  • Hello everyone! I really wanted to talk about this today as I can't believe it isn't something that Sephora have asked their staff to stop doing. I've never heard or experienced stories like this from any other store.

They do not need to apologize. You are not considering the statistics that a large percentage of thefts are done by people of color. That is WHY they focus on them. The children are making a mess, not stealing. It has become a thing where groups of colored women steal and sell the items they stole to other countries. Basically, they are targeting the modus operandi of syndicates. And the truth is they are the bad apples of the black community.

Preach Sephora is acting how MAC did back in the early 2000s..MAC Was the Regina George of the time they judged you in your make up etc and they tried to say your skirt is pretty then reflect it and say it’s ugly as shit…at least it was about the makeup only….battle of the MUAS Sephora used to be chill now it’s a 180…MAC Employees are more chill where now if you go into a Sephora they are in your ass like. Moth to a porch light!! It’s like getting those TH-cam ads that you can’t click for 35 seconds the pressure is too much!! I say no thank you I’m fine etc then push on the VIB card when u saw you have it they try make you get the credit card!! When you decline they have an attitude and make your experience worse!! Aka Sephora studio beford Ave wburg bk Sephora 14th at Union sq Sephora 34th at heralds and def Sephora at times sq both locations!! Shit was so irritating I asked for the manager for once…I was getting stalked by the security and other employees when I rejected the Sephora credit card offer I knew two of the employees I’ve seen them
There a few times before no issues now they were stalking me I called them out and the store this was the u
Union sq location!!!!I went full Karen for the right reason everyone that was shopping there was un easy and angsty… they targeted women that were mature women that looked unkempt teens and anyone that was just browsing they are vultures for the commission and want to seem cultivated and curated for whoever is supervising….i found out put the tea after I reported it to management….the tea is it’s retail politics or retail GOT house of the dragon shit….im going off on a rant but it’s not right to treat customers like shit aggressively panhandle to people and be judgmental to who you you treat well and not so……

As someone who managed a sephora for 8 years, Sephora doesn’t care about inclusivity. They care about you giving them money (KVD & HUDA were the only female owned brands. The rest were owned by white men or KENDO (again white men)Where is the inclusivity?)
They cared about hitting sales, selling 3-4 products per client , hitting goals, & as far as that SZA incident I worked for Sephora when that happened. Only certain locations were closed for that first hour (I’m in Southern California). We were forced to remain open as were all SiJCP locations . We didn’t receive any additional training or coaching to relay to our teams. We received an email about “inclusivity@ & that was it.
We were expected to “protect” the product from suspicious people & when inventory came around each year, if our percentage wasn’t under a certain number it directly affected leadership’s bonus.

If hubby is down with talking to a manager, it would help for him to talk to a manager and tell them that "Its surprising nobody followed y'all, because their staff can't seem to leave you alone when solo shopping".
Then write an email to corporate telling them.
They might not actually care, but getting complaints against the stores will fck up their managers and regional managers bonuses if they don't get their staff's shit together.

The supervisors/managers were CONSTANTLY in the headset telling us to check on certain people or badger customers into buying extra products. Especially if you were zoned in fragrance, you were essentially security. It was incredibly frustrating and made working there not fun, it felt insincere. I worked temp at a Sephora. I used to occasionally hear, "could someone help Deborah in skincare? Looks like Deborah came in to sample perfumes today. I think Deborah needs help finding the right shade of lip liner." I was told it was a code word used for shifty looking customers. In the time I was there, there was only one customer I would consider a "Deborah" and she was known among the staff. She came in fairly regularly too, so I started keeping an eye out for her, specifically, when assistance for Deborah was called.
What I noticed was that the woman I was looking out for was never the Deborah. She was Sharon. Was she known to mess up testers? Yes. Was she shifty? Yes. Did she steal? Yes. When I brought it up to management, I was told to leave her alone bc she was homeless, down on her luck, and only stole low ticket items. All we could do was inform security to stop her once she left the store. Probably don't have to tell you, she was white.
The Deborahs I was supposed to keep an eye on often looked like me or the people I was friends with in school. Diverse, but not passing a brown paper bag test. Not all though, just "the ones that look like they couldn't afford the products they were picking up." Mind you, I didn't feel right assuming someone's economic status by how they dressed to shop. I was homeless at the time, so they could likely afford it more than I could. I'd come in early to use testers to apply my face for my shift.
Anyway, when the season was over, and they were promoting some of us to permanent staff, I was told I wasn't picked. Did a great job with customer service and sales, but I wasn't "serious enough about loss prevention."
A couple months later, I went into the same store to refill some skincare. I was asked by 3 associates if i needed help. I felt an ick wondering if i was now a Deborah. I put my products back and left. Since then, I don't shop at Sephora, except for a couple products my mom uses that we can't get at Ulta. Those, I usually buy online and pick up in store.

0:58 in and I’m already triggered memories of going into a Sephora to look at skincare. Three workers huddled together and started whispering to each other while looking and trying to hide that they were pointing at me. So this blonde girl comes over, asks if I needed any help, I say no and that I was just looking around (this was when they first started introducing K-beauty brands into their stores), but she proceeded to act like my personal shopping assistant for a very long 30 minutes. What she was really doing was monitoring the only Black girl in this very busy store, and I immediately picked up on it when they had their little huddle. How am I sure she was profiling me? Because she followed me into the perfume, hair care, and makeup sections. I didn’t want anything in those areas, but I was scanning the store for myself to see if anyone else was being monitored or “helped” in the same way, in case she wanted to gaslight me. She didn’t even ask other people if they needed help in her mission to keep eyes on me. I’m quiet and very shy, but confrontational when provoked. So I confronted her. I very loudly asked why nobody else in their very busy store was getting followed around, or receiving help from her, and was it because she and the two other people she huddled up with when I walked in determined the only Black girl in the entire store *must* be up to no good? I was ready to spend $300+ on the stuff in my lil basket, but I just handed it to her and walked out. I stopped shopping at Sephora altogether after that. I don’t go where I’m not wanted.

My friend who used to work there says "it's because they'll probably get in trouble if no one helped you" but I argue that everyone is outfitted with walkie talkies... assuming everyone has somehow failed to see OR hear me being "offered help" can't someone let their coworkers know that the person in the red sweater has been offered help 4 times in the last 10 minutes and to leave them alone? But even worse... I think the walkie talkies seem to be being used to sick even MORE employees on me to "check up on me" when I'm trying to shop 😮‍💨

I'm a beauty specialist at a chain drugstore and this is my theory on it; it is not every day that I see a security guard at my own workspace and it's not every day that I see a security guard at Sephora, so when there is no security guard (which there really should be when you're working with expensive materials), the employees have to play security guard. This is a problem for a lot of reasons because they are not trained to be security guards; they're trained to be beauty specialists. The only training they get when it comes to security is to keep an eye on someone who appears sketchy and call out a certain code when you actually do see someone stealing. This is also a problem because "sketchy" has a different meaning for everyone and for a racist, it just means black.

    • @pepperpaige203
      @pepperpaige203 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

This is the best explanation I have seen so far. Beauty Specialist here as well. Our “training” included: do not engage, let the person go, take note of the time, let the manager know, and log the experience into the Loss Prevention program. If we know for a fact something has been swiped, we call the cops. We have organized retail crime in this area, so we also alert our other branches of folks “making their rounds”.

I have gone into my local Sephora, located in a bougie white neighborhood, and had sales associates follow me while pretending to price check/check stock. They aren't even doing the "can I help you?" shtick. The one older woman literally followed me from aisle to aisle. I was there with my white friend, and no one followed her into the aisles she went in. I got so angry, I actually said out loud, "i want to leave. They're treating me like I'm going to steal something." The sales person didn't acknowledge what I was saying at all, and I left. I try very hard to just order online now. The end result is I have to return more stuff like foundation that doesn't match me, and Sephora eats those opened packages. They reap what they sow...

Can you not buy those brands anywhere else? If I don't like how a store is behaving I stop purchasing from them. It sucks if it's something exclusive to them. But it feels better than knowing how hard I work for my paycheck and giving part of it to a company that is doing me harm.
I think of it as, what if their salaries come from sales? So the money I would have spent might go to pay the salary of the same person who followed me around because I'm black.

Another option is: You can stop giving them money at all!! You can shop elsewhere or for exclusives you can do without.
Is the blush more important than you being treated well and with respect?
Is the product worth you being profiled as a criminal and followed around?

I worked in Sephora many, many years ago so I don’t know how relevant my information is but I’ll share anyway lol. We were told that we don’t have security because basically, Sephora can’t be bothered. They’d rather we tail customers that we think are acting suspicious in hopes of deterring them from stealing. There was a code name we used for suspicious people, “K.T. (known theft)” and we’d just call them “Katie’s” over the headset. Sephora would rather we deter theft and not hire security because they don’t want to deal with the legal issues that may come after. When I quit Sephora I would still shop there as it was the only one in my town and they’d even accuse me of stealing even though I’d spend hundreds of dollars each visit. I stopped shopping there completely and have switched all K-beauty or indie brands instead.
ETA: I only knew they were suspecting me when my former coworkers would tell me they’re being instructed to follow. Apparently management couldn’t understand why I was coming in and shopping?

One of the problems in retail is that the upper management demands that the regular staff be security over focusing on good customer service. If the need for security is that dire in the store then hire security. The general staff are not trained for security and this leads to problems that no one wants and shitty customer service. Crappy customer service leads to customers finding better places to shop.

I worked loss prevention when i was an assistant manager at a higher end retail store and it was NOT like this! Yes, wed keep our eye on the customers (we called them clients) and offer assistance but we didnt profile people because we knew it was the person you'd least expect that would spend $1,000+. And there would be people dressed up, looking fabulous, thatd be shoving atuff in their purse or under their own clothes. It was only suspicious people wed offer extra intentive customer service to. Shifty eyes, paying more attention to the sales people than the clothes they're 'looking at', stuff like that. Then of course you have the occasional shoppers that arent looking for anything in particular, strolling through the store slowly, looking at everything. There's a way to prevent theft and then theres profiling and it can be a fine line at times which i understand but these people are out of control

Thank you for talking about this 🙏 the gaslighting can be so real sometimes so it’s nice to hear someone acknowledge this

Omg yes! LUSH is so intense! I do think they want to make a sale and are helpful but if you’re having a bad day and don’t want to deal with sales people it can be wayyyy too much

@@megg5774 yeah but the thing is, it’s not even a bad day thing. I will spend money if I am left alone. I can read and I can smell things and decide what I want. The moment they don’t back off when I tell them I don’t need help - I am out!

      I Walk Out.
My family is older and from the South (one member literally lived through desegregation). Growing up I was taught, if they aren't going to treat us right why would we give them our money? Has always stuck with me!
They think I can't afford to shop there and that I'm a thief?? Then I'm saving money today and tomorrow, because I'm leaving and never coming back.
