  • This is the WeedShark weed-eater head. It can cut through some tough brush for sure. I was able to take out weeds up to 1" thick and a small tree at 1/2". The blades on the head allow for cutting of things that string could not even touch. The head also allow for multiple sizes of string.

    I use to cut ski trails and maintain them in the summer, a brush king which looks like a big throwing star with three points on it can take down a tree 3" at the base with one pass, it can be sharpened repeatedly, fits on most gas powered weed whackers and costs a lot less than that thing. One blade will last two to three years as long as you don't hit too many rocks and they cut grass pretty good when they're sharp.

    I used to own a Stihl "Brushette" in the early 80s, which I bought used. It attached to my Stihl chainsaw, which was already really heavy. It included a string trimmer, a tricut blade and a circular saw attachment. I cut a bunch of screw willows in my back yard with the tricut blade. It went through brush up to about 2" without a problem. But after few hours of that you really were pooped.

      Sounds like a beast! There are lots of nice attachments out there. This one was a little heavy and the blades needed to be sharper.

    It's best to keep the cutting material to the right of the head, you seem to be cutting mostly on the back side or going back and forth. When you cut on the left (back side) it throws the material towards you instead of away. You can also cut lower by tilting the head slightly.

    I've had a Weed Shark Pro on my Echo for 3 years, and I love it. Bought a spool of .105 string ( because the .130 from Weedshark cost too much) and just cut a bunch of 14" lengths, it's a lot cheaper that way. The string that comes with it does last a lot longer, but I have had the spool of .105 for 3 years. Edges great, cuts about anything, and you can use it as a blower to clean the walkways afterwards .(Just don't cut trees, get a brush cutter for that. I got the Echo brush cutter kit for mine and it will go through 1-1/2" limbs or saplings like butter.)
    On the bigger stuff, try coming down on it from the top of the plant instead of trying to cut it off at the bottom. Just come straight down on it like you are lowering the head to the ground. It will shred it up really nice, and make the big stuff go away faster.
    Someone in here said it is garbage. Either never used one, or doesn't know how to use it. I bought a second one just in case the price would go up (which it did) or in case they stop making them (which I hope they don't).
    If I find a good deal on another one, I'll but it to have a double back-up. My first one is 3 years old, and still going strong. Second one is still in the package. A third one will last me longer than I will be eating weeds.
    Thinking about getting one of those BadgerHeads I saw you review. Looked pretty cool.

    I used to do a LOT of clearing work along riverbank and lakesides, using the Stihl 3-point brush knife metal blade for almost everything, from plain lawn grass, through bramble and reeds, to trees up to an inch thick. I don't recall the model number of the brushcutter itself but I reckon it was maybe one step up from the one you're using. It demanded a deal of respect, as it would throw pebbles or slugs (ugh!) at your face at high speed, if you were incautious. However, that blade simply excelled. I very occasionally had to swap to a saw blade for bigger stuff but I never found the need to downgrade to poly-string for anything.
    This head seems promising, but I would probably sharpen about a quarter-inch of the blade tips, to help a bit with the tougher stuff and reduce the load on the motor/drivetrain.
    Just my 2-cents worth, as if anyone cared!

    • @LandtoHouse
      @LandtoHouse  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have seen those metal blades! On this head I would have to agree with you. Sharpening the blades or at least some of them would make a big difference.

      I agree.
      However, ALWAYS go with Stihl Equipment.
      It is DESIGNED TO WORK WITH YOUR MACHINE.
      Why do you think they sell their own oil and all that too?
      Parts from Stihl are the only way to go.
      It's over $200 for a good Machine. Why use a shitty aftermarket head NOT EVEN designed for your Model specifically?
      A well-cared for Stihl trimmer will last 12-15 years or more maintained correctly.

    One thing that possibly should have been said is.
    This head could possibly destroy a cable driven weed eater pretty fast and cause smaller horsepower trimmers motors to possibly overheat if not allowed to cool off. Make sure if you're going to use attachments like this that your trimmer is shaft driven and not cable driver. A shaft driven weedeater cost usually around $200 and check your owner's manual to before using something like this. Or be ready to purchase a new one.
    Nice video and the trimmer head seemed decent but a saw blade attachment I have found works really good for the stihl brand trimmer. Thumbs Up

      The really large string that came with the unit was a pain to remove and install. The normal smaller stuff that I use was a lot better. This is the type head that I would install when I needed to get a lot of thicker stuff cut. Then I would put the lighter head on for grass.

    You should show how easy or hard it is to re-thread additional line into that head. It looks like it is easy to push the 2 ends into it initially, but then you have to make a sharp turn to thread it back from the inside, which looks like it could be hard to do, especially with the thicker stuff. Does it look like you could sharpen one edge of those blades to get an easier cut?

    • @LandtoHouse
      @LandtoHouse  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are right. The first thread is easier. But once you have the string started in the second step its not that hard to pull it all the way to the end. I think that I will give the blades a little edge. Should make for better cutting.

    My Mowing & Hedging experience simply tells me that I don't think its a good idea to mix the blade stuff with the cord, coz' whats the point if always the cord will reach the surface first and slows down the whole working process and turns it into an entire pain to cut basically any bigger thicker stuff without struggling....
    Sorry I can't see it efficient...
    I use trimmer line for grass, and blades for thicker stuff, but in my eyes its just defeats the purpose of mixing it!

    I'd throw on a Miter saw blade for the tough stuff, I trimmed tree branches the size of my arm with an FS-90R, also took a chip out of a metal tube fence post that was hiding in brush that was only tall enough to be able to tear up a mower from hitting it.

    • @LandtoHouse
      @LandtoHouse  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those 3 sided blades or a miter blade would be ideal for this type work.

    • @kruppratte218
      @kruppratte218 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      true, I've only used the 3 sided blades once, the Miter saw blades say that for a Max RPM, it should only be 4,800 RPM, a Construction Grade miter blade and the blades for the weed Whackers are up to 11,500 RPM, but the Miter blades can hold up to being on the trimmer, caution is required though, although same goes for any blade, I'd recommend having a guard on the trimmer at all times when having the miter blade on, because of the RPM difference, I used the Shoulder Strap mount as a blade holder on the trimmer, to keep everything together, without adding any spacers to give the blades less travel room or padding on the shaft or the strap mount so that switching blades is quicker and easier for out in the field, the Vibrating of the engine and the trimmer, the blade scratched up the metal shaft of the trimmer and the inside of the hole in the blades, eat at the metal strap mount, I'm still working on those wrinkles, lol. But those Construction Grade Miter Saw Blades made by Dewalt are of pretty good quality to be meant for 4,800 RPM and still hold up to cutting both brush and Metal at speeds exceeding 10,000 RPM and not have any noticeable flaws afterwards and you can get a package of two Carbide Tipped 12 inch blades with a 1 inch Arbor hole for $60, one for fine trim cutting and another for rip cutting.

    • @LandtoHouse
      @LandtoHouse  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had not considered that those blades are only rated for a lower RPM. I wonder what would happen if one failed. It just seems that a blade spinning in that plane would not break apart.

    • @kruppratte218
      @kruppratte218 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      usually when I use the 12 inch miter saw blade, I use a normal trimmer head on it as reinforcement, either the auto-cut head, which come standard or the Dura-cut head, which is bigger diameter than the Auto-cut, but the string just locks into it and the length of string that you normally throw away with the auto-cut, 4x pieces of the string two sticking out each side, side by side, what might last 15 minutes of trimming can last 2 hours of trimming, but with the bigger blade, you can feel the trimmer vibrating violently from the combination of the Powerful engine and the blade flexing and you can hear the blade, when it gets up to speed it'll whistle from cutting the air, I also like to have the guard on, just to have something in between me and the blade, in case things did go south, if it was a damaged blade, spinning at over 10,000 RPM, just get a blank Re-writable CD just so that it's no real loss and mount it on a handheld grinder, you might what a sheet of Polycarbonate between the grinder and you, that's why I'm figuring ways to iron out the wrinkles, I don't use the Guard when trimming with string and the normal trimming guard has plenty of room for the 12 inch blade, so, I'm thinking of fastening a sheet of galvanized steel to the guard both on the inside and outside, for extra protection, I got me a backpack for carrying the tools, string and fuel for the trimmer, for maintenance out on the field, it's like having a tool belt for running a trimmer, it needs pockets for the trimmer heads, but the lubricant can be carried in the backpack, if desired, the Blades, I store on the main shaft just passed the D handle, it covers up the safety writing and the model type on the shaft, but oh well. I think the CD on a handheld grinder can be watched on Mythbusters they'd have the CD in both normal speed and in Slow Mo, after I seen what I can do with the blade, and knowing what all's going on with the blade at exceeded speeds, I only use it now, when a job calls for it, like the brush is too thick for string and it calls for a metal blade, yet the 7.5 inch Stihl scratcher tooth blade is taking too long to do the job and uses up too much time and gas to do the job.

    You are using that in a manner that is dangerous and hard on your equipment. You don't gouge the head into anything. Ease the cutting blades in slowly. You will snap the shaft in the machine doing that. Also, that Stihl weedeater will take a blade that can cut up to 3".

    • @herpnderpn2484
      @herpnderpn2484 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those Stihl's use a square solid rod, not that junk flexible cable. I was just using my 110r to cut branches and trees down. If I snap the shaft, I'll drive to the store and buy another..... And then tell you you're right. I was using the 3 blade Stihl attachment.
      I would be more worried about the gearbox, but honestly, nothing he cut comes even remotely close to what that machine can handle.
      Oh, and that blade he tested is junk.
