  • Ever wondered about the magic behind Threadlifts and Facelifts? 💫 Dr. Raynald Torres, Head Cosmetic Surgeon at The Raynald Center explains.
Is your face starting to sag ?... and you are choosing between getting a thread lift or a surgical facelift but don't know the difference? Then watch me explain.
Hi! I'm Dr Raynald Torres, head cosmetic surgeon at the Raynald Center. I do both threads and surgical lifts and I will share with you my unbiased opinion on both these procedures.
Let us first look at the aging face:
    -Loss of skin elasticity
    -Loss of volume
    -Pigmentation
Threads and facelifts address the sagging tissues. I usually combine procedures that address the loss of volume (fillers, fat graft ) and lasers and skin boosters for fine wrinkles, poor skin elasticity, and pigmentation.
First, let me explain what is a surgical facelift…
A surgical facelift is a procedure that surgically tightens your face. It is the gold standard of lifting your face and all other procedures are measured up to this. It offers excellent results, especially in patients with a lot of excess skin.
This is done by cutting away loose skin and tightening the tissues under the skin to lift it up.
The disadvantage of this procedure is that since it is a surgical procedure, there is a longer recovery time, there may be some scarring, and the costs more.

    Now let's talk about threads…
A thread lift is a non-surgical procedure where dissolvable threads are inserted under the skin
The threads have two mechanisms of action
One is a slight mechanical lifting and tightening of the face. Another is by biostimulation. Threads attract collagen. This collagen that is deposited around the threads replaces the lost collagen and elastic tissue of your skin making it more plump and elastic.
There are two types of dissolvable threads
In the past, there were permanent threads that had a lot of complications
Presently threads re-emerged that are dissolvable. The popular threads are made out of PDO which lasts about 12 months and my personal preference, is PLLA threads made by Aptos which not only have more pulling power and collagen stimulation, but they can last a bit longer. From 18 months to 2 years.
Since threads are nonsurgical, are they effective?
Overall, patient satisfaction, though not 100 % is still relatively high and is still worth the treatment . Remember that even a surgical facelift has no 100% satisfaction. It all boils down to your expected goals and choosing the right treatment for the right condition. A threadlift is not a facelift. If you have lots of excess skin and expecting a really tight face after, then a threadlift is not for you.
Who are the best candidates for a thread lift?
    1. Patients who have good skin elasticity and no excess skin. Try pulling up your face. If it lifts but there is no excess skin, then you can benefit from a thread lift
    2. Patients who are just starting to have signs of drooping of the face and would like to slow down the aging process.
    3. If you are willing to repeat the procedure because the threads dissolve. However, because there is no down time, it is worth doing it with multiple sessions
    4. Patients who have undergone a surgical lift in the past and want to maintain the longevity of their lift
    5. Patients who have comorbidity and are not fit for surgery
    6. Patients who do not want any downtime
    7. Patients who are afraid of undergoing surgery
Who are the candidates for a facelift?
    1. Patients who have excess skin and poor skin elasticity
    2. Patients who would like to have a more drastic outcome
    3. Patients in good health
Some tips for lifting your face…
Always choose high-quality threads. cheap threads break easily and do not last long
It is good to do other rejuvenating procedures with a thread lift. I like combining it with fillers to address the hollowness.
Even with a surgical lift, I prefer to combine fat as a filler for those hollowed areas
It is also good to treat skin texture and pigmentation with Botox, lasers, and skin boosters.
Remember aging is a continuous process. Consistency in caring for your skin will provide better and lasting results.
