"Khao Soi" is not Burmese food but from Chinese Muslim from Yunnan State. You can notice that there's no pork meat in it (chicken or beef). It was clear soup until Thai put coconut milk and added local herbal with it. Along with chili paste, lime, shallot and pickled Chinese mustard as side dish. FYI & Bon Appétit.
Thanks for this awesome explanation. It really is delicious and I love the Thai slant on the flavour. We'll keep coming back for more. 😋
I am Thai and this information is correct.
@@GipsyDean It's fusion food by replacing Braised pork in it. To be honest with you, the taste of that meat will destroy original flavor of Khao Soi itself.
Happy to see you both were happy in Thailand, amazing experience.
Yes, thank you, we were so very happy in amazing Thailand 😁🙏❤️

Right now the weather in Chiang Mai is probably cool. Suitable for foreigners from cold weather countries. You guys will like this weather.
Thanks for sharing this information. We were in Chiang Mai in February and the weather was perfect for us... we definitely prefer the cooler winter weather 😁😃
ยินดีต้อนรับค่ะ🙏

Both of you are so lovely. This clip is really good.

It's such a great pleasure to visit your wonderful country. 🙏😍
Just found your channel. Really love your videos! I’m headed to Bangkok and Chiang Mai in January!
Hope you enjoyed it there. Thailand is amazing 😍
I miss Chiang Mai! You have to go to Kanomjeen Sanpakoi in Sanpakoi market and also Nice Moo Satay on Changklan rd across from the Astra…my 2 favorite restaurants in CM
Oh, thank you so much for these recommendations. We'll make a note of them for our next visit. 😁👍

🥰Thank you for sharing.Khao Soi is one of my favorite Thai dishes!🤤💕
Isn’t Khao Sai delicious! Keep watching, as there's a whole video devoted to Khao Soi coming soon 😁😀
🎉Welcome to Thailand❤
Thank you 🙏 We love Thailand ❤️
sorry about the wallet situation, good video as always I've noticed there are many comments (under the video) in thai🤔obviously I don't understand none of it but I like how their alphabet looks.
Hello Pocahoetaz! Thank you so much for another lovely comment. It was a bit of an inconvenience to be sure re: Lee losing his wallet, but it's taught him to only buy trousers etc with deep pockets 😁😃 Thai script is so beautiful! We get a Translate to English option under the Thai comments, so it's great to be able to respond to the viewers, even if it's in English 😀🤗
I’m not sure if it’s a mobile-only thing but there is a Translate to English option underneath every foreign comment, at least on my iPad. But not on my Mac.
@@Wizerud yes I discovered it recently but thank you :)
Chiang Mai was founded more than 700 years ago. Make sure to visit the Walking Street on Sunday. Khao soi original is not from Myanmar
Thank you for sharing this great information 🙏😁
The internet in Thailand is very fast, possibly among the fastest globally, due to the extensive cable, as you might have seen in that video clip. Currently, the government is planning to put everything underground as it seems quite messy above ground. Therefore, if you visit Chiang Mai now, you might see road excavations within the city, and some roads may not be smooth. We apologize for any inconvenience caused
Yes the internet was very impressive there. They are doing a great job in Thailand. It will be great if the cables go underground. We love Chiang Mai for what it is and will happily return again and again. ❤️
@@FrugalTravellersin my opinion it is better with the cables bunched together and messy over everyone's head. I like the cultural change from it being tidy. Thailand will eventually look the same as every other country
@@traveladdict4884 That's actually a very good point! We agree with you! 😃😁
would love if you could put aud into the prices too! new sub! can’t wait to watch the rest of your videos, hopefully my partner and I will be living similar lives to you one day!
That's a great suggestion, and I know my Kiwi family would also appreciate prices in NZD! If viewer numbers go up to 5% from either Oz or NZ we'll do it... but are under 1% at the moment. Thank you though for your kind comment 🤗🙏 ~ Mandy
I hope you visit Iraq I will wait you cool your videos ❤
Thank you so much! Hopefully sometime soon 😁😃
Ok if you want coming please tell me i will show you my city beautiful just tell me I give you my instagram ♥️ welcome anytime
The messy tangling black lines usually mistaken by most people as power lines are communication lines, some are currently in used and some are not, but all are difficult to remove by the responsible communication companies. So, they're usually just left up there, and hence the mess. The power lines are up above on a higher level.
Ah, that's great to know. I didn't realise that. Makes sense. Thanks for the heads up. 🙏👍
In fact, Khao Soy's origin came from Muslim Yunnan immigrants who migrated to Thailand and Burma. So both countries have something similar. One might note that Khao Soy does not come with pork but chicken or beef because Muslim don't eat pork. BTW, there are a few shops selling khao soy in Bangkok.
This is the traditional tale - but I'd argue that the truth is that no one knows, it's possible to get khao soi muu, even additional variants exist such as khao soi ka muu (pork leg khao soi) and khao soi luk chin muu (khao soi with pork meatballs) though I grant you that beef and chicken are most prevalent. Look at Burmese 'o no kha swe", one could easily argue, as many do, that this is the origin of khao soi in Thailand via the Shan peoples (Shan supposedly being a misrepresentation of the word ' Siam'), but it's more complex than that - the movement of people and the basis of a dish are often-times not as black and white as we would like. Khao soi is an amalgamation of ingredients, people and tastes condensed now into supposedly a single dish. As a long time 'brapet neua' resident I would argue that there are multiple interpretations of khao soi across the north of Thailand itself, go to Lampang and the khao soi will be different to that which you get in CM, even within CM the range is staggering
The Chinese food in Thailand is also delicious, you CAN try it and there are also a large proportion of Teochew descendants (Chinese)in Thailand 🇹🇭.
We love the noodle soups in Thailand, which I was told came from China.
Chiang mai is weather as well as
The weather in February was perfect for us 😃😊

Hi guys great to get some tips in Chang Mai as I am going there on 20th January. The Tapae Inn too. Can't wait to go. I thought you were in the Philippines right now?
Hello Harry! Great to hear this video was helpful... there'll be a few more to come from our time in Chiang Mai. Yes, we're in the Philippines now. I take so much footage that our videos are always months behind real time... ie 5 days in Bahrain resulted in 7 Bahrain videos shown over almost 2 months, so we're always behind 😁🤣 ~ Mandy
I know the problem. I had about 8 videos to edit after my trip to Hanoi and the area, which I am still working through. It keeps me busy after my travels though.
@HarrysHappenings I love having loads of footage stockpiled but Lee not so much, as he has a tidy mind and would prefer to be more up to date. I just find it difficult to refrain from videoing everything 😁🤣 ~ Mandy
@FrugalTravellers I know the feeling. I don't so much effort into the actual filming with info as you do, but for you it is an income generator. I strive to film and edit better which I love. I have just bought a cheap drone for my Asian trips, this should add more interest to my videos
I wonder whether Khao Soy is quite similar to Lak Sa dish in Malaysia.
That's a great question! I absolutely love Singapore laksa, as opposed to Penang laksa, but the main similarity to Khao Soi is the coconut milk. To me, Khao Soi is a smaller dish, with more of a curry flavour than laksa, and with fewer additional bits. I call laksa a party in a bowl 😀😁 ~ Mandy
Question is it chilly there in the morning?
It depends on the time of year. It was chilly in the mornings when we were there in February.
How long will you be in Chiang Mai? I'm living here until March.
We're actually in the Philippines now. We were in Thailand in February... that's how much video footage we take! Our videos are always months behind where we are in real life 😁😀
@@FrugalTravellers Enjoy the Philippines! It's a lovely country.
ขอบคุณ ที่เที่ยวประเทศไทย thank you
Thank you! We absolutely love Thailand ❤️😍
Great budgeting. Is Lee still recording everything?
Are you finding the Philippines as affordable? I think you have been there before.
Ethiopia 🇪🇹 was stunningly beautiful and I enjoyed meeting the different tribal people. I collected 4 different languages in my languages book too.
Hi Julie. Yes I keep a note of what we're spending. Thailand came in at great value, Philippines no so much at this stage. Travel and accommodation is more expensive but food around the same.
Ethiopia is so diverse and an incredible experience. Glad you had such a fantastic experience. 👍
don't forget to tip people, like vendors, for filming them please.
You're the first person to make that suggestion, and we thank you for it.
Yes i dislike everyone shoving camera in Thai vendors face! Its beyond...a tip is the respecful gesture n minimum!
@@lecannet Most definitely. 👍. The vendors we feature we have normally visited on numerous occasions and end up becoming good friends and exchanging contacts. It's a lovely way to interact and we always ask permission in advance. ❤️
@@lecannet Thai vendors don't find it offensive. If they do, they will tell you.
@@lecannet Tipping is not expected by the vendors.

You should try both Kaw Soi and Nam Ngaew.
Thank you! We try a few more Khao Soi but not Nam Ngaew
Are you still in Chiang Mai? We live here and would love to meet up.
We're in the Philippines at the moment! We were in Thailand in February... that's how much footage we have to edit, as we're always months behind real time. Thank you for the invitation though 😃😁

Thank you for sharing this great information 🙏😁 We did try Northern Larb, but not the others. More videos to come from Chiang Mai 😀😁
Khao Soi is not a dish that originated from Myanmar, but its roots can be traced back to Muslim Chinese origins. When it was introduced to the northern region of Thailand, it underwent significant adjustments and improvements. Coconut milk was added, resulting in the delicious Khao Soi that is distinctively different from its original version. Therefore, you won't find the exact same Khao Soi elsewhere. You should try Khao Soi from nearby restaurants as each place offers a different taste."
I love this excellent information about Khao Soi! I'm happy to report that there'll soon be a Khao Soi Challenge video coming... once Lee and I decide who is going to make it 😁😃 ~ Mandy
Heard Chiang Mai is the most polluted city ? Any thoughts ?
You have to be careful what time of year you go because if they are burning off the crops the air is thick with smoke and quite unpleasant. 😌

Thank you for your lovely comment 🙏😁
I pay 35 B for Khao soi.

Hahhha... they're a bit different to electrical wires in New Zealand 😁🤣
Go to chiang rai even better
Thank you for the advice. Next time we'll go to Chiang Rai.
The sad truth about Thailand is their quite costly financial requirements in order to get those low prices or visa runs which can also be expensive & the government is changing it constantly it seems. It appears they don't really want you there for a long time ? Huge disadvantage for many expats ! > Cambodia is a lot more visa friendly cheap and easy - it's just incredible !!!
We enjoyed our time in Cambodia but Thailand has my heart ❤ It's the food, my favourite in the world, the language, so much fun to learn, and the people, so many wonderful people! I understand why Cambodia works for you, but it would be Thailand for me all the way 🤗😀
Lost your wallet? Or wallet stolen? Chiang Mai not that cheap compared to outskirts of Bangkok.
Hello Jay and Sarah! It was definitely lost... Lee's pockets in those shorts were way too shallow, and the wallet must have fallen out after paying for the bus tickets. M To avoid that happening again he bought a new pair of shorts in Chiang Mai 😁😀
nice!

Watching the vendor holding the mango in his bare hand, slicing it, then taking your money, made us wonder about hygiene. Did that concern you generally?
Roger
Hello Roger. That never occurred to us, and I'm happy to report we didn't have a single stomach issue during our 3 weeks of feasting on street food in Thailand 😁😃
In Puerto Morelos, Mexico, we used to buy a beautiful mango concoction but the young man never touched the fruit with his bare hands as he skinned it so we enjoyed it several times with full confidence.

Thank you for taking the time to comment. We prefer paying cash where possible.
The word you are looking for is affordable. There is nothing cheap about the experience or quality you receive in Thailand!
Thank you for your feedback. This is a great example of the different usages of words in the English-speaking world. You may have read the word "cheap" as inferior quality or worth, whereas we use it to mean low in price; and the opposite of expensive. I agree that the quality and value for money in Thailand is excellent!
@@FrugalTravellers yet the world affordable cannot be misconstrued in that way.
Spend some money. Why do you have to be so cheap? How are you helping the local economy?
The answer is in our channel name and our description. We have a budget of US$25 per day each, and that includes flights and insurance, and we stick to that.
