This is the first obelisk I've seen for this challenge that actually looks passable - the technique might could be re-worked a bit to be a bit more accessible/cleaner, but this actually looks *fantastic* and like an actual obelisk.

Gonna be honest, the tan brick at the top looks like a golden tip, which is a very obelisk thing
The real Washington monument has an aluminum tip. When it was built, aluminum was newly discovered and we didn't have good techniques for smelting it, so it was very valuable at the time (comparable to silver). Very soon after the monument was finished, a better method of producing aluminum was discovered and the metal became much cheaper like it is today.
For the Lego version you could reference this by having the tip piece be either silver or light bluish gray depending on what exists.
This is a LOT better, and its honestly almost flawless. The little gaps aren't a problem at all. The only thing I would personally change is to have 1x1 round plates where the crossbeams mate, so that there isn't any stress on the skinny rectangular plates holding the frame together. Right now, LEGO would call it an "illegal" build because you are bending the plates, even if its only a miniscule amount.

There's a reason stressing Lego pieces is considered illegal, but it really does allow for some amazing things!
I could do the same shape with hinges and all legal techniques, it would work. But I like the strength of this better.
Couldn't you use a rounded stud where you had the red square 1x1s?

It is great. When you finish it, you should submit it to ideas for next year. The powers that be and the rest of the Internet should like and vote for it. It looks like it's almost the size of the Apollo 5 rocket. Which is just under 41". I just love how you use math to do some of these things. We should all be more math fluent. It's just brilliant! Don't ever stop!
Yes simular is size to the Saturn V set. Unfortunately scale wise not the same. Saturn V was 360ish feet tall if my memory is correct monument is 555 feet.
Right. I still would buy one. How big would it be if the same scale as Apollo 5? For some reason I'm thinking only about five or five and a half feet tall.and the base would still fit on a 16x16 plate. It's not my best math morning though. I'm always better at math in the afternoon.

I'm afraid this falls under illegal techniques. Even tho it's very gradual, the slightly off angles still put some amount of stress on the pieces.

You sharing progress sort of real time is really refreshing for watching youtube videos. Really clever accepting that it can't be perfect, and then focusing on the corners that the eye is drawn most to. It would be cool to see a full obelisk with the 1x2 plates making brick-like corners. You could also properly make the corners completely flush and not have that small indentation, but then you would have to do the sides a bit asymmetric and it would be more challenging and less sturdy. What you have made is the best looking by far, but given that the obelisk is a bit uncharted territory for brick building, there must be all kinds of ways to build it, we just haven't discovered it by now.

I am not with any LEGO at the moment but I couldn't help myself to think about it, and I have found a very nice way to make a smooth corner that then overlaps with the sides by 1/2 tile. So there is a bit of overlap, but in exchange you get no gaps. I got inspired by your long pillar of 1x1 corner snot bricks.
So, I'll try to explain it:
You take a 1x1 snot brick with 2 studs on adjacent sides. You connect a 1x4 panel piece on either side. This panel piece provides the overhang. Then you can use different smooth plates to get under the overhang but not more than 2 plates under. (this is the overhang of the 1x4 panel piece).
I don't really know how to connect the corners with the rest of the structure, but maybe you can do it every time there is an equal amount of studs across like in your model. Hopefully this sparks some ideas! At the bottom and the top, you can properly connect the corners with some hinge pieces.

What’s really great about this channel is the fact that you share more then just the final product. You share the design process, failed ideas, comment suggestions, and the best solution you’ve found.
I look at other channels to get build inspiration, and I look to yours to learn.
The top of The Washington monument is not white Stone. It is a Pyramid of pure aluminum. At the time it was built, it was the most expensive metal in the world. So there is nothing wrong with that piece being a different color, gray or silver would be ideal. As for the sides awesome project, it looks great. The corners are perfection. If you could fill in the windows of the plates on the side either recessed or overlapping, you could use normal rectangular areas and not worry about filling in all the gaps.
Yeah I don't want recessed or overlapping because it will take away from the shape. I would rather have the shape perfect with small gaps than no gaps and a non perfect shape.

@@bricksculptMaybe a half-sphere/true dome? Other than purpose-built parts, it's difficult to achieve that shape using LEGO.

So, this is off subject. I recently had my siding replaced on my house. A friend suggested i make new numbers for it out of Lego, because they didn't replace the old tile ones, they just left a piece of the old siding with the numbers attached. So, after an attempt at making the numbers eith NPU, my friend said i should just do it with bricks. And after using balck and white bricks and a 16x32 baseplate, I really am pleased after adhering them to my new siding.
I went with a basic type style 12 studs long and each number has a different width ranging from 2 by 12 for the one and 8x12 for the biggest digit. It's so great for many reasons. Adding a bit of classic Lego fun to my brand new looking house being the main one. 12 studs long is just a hair over 3 ¾ inches tall making the new numbers more than one inch larger than the ceramic tile ones. I actually like making stuff that's usable such as floating shelves to mount baseplates to, the space station with 52 lights to replace a chandelier and these house numbers. I just wanted to thank you personally for the inspiration to simply try my hand at realistic stuff. Thanks.
I've been kicking around the idea of building a mailbox out of Lego instead of buying one. Using mostly technic parts but covered with large plates. It's gotta have moving parts
12:18 For the final assembly last side, you could use like floss or sewing thread wrapped around each section , put them in and line it up and pull outward to snap it in to place, then pull it free. Should have enough space to pull it through those tiny gaps. Looks fantastic, looking forward to seeing the end resuly

The tip of the real Washington Monument is capped by a solid aluminum block (At the time, aluminum was really hard to get. Later someone invented a process to get the element from the ore cheaply, but not then) - so a silver tip might be better than white.

Stumbled across the first obelisk video and now seeing this one and it’s fantastic improvement. It looks amazing and to give you some peace of mind, the Washington Monument actually has an aluminum apex so you shouldn’t have to find that piece in white.

frankly I prefer the sand coloured cap piece, reminds me of the golden tops of the pyramids and such. it's a very good contrasting detail
This build is magnificent! Not sure if it’s worth your time to make it legal but if you would just put 1x4 hinge plates or rounded 1x3 plates at the corners of the frames, you could submit this to Lego ideas!

I have to replicate this (thankfully at a smaller scale for a smaller building) to recreate a lighthouse near me in Maine. I was literally pondering how to make a good obelisk and this video just appeared! Incredible work.
Not sure if it would screw up the strength of the frame, but personally I might just make a single 100 stud long “beam” going up each side of each frame, then attach those hinge plates on the backs at 22 stud intervals. Hard to explain in text but it would eliminate the awkward 2x9 and 2x8 sections in the middle of the monument :)

Absolutely amazing. All I’ll say is there’s some visible bending towards the built side- hopefully it gets fixed when all sides are added or which a central strong interior column. But all round the best I’ve ever seen

if you have large enough holes in the wall structure, you could probably stick a tool in to PULL the part attached, and then cover the hole with a plate
oh, that is super impressive. You are absouletely right, the straight edges makes it 100% better! I might have to reconsider my version now. Will be a fun challenge since my design is only 3x3 plates at the very top, so hardly any room for filling gaps inside :)

Im working on incorporating jumpers into my snotwork, and you can achieve a one eight of a plate difference. So in theory u can make the steps have even even smoother transitions

Personally, I prefer the first one. The second one has a lot of gaps which makes me prefer the former. However, I must say that the second one is a lot more challenging!

Very neat! The thing I keep coming back to in my mind is the possibility of using the official LEGO hole punch with some thick paper or cardstock cut just right. But that wouldn't be very structural...

Instead of building it in 22 stud segments you could build each side in full height of 88 studs with 8 stud base and 4 stud top using only 4 hinges, and every 22 studs you can have the proper size 1 wide plate for support, that way you could possibly build all 4 sides then attached them to each other, also doing it this way could make it a legal build as well

:) Well I am looking to the two different designs on my desk that I tried after your first video. But your new approach is better than both, especially with this scale and slope.
One of them is a similar approach where I made a random 11 studs to 6 studs frame with hinge plates. And tried to fill it like you did starting from the corners. Than I hide the artifacts in the middle by placing a horizontal 2x 21 plate with tiles (2 plate high) and used the rail plates as the first layer to make the 2 plate height less visible.
And made the neigbour frame but 1 studs smaller from the sides where I put panels, so it sits on the first frame the make the corner.
It looks like an ornamented version of an obeliks or a starwars structure right now.
The second design was the study of the possibility of using the new 6x1 slope. But the result was more like a native american tent than an obeliks.

This is a great solution, I just don't know about connecting the corners since the angle is ever so slightly larger than 90 degrees. But if it works in a physical model, it's obviously worth it for the strength!

I'm glad this and the last obelisk video came across my feed! I've been wanting to make a large scale map of Louisiana, but the northern border isn't perfectly straight, it bends slightly north from the 33rd parallel as you go west from the Mississippi River, and would necessitate a taper of about 125 to 1. I was worried I'd have to resort to the half plate technique, but I might try to reconsider that and make something smoother

You could theoretically use slopes instead between each layers instead of flat transitions on the first design.

Making instructions for this would obviously be a nightmare, but perhaps you could have a livestream where you take one side of the obelisk apart, piece by piece, so people could see all the pieces that go into each section.

I’m a hater of illegal building techniques but that end result looks too good and I think the bricks will be fine
I tend to think he may not have had enough hinge pieces for his test as it looks like it should be workable with hinges top and bottom. Guess we'll have to watch the next video ;)
Yeah me too. I could easily build it with all hinges and make it Legal but it's tighter fitting this way and uses less pieces so I stuck with it. Might change it in the future so it's legal.

I love this new technique! I was impressed with the last one for sure but this is amazing! I find that the larger the build the less noticeable the micro gaps are. Definitely going to be reusing this technique for a few builds of my own

an interesting idea, dont put the sideways plates onto the studs snugly, so the only gap is between them which would look thinner due to the white too

This is an incredible upgrade from your last video! I had an idea watching this, that I'm sure you already considered, but here we go anyways:
if you were to use only 2x2 tiles and dimensions instead of 2x4 tiles across the whole build, it could help blend the gaps as each brick seen on the outside would have the same 2x2 dimensions (or at least 2 studs tall) making it a perfect grid system to hide any gaps inside of. the taller 2x4 gaps mixed with 2x2 snot plates makes it loot a bit more messy and obvious where the gaps are.
Yeah I thought of that but 1 it's a lot of pieces 2 the edges won't stay as straight and 3 I already have 2x4 tiles... lots of them from the pab wall. 😁
Hm it would leave 2 raised lines per side but you could use 1 stud tall brackets with panels on them to overlap the gaps. Looks really solid!

If you were to overlap the corners making a 9 wide at the very bottom, you could make the thickness even out to 10 studs from the overlap, just an idea and im not sure how it would work but with the knowledge you have im sure you could make it work

That's a huge improvement! All you need for the shaft is to get those brackets in white. I also think it's worth getting the cap piece in white, even if that Bricklink store says it's slightly discolored. It's still better than tan, or, god forbid, spray-paint.

You should get it in gray instead of tan. The top of the Washington Monument is made of aluminum not White stone.

Since the last time I've thought of another idea: you can get all sorts of weird angles if you use all 3 dimensions to get it instead of 2. Like, even if you use the 3x1x1 slope, you are not restricted to have them in ,🇧🇹 this sort of agreement. Instead, you could rotate one of them to get a greater number of slopes.
Interesting concept
You know, when the filled out side was facing forward and the not filled out side was just barely visible it almost made it look like those sides had stained glass in them.

If you used a stud in place of the red 1×1 and again at the bottom where the L joint is you would have enough play to make this build "legal" again by not putting stress on the pieces

the gaps in the faces
they are dark because you see what's behind the gaps - a hollow dark box
those gaps might be 10% less dark if they are covered by a second layer of white
that is just behind the front facing surfaces
[or what if you put an LED bulb in there lul, giant fire hazard lamp shade]
Yeah I might try that at the end but it might not change much.
