    Thank you Doris so much for this informative explanation. I have heard about the risks and it have allways scarried me from working with oil because of the self flamable risk. Have all most keept to acryl, watercolor and charcoal sketches. But now after seen this video I feel little bit more safer to try out and can work more with oil. Thank you for this video!😇🙏👏💛

    I think about this all the time! I have been painting for nearly two decades now and never took the fire safety seriously (nor did I completely understand it) until about a year ago. So worrisome! Since learning of the dangers I take my painting process much more seriously and am considering additionally moving over to a solvent-free (or limited solvent) studio process. Thank you for spreading this knowledge! It is very worrying to think of how many parents allow their children / teens to start oil painting without proper knowledge. It is a LOVELY craft, but important to know the dangers and how to avoid or minimalize them!

      Thank u so much !! ✨ I can’t believe I left art school without fully realizing the extent of the fire hazard! I didn’t want to scare folks away from oil painting with this video but create awareness of how to do it safely-especially in your own home!! ❤️

    I think this is the reason i love your TH-cam site. You think about a problem and give the solution, all in one place, not as an aside, or hidden so far down, etc. you get my drift. It’s taken me a long time to find all this information. Hardly anyone gives upfront advice on the oily rag problem for example.

      Thank you so much!!! ✨That’s genuinely what I want to achieve in my videos cuz I often get frustrated looking for information online and finding a lot of resources aren’t really efficient with information. 🤗

    Hi, will this principle apply when you using acrylic paint . If you use alot of paper towels to wipe paint of? Thanks

    • @dorisroseart
      @dorisroseart  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, it really just applies to the use of oil medium so acrylic paints do not carry the same risk.

    hello miss doris what metal container is the best?

    • @dorisroseart
      @dorisroseart  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I use a just rite safety bin which I got from Amazon but really any air-tight metal container works like a large cookie tin or something :)

    Is this the same for water mixable oils?

    • @dorisroseart
      @dorisroseart  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it really depends on the amount of oil medium you use. It’s a good practice to get into no matter what but the more oil in the rag the more risk of fire.

      @@dorisroseart ah thank you. I use a Daler rowney water mixable oil medium so I don’t know if that is the same but I will be careful. Do you also know if it is safe to pour down the sink? I have some paint waters sat unsure if I should store them and send to hazardous waste or they are to just go down the drain

    • @dorisroseart

      I’m not actually sure what the difference is with disposing of water mixable oils paint water. It’s best to avoid anything going down the drain & good to wipe as much off your brush into paper towels before cleaning in water. Acrylic painters sometimes let water evaporate so they can throw the remaining paint away (in the regular trash or household hazardous waste which is best) or use kits to break down the chemicals in an eco way. Where as oil painters wait for sludge and solvent to separate in the jar.
      This is what I found looking up how to dispose of water-mixable oils but u may want to explore this further: ‘Many artists now rinse their brushes and dump the rinse water into a plastic bottle or barrel with a tight fitting cap. These containers can then be taken to local hazardous waste drop-offs. Some experts believe that letting the water evaporate and disposing of the dried pigment that cakes at the bottom of the rinse bucket is safe for landfills.’

      Looks like Daler-Rowney Georgian Water Mixable Oil Mediums has linseed and stand oil in it so it would be the same fire hazard as regular painting mediums :)
