The second one. In the late 80's i drove 2 MK1 and in the beginning of 90's i drove a tuned GTI 16V . That was the best car in ever had. 175 PK around 980kg, a lot of fun! I never forget it. But the both MK1 are good as well!!!
Let's be honest, the GTI really changed Europe and the rest of the world back then. Finally a “fast” car for the people. Everything that VW is today with the Golf started with this very model back then. Thank you very much for reminding us of cars like this!
Golf is named after a The Gulf Stream, Jetta is the german word for Jet Stream, Passat is also a wind, Sirocco is a Mediterranean wind called Sirocco and Polo is the Polar Wind.
Many VW models are named after wind streams such as Jetta is german for jet stream, Passat means trade wind, or Scirocco is named after Sirocco, a Mediterranean wind.
Watching you review these older cars is like a flashback to the times these cars were released. Back when people were dreaming of ditching the classic sporty driving experience and replacing it with cars that do everything themselves and have TV's as dashboards!
I bought one new in the early 80’s and loved driving it. I was living in Philadelphia at the time and in the city with the closely spaced stop lights nothing could beat it light to light. It was a real blast and actually more fun than the BMW I now drive!
in the mid 90´s when i got my drivers licence i drove a toyota corolla 1.6 gti twincam, but moste of my friends drove golf mk1 and mk2 gti´s, the twincam was faster and alot more reliable
The best thing about this Golf you covered is that its not a gutted out converted 500 BHP monster that is too hard to drive, but rather stock as all classic cars should be. Great video, watched it all from start to finish. More of these classics please.
Yo tengo un Golf mk1 también , pero es un cabriolet karmann de 1989 , con el mismo motor , el 1.8 inyección mecánica ( Bosch K - Jetronic ) de 112 cv , va genial ! 🎉🎉🎉
I'm grateful to own the legendary citi golf 1.8L CTI kjetronic which is only available in South Africa as a replacement of mk1 GTI.this particular version Started in 1990 and last came in 1996 I love this Iconic golf ❤.
the old cars had the road feel which made them exciting to drive, its now lost in modern refined cars. i had a mk1 1.8 gti. its still in family ownership testament to how well built these old vdubs were. they were made from good quality metal
Not trying to plug another channel. I love AutoNL. But, Carwow recently uploaded drag races. Between all the different MK GTI's Mk 1 is still my favorite, because my friend had a diesel Rabbit when we were in high school. If that makes sense to you it's because you know.
A friend of mine had a -76 Golf GTI with a 1.6 liter engine with a 4-speed gearbox. It was tuned to 130 hp and what a fun car it is. It managed 120 km/h in second gear. About like a small rocket forty years ago. Much more fun to drive than the 112 hp version.
Nice review. In terms of other classic hatchback, I would love to see a Renault 5 Turbo I / 2, or a Ford Sierra Cosworth RS or maybe a Peugeot 205 T16. 😎
There really isn’t a controversy about the name Golf. VW was on a marketing campaign through the 70’s naming models after winds. Scirocco was the predecessor to the Golf, which is a wind. Jetta was an abbreviation of Jet stream or such in another language. Maybe they should have called the Polo the Break as in break wind. Maybe that was what lead to the Passat, as in pass gas. They did after all make a gutless diesel of that.
Id love to see vw come out with a “retro” Golf/Gti like an updated version of this. Basic but functional maybe electric or diesel version with good throwback style for a competitive price focused at entry level buyers and people that would want some style with great fuel economy or electric and wouldn’t want a tesla or crossover.
When I was young I had a Kadett C 1.2S Berlina , and my cousin had a Golf 1 diesel, everything on my car was better than the golf, light steering/golf very heavy, smooth and quiet/ golf like a tractor, performance, Kadett had one of the best gear shifts ever made/ golf really bad, rear wheel drive and fun to drive/golf average....Why was the Golf so popular, I don't know. Maybe this GTI saved it.
Used to own Mark 1 Golf GTI 1.6 81kW(110 PS) '83. grey color, 5 door, 5 speed, imported from Switzerland also Mark 3 GTI 2.0 8v in black and Mark 5 GTI Stage I in black.Liked Mark I the most... ;-)
VW South Africa produced well into the 2000's. Just ask Google for a VW Citi Golf or Volkswagen Citi. It's still a cult car for many people, also one of the most stolen cars in the country. The equivalent of the GTI would be called the CTI but it wasn't produced for the entire run of production if I'm not mistaken.
I would love if someone just started to produce legendary cars again. Just build everything as back in the day. Maybe make improvements for build quality and rust protection but that’s it. And yes, get a 1.9 205
Watching from the UK, I really enjoy your videos and this one was great, you definitely conveyed it well, hope to see you get some interesting retro metal to review!
What’s your favourite Gen of Golf GTI?
First of all the Gen V but than comes the Gen VII...
The second one.
In the late 80's i drove 2 MK1 and in the beginning of 90's i drove a tuned GTI 16V . That was the best car in ever had. 175 PK around 980kg, a lot of fun! I never forget it. But the both MK1 are good as well!!!
Golf 2 GTI 16V KR,
Golf 3 GTI 16V ABF!
REAL LEGENDS
First one *Hands down*
i love the 5th
9,5sec to 100kmh.... 40yo GTI still kickin :)
ABSOLUTE BEAUTY
With bad shifting, and much spining wheels starting.. should be about 8.8/9 sec .
Let's be honest, the GTI really changed Europe and the rest of the world back then. Finally a “fast” car for the people. Everything that VW is today with the Golf started with this very model back then. Thank you very much for reminding us of cars like this!
It did...and the benchmark for reliability and build...now VW been swooped on by Kia Hyandai and soon the chinese
Golf is named after a The Gulf Stream, Jetta is the german word for Jet Stream, Passat is also a wind, Sirocco is a Mediterranean wind called Sirocco and Polo is the Polar Wind.
No. This winds takes names from looser's WWII cars
Jetta is the german word for jet stream? What? 😅
Many VW models are named after wind streams such as Jetta is german for jet stream, Passat means trade wind, or Scirocco is named after Sirocco, a Mediterranean wind.
The original hot hatch*, the one that started it all
that started the Golf not the Hatchback in general.
It started the hot hatch though that's the difference a fast hatchback, I was around them times to witness the hype and drive several of them😊
I've had the 1.6 lt. 5-speed in the late Eighties and I`ll never forget the moment when i fully accelerate the first time :-)
I had the first uk 5 speed in 1980 MHS423V really made the car...30-70 MPH in 8 seconds still quicker than most turbodiesels today
Watching you review these older cars is like a flashback to the times these cars were released. Back when people were dreaming of ditching the classic sporty driving experience and replacing it with cars that do everything themselves and have TV's as dashboards!

More reliable then the jetronic cars probably but more reliable then the digifant ones...nah
“It transports you to simpler times.” I agree!
The best thing about this model is the view from that windshield! I knew exactly back then the measurement of my car.
Sleeper cars are better than supercars
Word brother! 👍
nice👏👏💪🔥
This isn't a sleeper though
They are more fun to modify and drive, even stock
Wrong
The best thing about this Golf you covered is that its not a gutted out converted 500 BHP monster that is too hard to drive, but rather stock as all classic cars should be. Great video, watched it all from start to finish. More of these classics please.
Love these old skool cars. I used to have a Rover Metro GTI back in the day. Another cool hatchback
It was rubbish...laughable like a GTI visa or uno turbo LOL...this is the original and best
What a great review! 112hp for 810kg...not bad! 😃 Lovely styling too.
I'd like to see a six cylinder E36 on the channel!
Yo tengo un Golf mk1 también , pero es un cabriolet karmann de 1989 , con el mismo motor , el 1.8 inyección mecánica ( Bosch K - Jetronic ) de 112 cv , va genial ! 🎉🎉🎉
thank you for that . I owned a 1983 Rabbit Gti and it was a beast. over 200.000 miles on it and ran perfect.
Amazing car. So joyful to drive little beast.
one of my first cars....sold it....regret it until today
Great! In 1992 i had a Golf 1 GTI Pirelli! (Baujahr 1984) Your Video is like a Timemachine!
I'm grateful to own the legendary citi golf 1.8L CTI kjetronic which is only available in South Africa as a replacement of mk1 GTI.this particular version Started in 1990 and last came in 1996 I love this Iconic golf ❤.
Why is called citi?
@@vladislavdimitrov4646just a marketing name for the continuation of the MK1 Golf in SA that stopped production in late 2000's
Amazing Car !
I like to see a Opel E kadet GSI 2.0 16V or a Opel Calibra 2.0 16V.
Back when cars were simple, no power steering, no touchscreens, manual transmission and a loud sounding engine 😎
Sehr schöner Zustand 👍Ich fahre diesen gleichen Wagen heute noch mit sehr viel Spaß und Freude 🤗
India had the suzuki K10 Alto, which is analogous to this car. But 90 bhp. sigh. Wish we can have such care now
This car in convertible form is one of the coolest cars of all time (in my humble opinion)
My dad has a black one
i still have my 1982 in storage :) i really need to get it going again since i've got a 2.1 liter 8v with Eurospec head just waiting to go into it.
how can you not love your friendly Golf from the neighberhood :)
Iconic car! ❤
the old cars had the road feel which made them exciting to drive, its now lost in modern refined cars. i had a mk1 1.8 gti. its still in family ownership testament to how well built these old vdubs were. they were made from good quality metal
80s cars
I remember the gearbox also was a problem with cold start when it was new
Had 3 of these. 1.6 5speed and 2 1.8's. Best most fun cars I ever had. Loved the way it would squat down at the back when you accelerate.
I would love to see more classics on the channel, but they are hard to find stock or in good condition sadly..
To watch A Renault 5 Turbo review would be great!!
MORE CLASSIC CARS ON THE CHANNEL PLEASE!!!
Corrado g60
Would like to see first generation of mini
I’d love to see a restomod version of this. Also, a restomod of the ‘86 Scirroco would be so awesome.
Yes, do stuff like these ! But you've got to push them on the autobahn!
Would love to see some old Japanese GTIs, such as the Galant GTI, AE82 and AE92 Corolla GTI, Colt...etc 😊
Not trying to plug another channel.
I love AutoNL.
But, Carwow recently uploaded drag races. Between all the different MK GTI's
Mk 1 is still my favorite, because my friend had a diesel Rabbit when we were in high school.
If that makes sense to you it's because you know.
Wonderfull. This kind of car and driving to the lake in east germany, on a hot summer day. :)
Cant get better then that!
My father owned 1982 Golf for 25 years 🚗
we need more stuff like this
I'd love to see a Fiesta Xr2i review if someone has one to give you lol. Loved looking at this Golf review.
Holy crap that is a clean GTI, These were so different than the ones we have today and that motor sounds good.
I would watch this every time instead of another Mclaren or SUperDuper Lambo
Was really hoping for an Autobahn Blast with this one 😂
Please do an e30 325i again
Really cool !!
Fiat uno turbo ie .. Toyota starlet GT .. R5 gt turbo.. 205 gti .. Nissan sunny GTI-R
Awesome review! Please do one on a golf 2 16v 🙏
I would love to see an Audi 80/100
What is this area you are driving? Amazing views
Had a 1.8 GTI many years ago was a great car its still on the road In the UK AFV 730Y
Wilwood breaks on that GTI and ready to go
*brakes
Do more 80's performance and 90's...well even 70's would be cool 😎
Nice sounds very nice and it's always nice to own one like this. 👍
Ford Fiesta XR2 😍
A friend of mine had a -76 Golf GTI with a 1.6 liter engine with a 4-speed gearbox. It was tuned to 130 hp and what a fun car it is. It managed 120 km/h in second gear. About like a small rocket forty years ago. Much more fun to drive than the 112 hp version.
Man i wish i had one of these
I had a 1983 1800cc Mars Red Campaign model. Loved it😊
Mk1 is such an interesting car
Nice review. In terms of other classic hatchback, I would love to see a Renault 5 Turbo I / 2, or a Ford Sierra Cosworth RS or maybe a Peugeot 205 T16. 😎
Nice car❤
I would love to see you get your hands on a toyota ae86, I always imagined it as the Japanese golf
J'en possède une c'est une auto formidable ❤

I've had 3 of these and they're really fun. Here in South Africa they're still a favorite today.
that looks so coooooool
Had one in the 80s great little car ,brings back some memories
Is there someone with a imported mk1 Citi R line you can do a review on so you can feel what a proper mk1 golf should feel and sound like.
the essence of nostalgia of hatchbacks....
Legend
When I was young I had a Kadett C 1.2S Berlina , and my cousin had a Golf 1 diesel, everything on my car was better than the golf, light steering/golf very heavy, smooth and quiet/ golf like a tractor, performance, Kadett had one of the best gear shifts ever made/ golf really bad, rear wheel drive and fun to drive/golf average....Why was the Golf so popular, I don't know. Maybe this GTI saved it.
It did...Golf 1 was bland until the GTI came along...I had a 1.2 Kadet and it was better
Actually, the first Polo was supposed to be the new Beetle but people saw the Golf as a successor rather than the Polo
Used to own Mark 1 Golf GTI 1.6 81kW(110 PS) '83. grey color, 5 door, 5 speed, imported from Switzerland also Mark 3 GTI 2.0 8v in black and Mark 5 GTI Stage I in black.Liked Mark I the most... ;-)
You gotta do an autobahn run
The rabbit is the king!
Golf 2 GDI/GTD Maks
I miss my first car and only car I love truly! Golf 4 1.9tdi ALH😢😢😢😢 RIP. It got stolen in romania
Awesome golf! You have to review golf MK2 GTI and corrado VR6! Definitely a VR6 golf or corrado! Legendary cars!
A VW Lupo GTI please, the one and only successor
Succesor*
Nice little GTI. The rims will look better with golden color though!❤

And yes, get a 1.9 205
Review like a tuned toyota rav4 would be pretty funny
Alfa Romeo 155 Q4 or 2.5 V6 would be nice
It has a faster 0-100 than my 20 year old A4, thats one peppy machine!
I knew a guy who had this car with the VR6.
That’s a common type of swap
@@xXAlmdudlerXx yep
comfortcontacts better than eco contacts from continental
at first glance the speedo seems bouncy and inaccurate but its actually spot on lmao
Peugeot 309 gti please
Next MK2 ?
Watching from the UK, I really enjoy your videos and this one was great, you definitely conveyed it well, hope to see you get some interesting retro metal to review!
