- Sooo I started another project, I bought a (lightly) totaled 2000 Toyota 4Runner. The frame was bent on the front and the factory bumper was ruined. I decided to go with a steel offroad bumper to mount a winch since I plan to take it on some off road camping trips and trails. In this video I build and weld the bumper. I have to have her all ready to go in the next few weeks as we are going on a trip to Colorado. Stay tuned for more "Runner" content the first week of September!

Just got my bumper all tacked up, if my welds look half as good as yours I'll be happy. I have no idea what that weave pattern is but I will be searching now, looks great!
Awesome man! I hope it turns out good! Did you end up notching that plate that the winch sits on like I did? just curious because it seems kind of weird how it fits! Another tip is to make sure you weld up all the seams inside and out because if not it leaves a little void that the powder coat cant penetrate into. Mine sat in the rain for a day or two after powder and it got a tiny little bit of rust in that seam between the front plate and the winch plate (just below the fairlead on the inside) I cleaned it up and put some corrosion protection stuff in there.
@@AustinStout I did not cut that plate I removed the brace, but after watching your video I may put the brace back and cut the notch depending on which winch I choose. I havent started to weld the bumper up yet so thanks for the advice! I'm still undecided on powder coat vs paint and have a bunch of other work to do before I get to finishing the bumper.
Better go with the straight axle and a 3” lift

I’m not a good welder nor am I much of a metal fabricator. That said I am an engineer, years of experience in design and love building stuff. I don’t get the design of this. I was interested in this bumper for my hilux surf. I think you did a great job modifying it and keeping that little structural piece around your radiator. I think it will work well for most applications but! This design throws major red flags. Like why are they not giving you welding nuts. It’s obviously plasma cut why not slot and tab a lot of construction to get the angles perfect? Why is the mount to the frame a single cantilevered plate? Why is there no ditch for fillets on some of the exterior. Why are the recovery points 3 layers instead of one single layer. To me this just screams lazy follow through with perfecting the design. I’ll say it does look pretty nice though.
I’m the opposite of you, I’ve done a bit of fab but only a little bit of design work but I didn’t get some of those things either? It does seem to be laziness especially with the tow hook plates. Easier to cut 3 of the same part on the same sheet instead of putting a different sheet on the table to do 1/2” or so. It would have been so much nicer not only for strength but for rust. Same deal with that brace with how they want you to cut it out and the fact that it won’t fit around the ac line. I was also dissapointed there wasn’t any tabs and notches. The place I used to work did that on everything they designed and it was sooo much easier to build. Only thing I can think other than them not knowing or being lazy is something to do with fitment incase you have to adjust a little bit for each vehicle. I was actually the most disappointed they didn’t bend anything.
There could have been a couple of nice bent pieces in there but everything came flat.

just bought a 3rd Gen high clearance bumper kit for my 99 runner (still in it’s box) off Facebook marketplace.
Everything was there except for the instruction manual print out lol
I’ve tried to reach out to coastal off road a few times but they haven’t answered me…

I didn't even think about a pdf version! Unfortunately I didn't make an account when I bought my bumper and now it wont let me download anything. I woulda sent that right over if I had it! Maybe shoot them a dm on instagram??

Possibly next week! I’m finishing up the lift, control arms, shocks, wheels & tires this week! Im going on a trip to Colorado this weekend and I’ll have a vlog about that for sure 🤘🏼
