    I mean, if you have a double pedal, you can use that as a single pedal anytime. Every strength the single has, the double also has. So double pedal all the way.

    How is using a double pedal cheating any more than using two hands? Just because you have two pedals doesn't mean you have to use both of them all the time. Use what sounds best for the song.

    • @53xf
      @53xf 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I respect a lot double bass pedal drummers and have nothing against them, but when you are playing with your both hands you play several different colors and textures (cymbals, snare, toms) and when you use double pedal you are just playing the same color twice, that provides you of control and strenght but zero independence, is more creative to be playing a total different pattern either with your hi hat pedal or with a percussion pedal on your left than with another bass drum, that's my humble opinion but once again and just like you said, use what sounds best for the song

      There's a time and a place for both. I personally can play 16ths just about as quick with a single as a double pedal. There is no way that you are gonna get 5s 7s and 9s on a single pedal though! I also like having the double pedal for trash can endings, to get that popcorn popping sound...lol...😆🤟

  • @aalegge
    @aalegge 5 ปีที่แล้ว +78

    Here's the 3 things I would say:
    1. Context.
    2. Don't use your double pedal as a crutch. Try to push the limit on what you can do with your single pedal.
    3. Sometimes, it could be interesting to use a double pedal in situations where you usually might not, as long as you use it tastefully. 👍

    It's completely situational in my opinion. It's just another tool in your gig bag. Sometimes at gigs, if I'm playing blues or jazz, I'll almost never touch my slave pedal, but that's not to say it's not there and ready if I "need" it. Same holds true about the brushes in my stick bag. I don't always need them, but they're always there and ready if i do. Additionally, there have been times I've had issues with my main pedal, and had to resort to playing with the slave pedal the rest of the gig. As always Gabe, awesome video bro!! 👍👌👊🤘

    I feel that that at the end of the day it’s about the tools and how you’re being inspired. If I have two snares set up, different ideas would pop up in my head. Same thing with pedals. Going further it’s also genre based but we’re in art and different paths and ideas are allowed. So letting the gear and ear (new hashtag) work together might just be the conclusion. Great vid!!

      Paul, Me Too....at 69 yo, I cannot play heel up the way he does, especially on double pedals. Due to my physicality, even when I first started playing in 1967, I always played Heel Down. After a 50 Year Hiatus from 1969, I took up the drums again as retirement pleasure (retired in April 2021 due to those Physical disabilities of spinal issues all stemming from a shorter right leg ( 1") which was result of a right Femur fracture in 1966 [HS Football]. I got a Double pedal (Mapex 500TW), using it at times (I don't play Metal at all), to produce double strokes more easily, but I do have difficulty of switching my left foot from a Hi Hat pedal to the second Bass drum pedal. At the EOTD , it's really unnecessary for the music I play to ( CCR, Stones, Beatles, Clapton, Winwood, Mellencamp, Petty, Springsteen, etc.). FYI, I also tried a Duallist pedal copy cat .....a Cannon Percussion DB pedal where there is a Toe and Heel played on 1 pedal ----- it's tricky, but if you can master, keeps your left foot free to play the Hi Hat as desired. Be well, Happy Drumming

    @Drummerjon 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I'm on team both. I have a double pedal but only really use the left one for accents and the end of a song. Personally I think that it doesn't really matter which one you have, it just depends on how you use it. Keep up the awesome work man!! Also i want to see more tour vlogs!!

  • @thedrummingcode8593
    @thedrummingcode8593 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I always use a double pedal but don't use it very often with the 2 pedals; I concentrate more on my skill with the right foot. However, being able to do both is a big advantage in many music styles! And regularly practicing with the double pedal prevents the typical 'weaker left foot'.
    On top of that, I attached a tambourine on the left pedal; so when I want to use the tambourine, I just move the beater attached to the left pedal from the bass directly to the left pedal, so then the left pedal is used independently from the right bass pedal. The advantage here is that I keep my hands free to go around the drum kit, for example 8th notes on the closed hihat with quarter notes on the tambourine with the left foot, and still keeping my hands free. Should probably make a video to make that clear...
    Another useful peace of gear for double bass is a hihat drop clutch, so that you still can use the closed hihat while double bassing; one hit on the clutch drops the top cymbal on the bottom cymbal; one hit with the left foot on the hihat pedal brings it up again in the desired position. You can even do that in the middle of a song.
    To wrap this all up: With regards to the gear: absolutely double. With regards to grooving: absolutely necessary to develop a skilled right foot.

BUT, if you are talking about 16th note bass drum playing at about 170 bpm or above/fast three stroke on the bass drum, you must be lying that you can play it with single pedal.

      @Mette B cause its art to keep this method of bass-drumming in this time nowadays where every 2nd drummer uses double pedal where actually no double pedal is needed and I really like the feel of single pedals but not of the doubles. Another reason is of course the style of music I'm drumming to... classic rock and Pop-rock to Funk to Hardrock. Sometimes I really hate it how the notes getting too much over one another and it just sounds like jerking around. Thats why:)

    Dude I love watching you properly rocking out behind the kit. 😍💪🤘I do think context of the music is key. I have largely just played single pedals, but do like to challenge myself sometimes with double kicks. When I was at the UK Drum Show the other day, I really enjoyed having a go on the double kicks and found myself wanting to play heavier and smash the skins harder. Whereas it was more the grooves that were key when playing single kick. There is something exciting about hearing double kicks in a drum solo! 🔥🔥🤘🤘You should record two full on decent length drum solos to showcase both pedal types. Bet you love going absolutely nuts on the skins! 😉

    I prefer double pedal for the added options when playing, and i like making both my legs do the same work :-) . But double pedal means it’s harder to fit a hi hat stand close to you., I basically have to compromise the position of the hi hat pedal and the double pedal slave pedal.

  • @JoMoGoMusic
    @JoMoGoMusic 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    While the double bass pedal definitely has its benefits such as speed and the ability to create nasty licks, the major drawbacks I see are 1) to fully utilize the double bass pedal's abilities, you have to forfeit at least some or all of your foot control over the hi-hat, 2) being that it is basically two pedals, you generally have to pay twice as much for the double, and 3) floor real estate is hard to come by in the hi-hat base and snare stand area, so you may have to deal with a less-than-desirable configuration to even be able to use the double bass pedal.
    but hey, that's just me.

    As long as you know how to use your hi hats in a groove setting, opening and closing them, double bass can be a great tool. There are guys out there that are a perfect example of this. John Blackwell, Chad Szeliga, Steve Smith, Carter Beaufort etc. Just learn how to use the hi hat first, then go from there. If not you can still do a ton with one kick, like Thomas Pridgen, Jojo Mayer, Aaron Spears and Josh Eppard. Really, there is beauty in both ways of playing.

    I used to be only single pedal. Now I would say double will always be better just because you can play a double pedal using just your single foot,but also still have the option to use both feet. I am not crazy fast with a double pedal, but there are things I can do with it ,that I can’t do without it .if I think something sounds better with one foot then I simply don’t use the other one . Or use left foot to do something else like HH for that part. I was very surprised when starting using a double bass pedal how many things you can do better than a single pedal , even ON SLOWER things and groves. It just gives you more capabilities. You have your main foot either way. By having an extra limb available to add things you just have more options. It’s like you carrying 4 heavy bags ,and someone grabs one bag from you that is the heaviest. All of the sudden it is easier to do carry because they took some of the weight off

    I like having a double pedal to practice on! However, since the bands I play with are not doing any "real" metal tunes that require double kick as part of the beat, it's easier to travel with a single. Bonham didn't use a double pedal! And some would say that if you're a "real" metal drummer, you should have TWO bass drums! (each with a single pedal!) Master the Rosetta Stone with a single pedal, then get another kick for your left foot!!! : )

    I feel like you should try both to bulid foot speed, foot muscle (if that makes sense), and foot memory. Like learner rudiments with you hands, which gives it muscle memory.

    I maxed out out my skill on my single pedal like being able to do quadrouples and its the dead end. So, i'm with team double pedal as there's more room to grow.

    Personally I don't like two bass drum so I like one bass with double bass pedal and use the second for enchaments, dymnatics, extra fills and effects have a single pedal for a kick share for extra dymnatics and fills leaving my left hand to do more tom work

    Thought the timing was a lot better on the single pedal. The double pedal of course can do the quick ruffs type stuff though which is cool. ( opinion from a non-drummer)

    This is a strange comparison, it’s about what you can afford. A double kick pedal works as a single and a double. I think this is an example of why drummers get labelled a little simple.

    Well, I like both but of course it depends on what genra you want to play, if you want metal, double pedal, if you want rock, single pedal, jazz single pedal, punk rock, for me both, indie single or double. Hard rock double pedal. I like both but i am used to have a single pedal. Nice video tho!

    I'd go with double. Mainly because you could always use it as a single pedal too. For creativity, just use only one pedal and limit yourself. We saw this in the video cause Gabe didn't change the pedal over so why not just buy once and that's it? Whatever helps the song -> plus it opens you up to play different genres with ease and adds some extra spice.

    The only thing is, everything you can do on a single pedal, you can do on a double. Not everything you can do on a double you can do on a single. Its like with the hands, you use two sticks not one. If you find yourself needing to practice on your weaker hand, you just work on that hand with set exercises, so the same can be with the feet. You can still work each foot at any time with a double, but not both with a single. Also I'd argue it allows you to be more creative than single, provided you dont deliberately stifle your creativity with it lmao. Just find cool sounds and rhythms that work. Plenty of ways you can spice up with a double kick. To me its a pretty simple case of "why go without it?"

    I dont know how this is a debate. Obviously double right? You can choose to use one foot for particualr songs and what fits with the groove and music. Does that mean you should play one pedal songs with two? No. That blast beat you played is where the argument should be for the diffefent sound.

    I practiced to be able swapping left and right side to the dominant one. So I play in a right hand setup put can swap over. Left foot bdrum and right hand snare. For practicing that double pedal is vital with only 1 bdrum. So i dont have to change setup or my own position when I swap

    There is no better or worse. It’s all preference and depends what style of music and drumming. People say this person or that person or I can play everyone on a single that is played double. That is simply impossible. Maybe quick doubles and even triples but not the fast double bass patterns found in hardcore/metal/prog/djent music and other styles like that. I think it’s good to start off with a single and get your right foot super fast with doubles and singles but nothing wrong with playing double bass when you need it or the band needs it.

    double bass or triple bass pedal is the best but i will prefer a triple pedal because there are different modes such as going to play double pedal in one foot playing all 3 beaters but for this video double bass is number 1

    Had a co-worker say that single bass can be faster than double bass.
    I tried explaining what i was talking about several ways because i assumed we had a translation issue or something.
    Just turns out co-workers drum teacher teaches people that double bass is a crutch 😅
    Finally i said lets have a race shall we?
    I get to use both of my legs, but u gotta hop on one foot and still beat me mkay?
    Just because you can use something as a crutch doesn't mean it HAS to be a crutch.
    Like yalls been sayin.... Context
    Great deathmetal drummers can doublebass petal harder than many people can on single
    ( to be fair Gene Hogelan has Hulk legs )

    what i see as cheating is if your getting mechanical assistance such as a double beater single pedal (not a heel toe pedal) plus its not really cheating its just building your chops incorrectly i suggest using pedals like the double beater single pedal after you have built the chops necessary to play a normal pedal

  • @Wollestar
    @Wollestar 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I had a double pedal almost right from the beginning. Didn´t stop me from learning beats on the single pedal as well. But since my focus is on Metal music, the double is necessary. And just looking at guys like Marco Minnemann and Thomas Lang playing double pedals and still be able to say, that double pedal would be less creative... I kind of disagree. But at the end, the drums are there to serve the music. If the music requires only a single pedal, play it and vice versa.

    The only advantage I give the single is being able to add in closed HH notes inside of fills. People add a remote hat or a permanently closed set of auxillary hats to make this possible with a double pedal. That's the only benefit I'm giving the single. Using a double is definitely not cheating. Almost all of the pros you see use a double or have 2 basses. Using a double pedal allows us poor drummers to play wicked beats without buying a massive kit with 2 bass drums or buying a separate orphan kick that probably won't match the rest of your kit.

    Single pedals with two bass drums is the head combination for hardcore metal players. But eh.
    I grew up playing single pedals and I enjoy it..
    Double bass pedals are fun, but I like the single since it allows me to keep everything close and tight together.

    I find myself on the side of double pedal or nothing. When you think about it, it doesn’t make a lot of sense to have two sticks capable of playing notes on a single drum in quick succession and not have that same accessibility on a bass drum. Double bass I argue is equally as important as your drum sticks. However, that’s just my opinion and opinion is subjective.

    Personally, I’m on team single pedal, but that’s just MY preference. I see guys like Devon Taylor, Aaron Spears, Larnell Lewis, Chris Coleman, etc. who all use single pedal and are straight gods. Then there are guys like Benny Greb, who’s considered to be one of the groove giants of the drumming world, who uses double pedal. For me, it’s a nice challenge working out my right foot and playing crazy patterns with it. I also love having the freedom to do other things with my left foot. But then you can be like Benny Greb and use both your double bass pedal and hi hat at the same time😂😂It’s literally all personal preference and we shouldn’t be down each other’s throats about it.
