    One thing that Bangkok buses have never changed is if you're waiting for the bus (like you're waiting for the 59), it would take ages. However, the next time if you're waiting for another bus number, you will see many 59 buses pass in front of you.

    • @FrugalTravellers

    FYI....if you're going to stay at Khaosan Rd and vicinity, take the S1 bus on level 1 gate 7. Bus fare is 60 baht. Bus ran every hours from 6:00 am to 8:00 pm.

    BTW-I recall those moving sidewalks at BKK! Very unusual. We also recall seeing a capsule hotel at BKK-similar to those in Tokyo. In my younger days, I thought they’d be an adventure. Now…not so much. Rather have a regular bed. 😅😅 Safe travels.

    Thanks for the nice video.
    You can be even a little bit more adventerous if you want to go from Suvarnabhumi airport to Khaosan Road: Take the Airport Rail Link (ARL) to Ramkhamhaeng Station (four stops, I think 30Baht), leave the ARL a d walk to the Khlong Saen Saep (short walk, not more than 100m). From the pier take the Khlong boat westwards (the one going to the left when reaching the pier) to the final stop Panfa Leelard. You have to change the boat at Pratunam, but you use the same ticket (must be around 22Baht from Ramkhamhaeng). From Panfa Leelard Pier it is around 15 to 20min walk to Khaosan Road.
    But! Don't do it in Rush hour, as the boats inbound become really crowded in the morning. You probably don't want to do that if you have heavy luggage, too.

    • @FrugalTravellers
      @FrugalTravellers  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for this wonderful information. It sounds like a fun trip. We love to travel on the Khlongs. It would be a nice introduction to Bangkok for a new arrival. We did a video travelling from Panfa pier to Pratunam before. It's a great trip.

    I enjoyed your video, but this was definitely NOT how to head into the Khao San area in regards to budget or time. The S1 bus is 60 baht and depending on traffic can certainly be less than two hours. Someone gave you some bad info there. Bad traffic time for the airport bus is also going to be a bad traffic time for a city bus. And from Victory Monument you’d have been better off walking around the circle and finding the big stop and taken the 509. More frequent in my experience.

      Thanks for the comment. We love to explore new places so don't mind the longer journeys that get us meeting the locals. You are so right though, a taxi is much faster. 😂

    Thailand started bus service in Bangkok nearly 100 years ago, it was run by private bus operators at a reasonable price but still making a decent profit. However, about 45 years ago, a certain political party campaigned to make bus in Bangkok free and when this party came to power as a coalition govt, it nationalized bus services, buying the private operators and created Bangkok Mass Transport Authority (BMTA) to run a free bus service for a few years. When the govt could no longer afford the huge annual subsidy, it allowed the BMTA to charge a cheap ticket price for non-aircon buses and then introduced air-con buses at 2-3 times the price of non-aircon buses. The non-aircon buses have been running at a loss since then up to today while the air-con buses run at break-even. The BMTA then granted private bus operators to run non-aircon and air-con buses again about 30 years ago to reduce the BMTA's mounting debts as private operators seem to know how to run buses at a decent profit even though they charge the same ticket fares as BMTA's own buses. To this day, BMTA non-aircon red/orange buses are still relatively cheap at 8 baht, one of the cheapest fare in the world. Every year, the national govt allocates a supplementary budget to shore up BMTA's inefficient operation. It is apparent that the first populist policy of Thai govt does not work as is the case worldwide such as the bankrupted Venezuela and the father of populist policy Argentina which seeks IMF help at least 6 times since WWII.
    Note: The best way to get around Bangkok by bus is to load Viabus app and you will thank heavy if you do. Since early this year, there is an aircon electric bus service (Thai Smile Bus) running dozens of routes in Bangkok under BMTA's concession. Bus fare depends on distance. You can pay by fill-in Hopper card bought from bus conductor or cash. Right now there is a 40-baht all day promotion if you pay by Hopper card. Even if the fare exceeds 40 baht, you pay only 40 baht. It's great if you plan to tour Bangkok using this promotion. You can also download TSB app to know when a particular bus is coming at your bus stop. The Hopper card can also be used at Thai Smile Boat service at a flat rate of 20 baht for all distance. The promotion also includes 50-baht for bus/boat combined service right now.

    you did it the hard way, there is a bus from the airport to khao san road, just 60 baht and one bus trip. But hey, you had an adventure!

      You are spot on there! We followed the suggestion from a blog post we'd read, and it certainly was an adventure, especially after we realised the blog post was written in 2018 😂. We then learned about the easy S1 bus, and made this video about our return trip. Much easier!
