and if there was thunder and lightning around, you can bet your last dollar that the updrafts would've been monster size. I'm in the UK, but would love to fly FF over in the States in the good weather...

    • @crashrr2993
      @crashrr2993 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      maxfliart , I noticed in an earlier video of the Ryan that when the DT popped she didn't lose aerodynamic stability and stop flying, instead she sat level and came down in a very orderly - rather attractive - manner. Whilst that would be a positive thing under normal circumstances, (preventing any damage on landing), that aerodynamic stability may have effectively kept her flying in an updraft. From what I've seen of the Pacific C1, it behaves in a similar fashion when the DT pops. (Just an observation which may be inaccurate!) Losing the Ryan reminds me of a 1,000 year old Thomas Aquinas quote: If the highest aim of a captain were to preserve his ship, he would keep it in port forever.

    • @maxfliart
      @maxfliart  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@crashrr2993 Indeed, the models were built to fly. If I can cheat the thermals of their grasp 95% of the time, I'm happy with that. Only two of my birds have flown away with the DT popped. Sadly, the 36" Gadfly had flown with me for 18 years, so that was indeed a tough one to watch go away. Didn't actually speck out in Muncie, just finally fell out a mile away, over a forest. Gone. Maybe I should increase the angle of the stab when fully DT'd. I always felt that something, anything in the stab angle would do the job...but obviously, it's not a theory that's 100%.

      maxfliart Beautiful! My dad built balsas as a kid. Built a couple for me when I was in grade school, and then I took to building a few for myself before I hit my teens.
      He retired around 20 or so years ago from his job as a Port Warden (they don’t make those anymore) for the L.A. Harbor, and started building again during that time until he suffered from Alzheimer’s about 12 years ago, he then passed away on what will be 5 years ago, the day after this Christmas.
      My wife and I had the honor and pleasure (you had to know the guy) of being caregiver for him the previous 5 before his passing.
      I am left with two unbuilt kits of his and am now starting to build again after all these years (I had hoped to do that with him while he lived with us in those 5 years, but caregiving did not allow the time & “luxury”).
      Of course, happening upon this video, I wanted to share all this (and yep, you have me crying) and I also want to say thank you for sharing this. I am also pretty sure my dad enjoyed watching that particularly extraordinary flight! God bless!

      The artistry of the build is truly inspirational. The step by step construction and assembly video is impressive. I especially liked the meticulous attention to scale detail. The majesty of the model aircraft in flight was a thing of beauty. The thought that this amazing scale aircraft flew away is heartbreaking. Your plane rose up and "danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings" as so beautifully described by John Gillespie Magee, Jr.

      Thx. This one hurt, as I followed her for nearly four minutes with the camera, then ran to get the binoculars and she was gone. Couldn't find her. Either she soared even higher in those ten seconds, or fell out and hid from me on the massive field. Looked for 90 minutes, then got chased off the field by competing thunder storms with massive lightning strikes from the east & west. Never been that anxious to get off the middle of a flat, wide field...

    Good to find this. It wasn't on the back catalogue. I have been catching up on my day off! There's something poetic about a plane disappearing into the sky.. Its just such a pity it has to be such a fab one as this. Those wheels are great.. I saw an article back in 1970s in Aeromodeler Magazine about making spoked wheels from cotton, on a card bobbin, stiffened with cellulose dope. They used bits of biro refill as tyres.. Great to see this Ryan in detail! 👍

      Thx, and congrats...welcome back. Yes, legacy...good way to look at it. I always figured, at least I have the videos, or studio shots of the models, looking their very best. What happens after that, happens, but it's all good...and, it's in the hands of the Thermal Gods. Or, as I like to think of it...my late dad and another friend who had recently passed, both in their 90s, decided to have a closer look at this bird!! Perhaps they need more balsa and F/F action up there! :-) So in a way, a flyaway is somewhat of a comfort. But getting stuck 60' up in a tree...that's an entirely different matter...

    What a heart break...
    If you don't fly, you can't fly away...
    It's the chance we take every time we let go one of our creations.

    Elegiac and lyrical stuff, Tom. A flight to another world: the music, the plane, the sunlight, the countryside. Kind of thing I'd like playing in a loop at my funeral. Except that makes it sound mawkish, which it isn't. I'm planning to build Rupert Moore's DH Tiger Moth someday soon. That's a big model. Don't know whether to go down the laser cutting route (I'd have to use a company to do that for me - I don't have the equipment myself), or whether to attempt it in the full, old-fashioned way, cutting every piece by hand or using templates. If you have a moment, let me know what you think. Thanks for your videos. Tom from France (subscribed, of course).

    This was a beautiful flying machine. You are an excellent model builder. Do you see a Version 2.0?

      Thx. Perhaps there will be a re-boot of the model...we'll see. Was a bit more complex than I had imagined,
      due to the odd wing saddle, fuselage, and cockpit configuration. A lot of trial and error to get the cockpit area resolved.
      But yes, in the sky, she was well worth the effort. I still can't believe I lost track of her....

    I am building a Gillow's Spirit of St Louis. Wondering if I should add some dihedral to the wings? Rubber powered.

    Watch "the Mysterious Airman" silent 1928 film serial and you will see very good shots of this design.

    I have to add that this video is getting more difficult to watch with each viewing, Thomas. What with the FAC nationals cancelled and all. Your videos are, and will remain an inspiration to us.

    So much better to watch your creation fly away than to see it sitting on the floor beside a desk with a fallen book on it.......not from experience, but I know someone.........

      Indeed...nothing worse than what the gang calls "hangar rash". Many sad stories out there, from frisky and curious cats & dogs, to falling tool boxes.

    i heard of this happening to FF model outside of Wichita KS. modeler stated it got caught in the 'heat dome' of the city and was wafted away. i said stupidly 'why didn't you put a servo on it'. man he did not appreciate that at all.

    Are you planning on making a video on printing on tissue? Mine always rips during printing process. Great video as always. Thanks.

    I just got a 30” DeSoutter MK1, but it will be electric.

    Two question for Max. Have you ever thought about putting a name and phone number tag in your models just in case someone that finds them might return them? Also, are you doping the tissue that you apply? What with? Nitrate, low shrink? Thanks.

    • @maxfliart
      @maxfliart  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thx for the feedback. Yes, I put my name & cell on every model. This area is heavily rural, with miles of crops, so it's likely that it landed in corn or soy. I spray my models with a dusting of Krylon clear or matte. It's very light, and contains a plasticizer that prevents the tissue from shrinking further. So warps are unlikely. Magic in a can!

    That’s the saddest video I’ve ever seen. Beautiful creation, nicely done.
