    This is a fabulous plunger mute tutorial and also a great introduction to the pixie mute! I really appreciate the history lesson of how the great trumpeters played with these mutes! Thank you for sharing this!

    This is that vintage sound I've been looking for on the cornet, but I didn't know it was called a mute. Thanks for the tips!

    One very important plunger-mute guy who rarely gets mentioned is R.Q. Dickerson who played on the Early recordings of Cab Calloway and also The Missourians band in the 20s, before they became Cab's Orchestra. He's right up there with Bubber Miley and Cootie Williams. Listen to his work on the 1927 Andy Preer recording of "I Found a New Baby", the Misssourians' 1930 recording of "Prohibition Blues", Cab Calloway's 1930 recordings of "St. Louis Blues", "Is that Religion?", "Some of these Days", and of course, the classic 1931 original version of "Minnie the Moocher" to hear what I'm talking about :)

    Thanks for explaining the pixie/plunger technique. When I heard this sound in old recordings I always assumed people were using the harmon mute with the wow-wow plunger inserted. I usually use my harmon/wow-wow to get that tinny vintage'y sound, but the pixie plunger sounds a little fatter and seems to make sense now. Must ebay a pixie...

    I always liked the way Tyree Glenn's trombone sounded with a plunger mute. He used a pixie mute with his plunger mute. I was able to play that same sound on my trumpet using a round Shedd's Country Crock 15 oz butter tub. I always experimented with various tubs and cups to get a different sound but I was happy when I emulated the exact sound of Tyree Glenn using a round Country Crock butter tub.

      JazzFan76 cool! Good idea. There’s another video I did in this series where I demonstrate using other things in place of a plunger. Tyree was wonderful!

      @@JonErikKellso yes he was. I enjoy his music with Louis Armstrong. I will look for it. Funny thing is I can't use a plunger or cup or tub if I play the trumpet because my arms are too short and don't reach so I use my cornet. 🎺 I should have said cornet in my original comment.

    • @JonErikKellso
      @JonErikKellso 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      JazzFan76 cornet is a smart solution in that case

      Cool! Jabbo is a lot of fun to listen to. Another favorite cornet player of mine is Rex Stewart, who also played with Ellington and made brilliant use of the plunger/"pixie" type mute combination.

    At around 5:50 you had such a growly sound come out. I'm trying to get an Ellington-style solo in my band. Could you tell me how you did that? Thanks!

      I was double tonguing. Just before that I was growling and shaking the note at the same time, to me, that’s more like a tremolo, maybe that’s what you were asking about.

    Jon-Erik Kellso is just stealing ideas from black musicians. This guy can't really swing. It just doesn't sound right. Wynton I know you're a busy man...but Jon-Erik? Really?
